I know we need a new mattress. Ours is really old and was probably well past its prime when it was passed along to us. So I know mattress shopping needs to happen. But until we can afford one, does anyone have any tips for how to make do? I wake up with lower back pain every single morning and its getting old! I sleep on my side or my stomach and always use two pillows. Do you think if I use one pillow or no pillows it would help? Is there something I can put on top of our mattress that would buy us some time, but save money? Thanks gals!

We bought a memory foam mattress 7 years ago and it solved both our back problems, it is still just as comfortable as the day we first used it. This summer we have had to sleep in the motor-home which has an awful mattress which was killing our backs. A couple of weeks ago I gave up and bought a memory-foam topper and it's wonderful! Should have done back in May when we started sleeping in the rv. Nick has a very bad back, having had spinal surgery in two sections of his spine. I have spinal arthritis, which says it all. With the memory foam...... no back aches for either of us.

What ever you choose to do, I wish you many nights of comfortable sleep and pain-free mornings.

I'm so sorry. Back pain is crippling. We had a really hard mattress that was causing me agony (back injury). We put one of those memory foam pads on it and that made it "better" but what really saved me was the Sleep Number bed. Love that thing. I get to have my soft bed and my husband gets to have his firm bed! I've also heard wonderful things about tempurpedic beds.

Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories

Thanks everyone for the information. I've started stretching before bed (and when I wake up). I really thought I was active enough during the day but I guess I'm not using the right muscles! I also started sleeping with one pillow instead of two and I can't believe the difference that has made. Hard to get used to, but its helping!

To Martha: ??!! Yoga was tough for you? You didn't have the right teacher for sure. I am taking teaching training and of course am a big believer! I know that yoga is good for the back of done right. I must admit, I have never heard anyone say only Marines could do it! Must have had a gung ho male teacher? Or maybe it was Astanga? Which I do not recommend for beginners with ailments especially.

Anyway, I do skype yoga with friends and would love to blog or email you about yoga (or anyone who is interested).

There are very simple, slow flow routines (like 15 mins or less) that can ease you into yoga and a better feeling back and body. If you are interested post here and I will give the info!! :)

I was told to raise the head of my bed and to turn my mattress, puttin the foot at the head. I was very sceptical, but did it, and it worked.

Raisin the head of the bed by about 4 inches relieves the pressure on the back by shiftin the wieght more towards the hips and easin the downward pull on the spine. It feels really great and helps with my Hubby's snorin. BONUS!!!

Oh my gosh, I tried yoga once and quit, I would think only Marines COULD do Yoga...gosh its tough
on the other topic...honestly I like to have options...I like to sleep on couches...but the best alternative to the mattress...besides the recliner...is the plywood or table itself covered in two sheets of foam...I also need to have at least a 6-8 inch bump supporting my head. a stack of foam rectangles works pretty good. yeah, i could be a cowgirl

Stretching is another great thing for back pain! When I used to work in sports medicine my patients that started doing yoga had the best recovery. Not that many Marines will admit that they would do it though! lol! But stretching before you go to bed, with long holds (at least 30 seconds) on the stretches seems to help a lot of people. If you can in the morning too.

Is the Sleep Number really as good as it seems? I've looked at them a few times, but getting up that much for a bed is just alot to chew on for me right now. Although, I do realize the benefit of getting truly good sleep would certainly be worth while.

I had back problems for years. Until one day I heard a doctor say that walking is the best thing for one's back; he said it lubricates the spine. That was an AH HA moment for me. I've been walking ever since. Some days I only get to walk 20 minutes, but it helps. And- as the other farmgirls suggested, yes to the board under the mattress. It has helped me.
Hope you can get relief soon.

We did this for my dh's back. His chiropractor actually suggested it. Hubby has some major back problems. We saved up for a Sleep Number bed which has really made all the difference.

We put a memory foam (actually 2) topper on ours along with a down alternative pillow topper. They helped for a while but we really just need to get a new mattress as well. Cruddy beds are no fun :(. However, I recently went to see a chiropractor and had my back and neck adjusted and that has helped tons with the back pain--even with the poor mattress we have.

We bought one of those temprapedic (sp?) mattress covers out of the memory foam. It really helped for a long time. but I think our mattress is done for.... blessedly.... We are being gifted a pillow top mattress today and I sure hope it helps. I wake up and can't hardly move in the mornings!

Do what you love, love what you do.
