Hello all,
I am a "farmgirl at heart" from Phoenix, AZ. I am working on my Yoga Teacher Training right now.

Before I started yoga I had terrible pain in my legs. Mostly joint pain. I discovered the leg strengtheners and was hooked. I have been practicing for about 6 years.
If any of you have audo immune issues, or joint pain, or anything else really, and you're interested in Yoga, I would love to start chatting about it!

I'm glad I found this post! I, too, have fibromyalgia and have been trying to control it with diet and alternative therapies, such as yoga. I need to be more consistent with it, but the morning routine you posted will give me a great place to start. Thanks for posting!

Yoga is amazing! DH had plantar fasciatis and it remedied the problem.

I did a morning yoga workout with a Gaiam video all through my cancer treatment and chemo, I think that is part of what kept me able to work through most of it.

Friends of ours wanted another child but the husband had very low sperm count due to rheumatic fever or some other disease with high fever. A couple of months after they started doing yoga they had success in conceiving. I don't know for sure the yoga helped but that seemed to be the only change in their lives.

I started a yoga class several weeks ago and am starting to see results! I can now do downward-facing dog with my heels on the mat! OK, so it's a little thing, but it's progress. I feel so much better after doing yoga. I'm afraid to try running after I hurt my knee last summer, and it's been too hot to get in a lot of walking. I'm wondering if anyone has some good yoga books--Nameste, everyone!

I love yoga! I am just checking into going for my training to become a teacher as well! Except I want to specifically go for women, where I live there just isn't enough support for women. I think it's time that changes! I am a massage therapist but I got discouraged after a really bad experience so I decided to forget that. Now I decided to have a women specific practice and I want to teach pre and post natal yoga. All I have to say is that breathing properly in labor does wonders. Lamaze, for me, made labor worse. Relaxing and listening to my breath relaxed and helped labor incredibly that I want to share that with others. Also pre natal yoga is incredible! When I don't feel up to going on a walk, I just do a 45ish minute yoga routine and I feel so energized and relaxed/centered afterward. I wish other pregnant women could have that too. I was late getting into yoga mostly because of peer pressure that yoga is religious and a lot of other false things. I'm glad I checked into it for myself. I think it's religious as you make it or not. It's really up to the individual person. Some may have other thoughts but that is my humble opinion on that :)

Nice to know other farmgirls enjoy the benefits of yoga as well!

Thanks for the advice here ladies. My DH is just starting down the road to see if he has FM. I'm sure yoga could help him also. I'm going to look up Renaulds, too.

Hello!

I have posted a morning workout on Linda's blog, and I am putting it below as well. If anyone has any questions, please let me know. You can post here, or email me at blackfellvader@yahoo.com. Thanks!!

Morning Yoga Rountine

You can do this anywhere. It does not require a mat, but you may want a chair or a block if your hamstrings are not stretchy.

Come to standing (Mountain Pose). Begin breathing slowly, inhaling fully, feeling the collar bones and heart lift. Exhale fully, pulling in the belly as you exhale. Let you exhales bring you peaces and calm and the inhales bring you energy. Take 5-10 long slow breaths centering yourself.

Inhale your arms overhead, really stretch into it. Make the legs strong.
Exhale down into Forward Bend. Keep the shoulder blades down the back, face relaxed, back straight. If you need a chair or block, please use them! #9786; Take one more breath here and let the exhale challenge you to get closer to the floor.
Inhale slowly come up. Take a full breath. Bring your feet shoulder width apart
On your next inhale bring your arms over head, lacing the fingers and turning the hands inside out. (If you cannot bring your hands together overhead, no worries! #9786; just bring them as far over head as you can)
Exhale bend to the right
Inhale center
Exhale bend to the left
Inhale center
Exhale the hands back to mountain. Inhale here, feel the legs get strong, relax the face.
Inhale the feet wide apart, feet both pointing forward. Exhale from the hips down. Keep the back straight, shoulder blades down the back, pull the belly in. Inhale part way, and exhale coming forward again. Do this slowwwly, keeping the breaths long. If you can only go a few inches, no worries! Challenge yourself in your exhales, but don’t push it! #9786;
Inhale come up slowly, take two full breaths if you need them. Exhale fully
Inhale back to Mountain Pose. Exhale fully
Inhale hand up over head one more time, really push and stretch, making the legs strong
Exhale into your last Forward Bend. Roll the shoulder blades down, relax the face, and breath….. Take one more full breath hear, allow your exhales to bring you closer to the floor….
Inhale slowly up all the way, hand back overhead. Exhale the hand together at the heart center, or Prayer pose. Take a deep cleansing breath, give thanks relax….

