Do any of you find anything that helps long-term for sciatica? After getting pregnant last year I got it-massage therapy helped, but now it's back-and with a 3 month old there's lots of bending over to pick her up, pick up dropped toys/pacifiers...

megan,

I have had back pain due to scoliosis and having all but six or seven vertebrae fused in my spine at 16 yo. Keep doing the exercises. . . massage is little more than a band aid (that feels like heaven). I am going to be 50 this year and I promise you that if you get your core muscles a bit stronger and pay careful attention to how you are lifting and carrying your baby you will be able to attain comfort. Also, if you are carrying any extra weight, your back will feel better once that is gone. No easy answers, everything takes so much time, I know, but it can be worth it! Good luck. marianne

I worked out yesterday, and some of the stretches really helped. I'd love to be able to go to the massage therapist every two weeks like I did before (Health insurance covered it-$20!) but my new health insurance doesn't cover it at the same rate (It would be $50), so I'll have to really budget it in. Massage was the one thing that really helped, we'll see if working out does, too!

I got sciatica after having my first, it did go away but I couldn't take it after a month so I went and saw a chiropractor and my hip was so bad it wouldn't have gone away on its own (lucky me, eh) and after about 2 weeks of doing the exercises it was gone! Then it came back while pregnant with my son, I wasn't able to get to a chiropractor so when I was cleared to start exercising again I started doing yoga again and that helped tremendously! It went away after about 12 weeks like Mara said! Now it's back with #3. . . Yoga still helps, as does heating pad (ice makes it hurt worse believe it or not) and sometimes massage will make it worse. Now that we have moved my chiropractor is like a day trip away almost but I will be going in to see him after baby #3 is born in November! If I can wait that long, haha! But so far yoga and heating pad has been keeping the pain away. Hope you get relief soon, it's not fun!

I found going to a chiroprractor and getting massages helps tremendously. If I can get into the chiropractor as soon as the pain in my hip starts I can prevent a full blown case of sciatica. Yoga stretches help prevent episodes but you have to be careful during an episode that you don't stretch to much and exacerbate the pain.

I was in physical therapy for several weeks for this a couple of years ago. Even the therapist said it pretty much takes care of itself in 12 weeks. TWELVE WEEKS!?!?! Yeah. She was right. But the exercises and massage they give you in PT can help in the meantime. You can do the exercises (mostly just stretches) yourself, but having a PT show you just how to do them is a good idea, so you get the most benefit for your effort. I hug you in sympathy. It is very painful. Hot showers help, but be very careful getting in and out of the tub! I also found that Advil helped more than even the prescription drugs my doctor gave me. If you can tolerate Advil, you can take up to 12 tablets a day (a total of 2400 mg).
