Hello all!

I'm a schoolteacher, and after a summer working in my garden,a part time job, etc., I'll be heading back to the classroom in a few weeks.

It seems that every year I catch a nasty cold in the first few weeks of school (not surprising). However, I just signed up with some girlfriends for a "womens kayaking weekend" the weekend of Sept. 15th. I would REALLY like to not be sick for this!

So, I was wondering if anyone had any tips, ideas, etc. that they have found useful for giving the 'ole immune system a boost to fight off all those icky viruse and bacteria.

Thanks so much!
Jennifer

Thanks so much for all of your advice!! I've been taking the extra vitamen C and echinacea, and bought a bottle of the Airborne that I use when I feel a tickle in my throat or anything. So far, so good, and I was healthy for my kayaking trip (which was SO FUN!!). I'm going to contine with the above (and of course, keep washing my hands like crazy), and see if I can avoid the stomach bug the kids around here seem to be passing around to each other! Yep, that is the color they seem to turn when it hits them!

Thanks again!!

I have several products through Isagenix (Health and Wellness system) I could share with individual if you want to hear more.

Isagenix is packed with antioxidants to promote a health body and they also have a cleanse to remove harmful chemical and toxins we consume.

The IsaMune contains the finest source of bovine colostrum available to support the immune system. It tastes great and is safe for children to use.

If interested visit: www.jackiemarchitell.isagenix.com to order a bottle.

Here is to your health.

Vit C is good for the people that cant take other things.
Yes it does go out in the urine, but some people ,when taking very high doses can make crystals in thier urine, which isnt good either. I think using things moderately and dont over do is the best thing to do.

Our doctor always recommends the old stand by, vitamin C. You can take 1000 milligrams daily, and up to 3000 milligrams daily when you are ill-or to prevent illness. Vitamin C doesn't build up in your body, it's flushed out in your urine, so it's perfectly safe. I have kept many a sore throat at bay by doing this. My son travels with his band and shakes thousands of hands every weekend. The first year he was out he was ill all winter. Now he relys on this remedy and has been well the last two winters! Hope it will work for you!

You are right, you have to be carefull. I have auto-immune illnesses myself and the immune system stimulating herbs like echinachae or astragulus can really reek havoc on my whole system....It is wise to be VERY careful if you don't have a normal immune system because of diabetes, aids, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc...also if you have been on steroids like prednisone for longer than 2 weeks.
A healthy diet with yummy fruits and vegetables never hurt anyone!

Trader Joe's sells Airborne at a lower price than other places. I love the Trader!
Shirley Posted - Aug 22 2006 : 7:31:51 PM
I use airborne now and it does seem to work.
I used to take a ton of Ascobric Acid when I started to get a cold , but the airborne works better than just the plan vit C.
Theres another similar to Airborne also but cant rmeember the name. and it works too
BStein Posted - Aug 22 2006 : 2:03:23 PM
The Airborn is really expensive (like $10) and, according to a pharmacist friend, it's the Vitamin C in the Airborn that does the trick. Airborn has 1000 mg of Vitamin C in each tablet. You take it up to every three hours when you are going on a plane, or another place where there are lots of germs, or when you feel a cold coming on. So buy a bottle of Vitamin C and do the math (and save a few bucks).

Clare is so right w/ diet & immune boosters but you do need to be careful w/ some of this stuff. RESEARCH is very important before taking herbs, immune boosters or other pills you havent taken before. Alot of things will mess w/ your meducation. I am no Dr. but have a husband w/ an auto-immune problem that has landed him in the hospital and we almost lost him more then once. One of the reasons we almost lost him was due to medication while in the hospital. Just be careful w/ ant kind of pills. If we can make it better w/ natural healthy foods, it's always our first option.

Hi Jennifer!

I find that "odor free" garlic (Vitamin Shoppe is good) is helpful, as is oregano oil, turmeric and ginger. I also take CoQ 10, and TMG, or trimethylglycine. My white count had been steadily declining, reached 2.7 when I began this regimen. It's up to about 4, now. I get less sinus headaches, also. The garlic is anti-fungal as well as cholesterol lowering.... just for starters. Of course, using fresh herbs in cooking is very good for our health, too.

Blessings,
Ann

Yes, I second the advice about taking 'Airborne' -- herbal effervescent tablet. We take it at the first sign of a cold (that little tickle in the nose or squint of the eye) and the cold is knocked out immediately. Or, take it after you get a cold -- will lessen the severity. My husband used to get stress-sick colds, when worn out from too much work, and he swears by this stuff.

Beth,

Do you mean "Airborne"? I always have some at my desk and take it before I fly. It really does seem to help.

I have to roundly agree that nutrition is first and foremost the number one immune booster.

One other thing in addition to the immune boosters listed above is one I found through Watkins - called larch Arabinogalactin - here is some info on it from PDRHealth. http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/nutsupdrugs/lar_0320.shtml
It is available as an ingredient in a Watkins product called Rezist plus. I've been taking it for a while and haven't had the flu since I started... Not very scientific but it works for me.

2 things I swear by for the cold and flu season are Moducare(made from plant sterols and sterinols) is a natural immune booster- had a sinus infection and it really did the trick. The other is a tablet made by a teacher, though I can't think of the name, anyway you drop it in water like an alka seltzer and when it dissolves you drink it. I found this at wal-mart.

I agree, thanks Clare! I wish I could have had this post in front of me last week when I was suffering from my sinus infection at my in-laws, without my daily multi-vitamin (forgot them) and not eating my usual fresh foods! Good reminders. I will save this one for the cold and flu season!

Yes. I have done a lot of personal research as well as consulting MDs and naturpaths on this issue as I am now a cancer survivor and really do not want a second bout of it.

First, cut out sugar and refined foods. Diet is key to a working immune system. Sugar inhibits your immune system for 6hours after eating it. Your digestive tract lies right along many areas of the immune system. Your instestines secrete and receive through their lining. You need to improve your digestion by eating what you should and not eating the stuff we all know we should avoid. So, here is a simple list of what to avoid: sugar, white flour, pasta and rice, hydrogenated oils, processed foods. Eat: Lots of fresh as in vegetables and fruit, lots of greens like swiss chard, spinach, broccoli, whole grains and beans, sprouts, quality lean meats, dairy and fish.

Next, you can take supplements and things to boost the immune system. Everyone should take a good multimineral and multivitamin supplement daily; a calcium ,magnesium and vit D supplement and essential fatty acids. I also take a form of probiotics and digestive enzymes with any meal that has cooked food in it. These help support digestion for overall absorption and to help the work of your organs.

Then, if you think you really need it, you can take Echinacea Purpura and/or Echinacea Angustifolia for immune support in tincture form (liquid) as well as colostrum. There are also mushrooms that boost immunity including sh**ake and cordyups. I take an immune formula in capsule with colostrum and these mushrooms as well as garlic. You can take garlic by eating it raw or in capsules. It is very good for your body overall and especially the blood and immune system.

Hope this helps. Of course, you have the simple and effective forms of spreading by hand washing and covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze.

I have found eliminating sugar and white flour key to improved health and vitality, supplements to help me feel secure with my choices and yoga and walks to improve my mood and flexibility and release any tension or stress.

Hope this info helps make your transition back to school an easy one. Enjoy the kayaking. I just did a trip o nthe Delaware with our confirmation students, the minister and two other moms. It was GREAT!!!! Perfect weather and now I am itching to get the canoe out and hit the local lakes for evening enjoyment.
