I am experiencing a gradual lameness in my left foot. I saw the neurologist last September when I realized I couldn't lift the toes on that foot. An MRI on my lower spine didn't show any nerve impingement, so he thought it was due to crossing my legs and pressing on the nerve. In the early spring the problem increased, and included not being able to go up onto my toes on the foot, and now it's become very weak, and turns purple after standing or sitting-- when I have the leg raised it quickly returns to normal. This past Friday, MRIs were done on the hip, the femur and the knee. My doc called to say the report shows nothing... and we'd been hoping for a Baker's cyst or benign tumor that could be easily removed. Actually, Doc expected it to be the case. On Monday my DH and I will take him the films for him to examine. I know there are some bad, i.e. hard to diagnose/treat potential problems and would greatly appreciate prayer. My life is slowing to a near halt as the lameness increases.
Thanks very much, farmgirls!

Today we went to Johns Hopkins for a neurology appointment and nerve conduction study. The area in my leg which doesn't have neuro-motor (not sure that's the correct term) connection is to be MRI'd again, by a newer type of technology, up in the Philadelpia area, this time for the nerve only, hopefully to show an impingement that can be surgically removed. No date yet for the MRI, but I must say I'm delighted for an impingement to be back in the picture, so to speak. I know some of you dear farm girl friends are prayer warriors... and I am most grateful.

Talitha, I think my toes turning under IS a result of lack of proper stretching! I'm going to be doing more vigorous stretching of the calf and see if I can't improve that... so I don't need to be barefoot in the winter in order to walk!

Always eager to be dreaming, we talked about cows and pasture feeding them all the way home today. Actually I did all the talking... and quite happily.

The doppler flow test showed I don't have any vascular problems in either leg. Good news, no angiogram! Bad news, we have to keep looking. Lyme and Rheumatoid arthritis are being ordered for blood tests on Monday... but around here folks with Lyme typically don't feel like the local tests are worth much. The cardiologist told me I may use the stationary bike for exercise, which I'm very pleased to hear (don't enjoy it, but miss walking and need to use that calf). That's about all I know! Again, thank you for prayers.

Hugs to you all,
Ann

Oh Farmgirls, thank you so much. I actually have an update! My "doctor's appointment" tomorrow turns out to be the doppler flow study, the angiogram is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, and today my blood work was done.

Talitha, funny you should mention rubbing the foot... my stability is greatest when barefoot, and my wooden floors aren't clean even after swabbing the deck, so my feet get scrubbed every chance I get, and I use one of those Japanese brush things because it feels good. LOL. Stretching everything is necessary for lots of reasons, like avoiding cramps.

Karin, is your mother thinking she needs knee replacement? Both my parents had that done a long time ago, but I know there are lots more options, now.

Thanks again for prayers and wonderful support,
Ann

Just want to let you know that more prayers are being said on your behalf from me. Please take care and I'm glad to know that your husband is able to go with you so that between the two of you, you can keep asking the drs questions so they don't just let it slip by as a fluke. I will be praying for the drs, too. Blessings on to you for peace and patience and trust that all is being done as it needs to be done according to God's will.

Oh Ann, I am sorry to hear that you are still suffering. My mom is having chronic problems with her knee and she has said that it just wears her out dealing with the pain, just like you described. You are in my prayers and I hope that you will get some answers soon.

Kelly, I'm not comfortable with the slowness of the testing at all. My hope is that the vascular doctor will decide on Friday to push for an earlier testing schedule. My neurolgist is baffled, and although I got a phone call from his office this morning saying another doctor and he had discussed my films and didn't see anything abnormal, I plan to take them to the Friday appointment. Phil will go, as well. He can be a very good advocate; articulate without being threatening. I'm pretty worn out, and thinking is tough, let alone speaking coherently. My primary doctor, who has accomplished all of this in two days, happens to be a woman.

I am exercising upper legs, abdomen, and lifting weights without standing, for bone density and just to keep more or less in shape while I wait, but I honestly don't know how to do anything for that calf muscle. I think the loss of blood flow makes it hard--I can, for instance, pull up onto my toes once, bearing some weight on that foot, but then it is totally unable to share the weight. I'm told that's a sign of vascular trouble, not nerve. I do stretching exercises, however...

Thank you for praying. I know Who knows exactly what's going on! And, that is a very good thing.

Blessings to you,
Ann

Ann, Glad to hear Phil is better but wish you were too. With the testing not beginning until Sept. do you think they think it can wait that long? Is there exercise you can do until then to prevent the atrophy of the muscle? Did the neurologist not find anything? Boy, I seem so full of questions and not many answers. Know that I will continue to keep you in my prayers. Keep on top of those docs, sometimes they need to be pushed a little.
Love and peace,
Kelly

Thank you Patti and Missy! Amazingly, my doctor was able to get me in to see a vascular doctor this Friday afternoon, so I'm hoping he will have some insight and/or be able to schedule the tests sooner.

Blessings,
Ann

An update seems due. Good news is that DH is nearly completely 100% after resting his legs. I'm very grateful for that.

My own leg and foot aren't better, and my medical care has now been given by the neurologist over to my primary care doctor, who has gotten me scheduled for a doppler flow study (ultrasound on veins and artery), blood work, and an angiogram, and will be getting me into a vascular surgeon, although that will most likely not happen soon. The testing doesn't begin until Sept. 20. Big sigh, here. I have throbbing behind the knee when I'm too active or sit too long, and now my outer toes are beginning to curl under... and the muscle is shrinking.

Please pray, for this to be figured out before permanent damage is done, as well as for peace. Thanks to all of you!

Blessings,
Ann

Sounds like Phil has sympathy pains.
Good luck to both of you. I hope you get it resolved soon. I think I'd be extremely scared if I had the symptoms you described.

Dear Farm Girls,

Today we saw Dr. Sebastion with those films. Looked to me like a bunch of pictures of steaks....and Dr. S actually said so, which was pretty funny. He does question a couple of pictures that Phil had noticed and pointed out to the doc. Hopefully there will be a consultation between the radiologist and Dr. S soon, and he meanwhile wants me to go to Johns Hopkins Peripheral Nerve Clinic, so as to be seen by someone who has seen this sort of thing before, rather than going to local doctors and have repetitive testing done, which he believes would be my fate locally. Good news, he doesn't think it's a systemic problem and has checked out my brain (big smile) and spinal column.

Not good news: Phil is having nerve pain in his calves!!! He has an appointment with Dr. Sebastion on August 23, so I would ask for prayer for him, that the problem would be an entrapment which some kind of stretching can help. Years ago he had just that above one knee, and the same dr. just showed him the stretch... Does anyone else tend to have physical problems with their mate? We do this kind of stuff repeatedly, to the point when if Phil says "My --- is a problem," I can almost resign myself to my own --- acting up.

Thank you all so much for your prayers and for caring.

Blessings,
Ann

Thank you all very much. I am blessed to know your prayers and kindness. I'll let you know after I hear from my doctor. Meanwhile, my husband, Phil, is hard at work trying to do research on the internet and studying those MRIs. I've known him to be successful at this in the past when it concerned his mother. As this time my foot/leg are the problem, it cracks me up that his job has to do with (NASA) guidance, navigation, and control. He doesn't see the humor... :)
Thank you again,
Ann

Ann, first of all, I've added you to my prayer list. I hope that you receive answers soon and that your condition is easily treatable.

My father had similar symptoms 16 years ago. The doctors did test after test (several weeks' worth) and finally found the cause after more blood work. Please keep us posted and feel free to email me any time!

God bless you!
