My situation is that I have a lot of pain and limited mobility in my right knee. My doctor put me in a thigh to ankle knee brace and I'm getting around with a cane, but until I see the orthopedic next Tuesday, She didn't want to give me any thing for pain. All of the over the counter pain medicines make me ill and make my stomach burn even if I take them with food. She thinks that I will need surgery, so I'm a bit worried about that, but I can deal with the limited mobility issue, but the pain is terrible and I'm wondering if anyone has any pain remedies that they could share.

Thank you all so much!

Hugs from your gimpy farmgirl sister in Moscow!

Just thought Id agree with the heat/ice treatment...Ive seen this work. I am not positve how but its something to do with the caretaker demonstrating to the patient that there is a method of healing for inflammation which involves the area to receive both extremes and then to find its own equilibrium.
Its kind of hard to describe and its difficult when youre the one hurting to administer this to yourself...because youre suffering.
Do you have anyone who could come and give you this treatment? It really does work.
Also, on the painkiller note, my thoughts are that poppy seeds may offer some support to the body giving a relief to pain.
This comes from the logic that since poppys are in the family of the other painkillers, they might have some pain numbing qualities too.
I eat them on bagels, whenever I can find them.
Hope you get the care you deserve!

I have been there with the knee pain and ended up having a left knee total knee replacement 2 years ago. It has really really been great..except that first two months of recovery...and my other knee is not doing great but will have to wait. I know what you mean about the pain. Heat always made my knee feel alot better but the doc always told me to NOT use heat and to use ice instead. So I did. But the heat DID feel better at the time. I hope some of the things the other gals suggested will help you. You are in my prayers for sure!

Hi, I get temporary relief from some of my hip and myriad back pain issues from a topical gel called Blu Emu. Walmart has it for about $7.00. It's the only topical stuff I can use. Most of the others have ingredients that burn and blister my skin. Hope you get some relief soon! You are in my thoughts and prayers, for sure! Hugs, Lu

Noni is excellent for helping with inflammation and pain. Topical capsicum may also help.

Annika- Allow me to put my surgical nurse hat on here for a few moments. I am not sure what is wrong with your knee but it very well may respond to some sort of surgery. The pain is most likely a result of inflammation and possible some sort of joint/ligament involvement. Depending on what is actually wrong, surgery may provide you with better or restored mobility as well as a lot less pain. You can sort of imagine your knee as a car which has developed worn out parts or broken parts and now just isn't working well at all. If you need the car to get to get you to the store or doctor or vet etc..then you have to get it fixed properly and surgery is like taking it to a car mechanic. As far as pain management, if you cannot tolerate drugs like tylenol or ibuprofen(advil) or Aleve(naproxyn) then you will need a prescription from the MD for another option. Keep in mind that narcotics cannot do anything but mask the pain for a few hours and then you have to take them again. They also tend to make people very sleepy all the time and often nauseated. It is very hard to function on narcotics and hence they are ususally reserved for serious needs like surgery or cancer or trauma. The one thing you might try is using ice or heat or both on your knee when it is elevated while you sit. See which one helps you. IT is only temporary but it may give some relief and it won't upset your stomach. I hope the orthopedic has some good options for you. Perhaps Physical Therapy is all that is needed for a few months along with some medication to reduce the inflammation. But if surgery is your best option, I encourage you to not shy away because when joints get messed us, they just have to be fixed or your quality of life goes way down due to constant pain and immobility. As a surgical nurse I loved orthopedic procedures the best because we could fix and replace the messed up bones and joints and patients really felt so much better after they fully recovered. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you so much Angela, now I know what to look for!! I'm so sorry that you have to live with the back and neck problems, but 50% is not good odds, is it? I certainly wouldn't chance it either.
Do you have range of motion exercises to help you keep as limber as possible? They really can make a difference

Hugs!

There are some natural health stores in my area that make their own pain sprays for muscle pain. I also get white willow bark pills for nerve and joint pain.

I have a problem with my back and neck that drs haven't been able to solve and can't offer more than a 50% chance of improvement with surgery. I prefer to just use natural treatments since they make life livable and usually completely kill the pain.

Check with the smaller, privately owned health stores. They usually have the best stuff!
