Here is what it is:
http://www.mamashealth.com/bodyparts/plantarfas.asp

I would like to treat it naturally, and other than soaking in epsons salt, I don't know what to do.

I have been prescribed medicated patches, but the list of side effects etc. is horribly long.

My husband found a solution for his plantar's faciitis when he started doing yoga with me. The stretching in the back of his legs made a tremendous difference in a couple of weeks. We often don't consider how important it is to have good comfortable shoes for the many hours we spend on our feet daily.
I was surprised no one else mentioned yoga.

mine only got better after I put the orthotics in my shoes, I move them from pair to pair as needed, cortisone shots didn't help plus there are some stretches and exercises that help

Lea - Crocs also makes shoe inserts. I ordered mine off the web. They don't work as well as actually wearing Crocs but they help when I wear my regular shoes. Maybe your husband could try those for work and then do his exercises, icing, etc. at home. Have him wear Crocs as soon as he gets home from work and takes off his boots.

My husband is having problems with the same thing. The dr gave exercises and he rolled is foot on a frozen can. He tries inserts still no luck. His job requires steel toe work boots that are very heavy. He walks alot outdoors on all types terrain and that is hard to do when you cant hardly put your weight on your foot.

Oh - so painful. I went through several years of this - orthotics, shots directly into my heel, icing, exercises, multiple doctors, even sleeping in a splint. Amazingly, by accident, I discovered something that actually made it completely go away -- Crocs ! No imitations, the real ones that cost a little more. My podiatrist said I am not his only patient that has had these results and that the imitation ones are not the same foam density. I could not believe that I had been through all that and a pair of ugly, foam shoes stopped it. Now that my feet are healed, I just wear Crocs at home -- like bedroom shoes. Good luck and I hope your feet are better soon because it really hurts.

Thank you all. The doctor told me to take 600-800mg of ibuprofen for inflammation, but my stomach says no. I've been drinking raw honey/organic apple cider vinegar with water 3 x day to help also.

I am now sporting my Brooks. The only pair I could find in my size too. I have not found Comfrey tea yet. Will Epsons salt work also? I really appreciate all of your advice and tips. Thank you.

Kristina,

I had this too and the moment I got a lift, I discovered I had one leg significantly shorter than the other and orthotics, I no longer an issue. A chiropractor is a great solution for this and no more pills or soaking.

I had it for about a year and it was so painful. I got it from wearing those flip-flops around one summer. I found that I had to wear good walking shoes for a while whether tennis shoes for regular shoes. I wores Brooks and Sketchers Shape Ups which I still wear for walking. I can't wear flip-flops or any shoes like that anymore or my feet start hurting again. I hope your feet start feeling better soon no matter what relief you use. This is so painful.

I had this a couple years ago and tried pain medication, new shoes, special inserts--nothing helped. then my dr. prescribed an anti-inflamatory medication with no side effects and it went away. Plantar facsitis is caused when the soles become inflamed, so it made sense that this would help. and it IS very painful.

Hi Kathy, I really didn't do any exercise because my foot hurt too bad just to do everyday things. My medicine did my appetite in and I have very little. It really just amounted to portion control. I ate whatever I wanted but the portions were more suited for an 8 year old. In other words, if you put on your plate what you normally eat and then take half of it back off, you should lose as I did. And 41 pounds later in about 18 months my foot is much much better.

You should get your feet adjusted by a chiropractor (if they need to be adjusted) but hyperpronation/flat foot is the cause of this most times. That is where the chiropractic adjustments come into play, the navicular bone and first metatarsal phalangeal joint are the key factors in this. Have you had shin splints before? if so it's because your foot has to high of a arch. Also, change your shoes like many have said. The use of orthotics helps with some and other's it does not work, you can order orthotics for pronation or supination it depends on what the tension on the fascia is from. Also if you can find a chiropractor that has a ultrasound machine, or one that performs myofascial stretch and release can help. I believe 95% of people with plantar fasciitis respond to conservative care.

Along with the exercises, which I did several times during the day, I bought a pair of these - http://www.heelseats.com/index.php - and they made all the difference. I had tried several other inserts but nothing worked. The heel seats do not attach to your shoes so you can easily move then from pair to pair. I wore them with everything, barn boots, danskos, corks, and tennis shoes. My danskos and my work boots, ariat and remington, were the most comfortable while I suffered with the heel pain. I have not had any pain in a few years now but still have my heel cups just in case. If you like clogs, Danskos are now made in China and I was very unhappy with my last pair, I now buy Sanitas. Sanita used to make some of the Danskos and I like them just a much as the old Dansko. Hope you have happy feet again soon!

I called around and found Brooks, women's size 11 walking shoes for $99.00. The one store that sells my size, is all out of sketcher's, due to a recent sale. Dunham's sells them, but only orders up to size 10.

Dh is driving there later today to try them on. I guess it's better than putting chemicals in my body.

Now...to find the tea...

Thank you so much. I wear size 11 so I may not be able to find them. I'll look for that tea. I'm not sure I'll be able to find it in stores, but can check in Amish nature stores tomorrow (or hubby can for me).

I would soak your foot daily in a strong comfrey tea to help with the healing process. When I had it some years ago, I would take a golf ball and roll my foot on it, it hurt to begin with but helped. Someone else told me they used a can they had frozen to roll their foot on to help "ice" it and massage the area at the same time.
Good luck. It's miserable for a while!

I know the ones my dad got were the Sketchers "Shape Ups" but there are several brands out there. My dad actually has such small feet that he bought women's shoes!!

I've never heard of Brooks brand. I look for it, along with whatever brand Alee suggests too. Thank you all. My kids think I am exaggerating about my pain. They have no compassion right now.

Hi Kristina, I suffered with this for several years. It is "extremely" painful. First I a tried cortisone (sp) shot in the heel which only work for about 6-8 weeks. I then tried custom orthotics from my foot doctor and those only made it worse for my foot and wallet. I then started to lose weight (resulting from a new medicine for something else). After losing about 25 pounds and purchasing a "very good" pair of tennis shoes from the New Balance owned store, the pain started to subside until it was completely gone. The New Balance store correctly measured my foot and found that I was wearing the wrong size for my foot. But I'm convinced that my dress shoes which were ill-fitting is what brought all of it on. In short, I now buy high quality shoes from the New Balance owned store, I wear Gel pads inside my shoes which have helped a lot and feel so good, and I'm still losing weight. That's how my issue was resolved. I hope this helps. Tina

I was on the track to losing more weight, but cannot walk on the treadmill etc. I can only do the exercise bike (I don't have one at home, just at the gym), and swim (our gym does not have a pool). what did you do for exercise while in pain?

I can call him over lunch and ask him if they are still helping. They are a bit pricy- around $100 for name brands- though there are knock offs at Walmart and Payless now. I am not sure if the knock offs work as well for the Plantar Facitis though.

I would love to know what kind of shoes they were. It's better than drugs. I don't do well with them, but I am in pain.