Namaste! #9786;

classygram, My mother has that issue with being touched. Do you have a connective tissue problem? My mom has a connective tissue disease and doesn't like message therapy either. I love it! I would still reccomend Yoga for you and am trying to find the time in my 9-10 hours days to start on the blog with some yoga therapy. :)

Gail I tried one of those massager that you put in a chair, And just a few minutes and I was jumping up so fast. With the movement up my spine was horrible. How does the massage therapy work and not hurt??? Just to touch my skin hurts sometimes. DH has learned to be very gentle with me. I've had others suggest the massage therapy, but it kind of scares me. What kind do you get???

Hi, all. After barely moving at all for years... desk job, car commute, lazy self... I finally went to physical therapy. I had to wait a week for an appointment, and started very slow, very gentle yoga meanwhile. it's helping, and wow! how much it shows about what's going on! I can see where my weaknesses are, where I need to be gentler with myself, even just how standing or sitting in certain ways twist me out of shape! Coming back to yoga after years away is like seeing an old friend!

As I was reading Brenda's message I thought that I must have written it. With fibro, back surgeries, etc. I can relate to her. I will give yoga a try as it may keep me feeling better in between my massage therapy. Massage is the only thing I have found that helps me so far. Thanks for the advice.

Hello Cibola,

When your friend looks into yoga, be sure she looks for an instructor who is patient. People who suffer from fibro usually cannot go at the same pace as most. I know that I had to start out slow. I started with Gaiam's AM & PM yoga DVD with Rodney Yee and Patricia Walden. Those are slower paced with pose modifications that work well for people just starting out.

The biggest thing I can stress though, is sticking with it. I know from experience with fribro and Renauds that the first two weeks, you/her will feel like your going to die. But stick with it, slow down if you/she need to, but keeping it up will be the biggest benefit.

Thanks and good luck to your friend!

I also noticed that you have a blog going, which I could give you yoga tips in! I love to teach people about yoga and how it can benefit them. my email is darkheavenslight@gmail.com if you want to email me. Thanks!

Hello classygram!

You are NEVER too far gone to help!! I am only 30, but I have Renauds disease, which mirrors Fibro in it's symptoms. besides exercise e, diet is huge. for three months, cut out all wheat (if you can) and you will notice your head clear. B-12 shots are great for energy.

On to the yoga part! :-) Yoga can start out very very softly, and so allows you to get used to a certain pace. I strongly reccomend gaiams AM/PM yoga with Rodney Yee to get started. It is very gentle. I would love to come and see you and work with you! I have to go, but I will post again in a bit with more suggestions.

Hello pnickols! There are several moves for strengthening the knees. Warrior A & B are good for the whole leg. If you stand at Mountain (standing up, hands at sides), raise your arms all the way up, stretching onto the balls of the feet. Then squat down staying on the balls of the feet, then come back up. IF THERE IS ANY PAIN, stop. :) inhale on the arms up, exhale SLOWLY coming down, then inhale back up.

This works best after you have warmed up a bit, so however you like to do that. If you are doing yoga for warming up, do 3-4 sun salutations. You can find the moves for those online if you are new to yoga. :) :)

Good luck, and let me know if those moves work or not! Also, Gaiam produces a lot of DVDs, so they might have a lower leg/knee specific DVD. www.gaiam.com.

Casey I have fibromyalgia and my whole body basically hurts. I also had back surgery a year ago and I really feel no difference. I have problems standing at any length of time, when walking I have to stop and let my hips rest, and sitting kills my hips and legs. I may be too far gone to help, but would love any ideas you would have. I'm 58 and in my mind I'm still very young and don't want to be this way forever. I've lost alot of muscle tone from not being able to do alot of exercise. If yoga could help me in any small way, I'd try it.

Casey, I think going for your training is so impressive !! I have been practicing for a while now and love the way I am gaining flexibility and movement. Even though I don't have alot of health issues I want to make sure I keep myself active and stretching and the movements yoga provide are helping me on a daily basis in my everyday life. I would strongly recommend folks give it a try. Even my hubbie enjoys yoga!

Hi Casey, good luck with you training! I have been practicing yoga for about 2 1/2 years & love it. I developed chronic back pain from scoliosis & osteoarthritis. I'm only 31 so knowing I'll have to deal with that pain for the rest of my life has been pretty overwhelming, but yoga has helped. I especially like going to hot yoga classes, it really helps with my back pain. I wish I could develop a more regular practice at home, but I mainly attend classes. Something about the group atmosphere is more motivating for me. AT home I get too sidetracked with all my chores or things that need to be done.
