Anybody here with any experience with diverticulitis? My DH had what we thought was a bout of food poisoning about a month ago. He was sick as dog and had major stomach pains that had him almost blacking out and me telling him we need to go to the ER. It finally started easing up and we thought it was food poisoning. Well, for the next three weeks, he apparently continued having stomach cramping and pain that formed a band around his stomach and back (he didn't share all of this with me). Finally, he had another bad attack and agreed to go to the doctor. He was sent for x-rays and the diagnosis was diverticulitis. The doctor basically explained that nobody really knows why you get it - some people only have it once and never again - some people battle it the rest of their lives - there isn't any one trigger because everybody is different, etc. He said that he wanted to see if we could clear it up with antibiotics first and then see if there is a recurrence and if so, we need to start looking at avoiding triggers, etc. So far, the antibiotics are working like a charm but last night, he ate some pizza and got sick (he thinks from the green peppers) and had the same type of stomach cramping as before. He says he feels fine now. I'm just worried about it. You read online about it but I'd rather hear first hand experiences with it. I just so want him to be okay. Thanks!

My son-in-law had the same symptoms, went to hosp and ended up having about a foot of his small intestine removed and was diagnosed with Chron's disease, has has only one small relapse in 3 years. Doctor told him he could eat anything unless he found out it bothers him. I think he avoids nuts.

Try Fiber One cereals. The twigs has 57% of fiber and works great. The Fiber One pop-tarts and cereal bars work great as well.

Good luck finding the right balance. I hope he is pain free soon.

I'm about to sign out- gotta run!
But try to avoid very high fiber foods like granola, seeds, and nuts. These stick in the pockets and can make you MISERABLE!!

Thanks, ladies. It looks like we're just going to have to figure this out as we go along. We're keeping a food diary and noting whenever he gets sick or has any pain so we can figure out if he has any specific triggers. The last time he got sick was last Sunday and he decided that it was the peach cobbler he ate Saturday night because he has a history of peaches not always sitting well with him - so that was a somewhat normal reaction. I'm researching natural remedies and will try those out on him to see if they help. So far, I've added a really good probiotic and some Metamucil to keep things moving along. I want to eventually have him get the bulk of his fiber from food but he's not a big fruit and veggie eater so that's going to be a challenge. I'm going today to find the ingredients to make a tea that is supposed to be good for anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic. So, we'll see if I can hit on something that will work for him :) Hope you all have a great New Years!

My ex-husband had it. His was so bad that it tore a hole in his colon and he was in and out of the hospital for several months. After a few surgeries, they removed the entire affected area. He was told to avoid eating anything with seeds, including strawberries, nuts, and stuff like that would aggravate his colon. After they had done the last surgery, he was able to eat anything again. I would talk with a dietitian to see what will be the best diet for him.

I hope you he feels better.

I have found that soda pop milk cheese to much fiber can have an effect on me. I have to really watch vegetables.

Can he go to a gastroenterologist? I do not know much about this disease, other that is is very painful, but I would try to see a specialist. Good luck, Carol
