Ok...so who here has had braces or has a kid who has/had braces? My son just (a few days ago) got four braces on the top of his mouth and a lower level holding arch (spacer?) on the bottom. He is almost constantly complaining about the pain, and its hard for him to eat. (And he's a growing boy, so he LOVES to eat!) Now, neither my husband or I had braces so this is new to us. I'm hoping some farmgals here can offer up their experience about what helped them feel better and what foods were best to eat when they first had them. A friend told me the first two weeks are the hardest and then you hardly realize you have them. The orthodontist just said "Hey, if his mouth is sore, just give him some motrin." I don't want to be giving him motrin constantly. Advice? Your experienceS?

I've had braces twice also. I had the wire braces as a junior high kid in the 80s, and just a couple of years ago I had round two with Invisalign trays. I agree with what everyone else is saying. There's no getting around the fact that they just hurt for a few days after each adjustment, with either system. That's when your teeth are getting new pressure added to them to make them move. I never had to limit myself to soft foods, but everybody's tolerance for pain is different.

Thanks Kathy! I guess I was just a little caught off guard because what the ortho said was "They might be a little sore the first week" and she didn't say anything about eating soft food. I don't know if she assumed I'd had braces and knew what the drill was or what. I'm glad you all are confirming what my son is complaining about. :)

I've had braces twice, as a preteen and an adult, my husband wore them and my daughter, fact is when they are new or have just been adjusted they hurt. Motrin works well for the pain and as Karen said soft foods so it's wise to keep applesauce and those kinds of foods handy. Do everything the Orthodontist tells you he's the one that went to dental school and has the experience.

Hi Amy,

I had braces twice--once as a teenager and then again last year.

When the braces are new-or newly tightened-there's no getting around being stuck eating soft foods.
Mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, oatmeal, creamed corn, scrambled eggs/omlettes...

Motrin is a good pain reliever and I can see taking it for a few days out after every tightening--although everyone is different.
If, after a week, the pain hasn't dissipated enough to eat toast, I would call the doctor. Pain should begin to dissipate after a few days.

Does he have a waterpick? I strongly suggest getting one for him.
It is extremely difficult and time consuming to floss with braces and a waterpick helps a lot--though flossing should still be a priority.

My best advice is just to follow ALL the rules. If the doctor instructs him to wear rubber bands--press him to wear them. The process will only take longer if he doesn't.

Braces are a hassle but are well worth it in the end.
I hope this is of some help,

Karen

PS Oh yes and, when finished--WEAR the retainer.
