Posted - Sep 13 2011 : 4:43:54 PM Hi girls -
As soon as we start homeschool, every stinkin' year we come down with really bad colds: fever, sore throat, runny nose, sneezing, aches, exhaustion... Why is this, I wonder? (My son likes to say it's because we're allergic to school - very funny.) So frustrating! I know it won't last forever, but I hate feeling so down for the count, and seeing my son so wiped out. No fun at all. Wah.
I've been sticking to the basics: chicken soup, chicken broth, orange juice, plenty of water, salt and water gargles and herbal teas for sore throats, and a special cold care tea... vaporizor will be set up tonight, too. The bedding has all been washed, pillows are covered with an extra towel for good measure... Vigilantly washing every surface with either vinegar and water or rubbing alcohol to kill germs...
Any other suggestions? I just want to get this over with!!! Argh!!! And my husband is supposed to start working out of state for the next few weeks - I really don't want him to catch this, too. So if there's anything you think that will help (aside from my neurotic sanitizing of everything), I'd really appreciate your suggestions!
I think if I ask, my dear hubby will run out and buy me some ice cream to soothe the throat and the soul... I look pathetic enough, I'm sure he'll have mercy! ;) LOL!
Thanks girls! Be healthy!
Hugs -

Posted - Sep 19 2011 : 11:00:55 AM Oh Nini, Sorry to hear about that. Don't ya hate a nasty ol' cold? In addition to the great tips above, I would like to add one more I got from somewhere here a long time ago. Drink a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water. I like to do this, too, when I feel that "tickle" in my throat that a cold is coming on. It really works.

Posted - Sep 17 2011 : 9:25:02 PM Ugh I wish I'd have read this post about 4 days ago when I first started coming down with this awful cold. Has felt more like a respiratory flu as I'm sure for a day or two I ran a fever. Cough, sinus pain, runny nose, sore throat/laryngitis but think today I feel a smidgeon better. Seems to be a rash of this going around town right now. Hope everyone who is suffering with colds/flu feels better soon :)

Posted - Sep 15 2011 : 10:29:25 AM My husband uses elderberry syrup called Sambucol and I use Herbal Resistance Liquid (I think by Source Naturals) at the VERY FIRST sign of cold or flu symptoms. I usually feel better very soon but continue to take it for about 10 days. If those around me are sick I will take the Herbal stuff for a week to 10 days as a preventative and immune builder. I hardy ever get sick, maybe 1 cold every 3 to 4 years. I order most of my stuff from Vitacost, been using them for years and happy with the service.
Hope everyone feels better soon.

Posted - Sep 15 2011 : 07:06:53 AM I have found that avoiding the 'school rush' works best for us. We take the months of august and september off, since the stores are filled with overstressed families trying to get ready for school starting. The kids are all shoved into a building full of stale air and dust so that one kid that's sick brings them all sniffling to their knees! Then those sick kids get the parents sick and they all have to go to the store for school supplies and cold medicine. I don't want to be around it, so we stay home and take it easy those first 2 months, then kick off our schooling.
Have you ever noticed the beginning of school list always has kleenex on it? Then they ask for more around thanksgiving? The schools know that colds and flus are gonna be bad at first, then repeat at the beginning winter!

Posted - Sep 14 2011 : 2:26:36 PM I clean with a mixture of 1/2 cup white vinegar and 1 gallon of water, after I mix it i slowly add 1/2 bleach and stir. I sit this on the kitchen counter and I use it all day long. Counters, door nobs, phones, bathrooms anythiing and everything gets cleaned with this. At the end of the day you dump it out and rinse the bucket. You can not carry this over or put it in a spray bottle. It will neautilize itself in 24 hours. I have done this for eons!! And when the big H1N1 scare took place the CDC gave this recipe on their website. My hubs had to laugh and said. "you been doing this forever".

Posted - Sep 14 2011 : 10:24:28 AM For me, zinc lozenges right when I get the very first feeling I might be getting a cold are what works. They don't seem to help much if I already have a cold. |

Posted - Sep 14 2011 : 07:43:20 AM I just saw that link for a recipe that Annika gave you. Mine has cinnamon, ginger and cloves too. So easy to make. And cheaper than buying it in a health food store.

Posted - Sep 14 2011 : 07:40:33 AM ELDERBERRY SYRUP!!!! I cannot say it enough how GOOD this stuff is. If more people did this there were be no more colds or flu or whatever. You can either buy some or make it yourself.
And have you tried to change the day school starts? Like maybe just start without any warning. Don't say a word, just do school. You could just sneak up on school and stay well.
So if you need the directions for making the elderberry syrup, I would be happy to share it. I have already started taking mine.

Here is a good and easy recipe, and there are others on line as well and places to order it. But if you have a a large, natural foods type market, they should have it in the herbal medicines section
Hugs and get well prayers for you and your family!

Posted - Sep 13 2011 : 6:18:43 PM Oh! I'm so glad you said that, Annika! I remember buying a brand new bag last winter and we never touched it! I never even thought of it until you mentioned it! YES!!! Thank you! What a great reminder! Where do you find elder syrup? I think I might have zinc in the cupboard, too. Thank you! You're the best!
(BTW - I am loved... He went out and got me some ice cream!)
