My daughter is dating a great guy with 4 kids. She gets along well with them. One is a 13 year old girl. She has been a bit chunky as a kid and has been working on getting her weight under control but recently my DD discovered she is eating meals normally and then binge eating, like taking a pie crust out of the freezer, filling it with a can of apple pie filling and hiding out in the bathroom to eat the whole thing! At a recent family get together, after the meal she went in the kitchen when others were visiting and ate piece after piece of pie! Her mom had weight issues and then had bypass surgery. Would it be a good idea for DD to speak to her one-to-one or for her Dad to contact her school guidance counselor? Have any of you dealt with this with your own child, or yourself?

My niece is a binge eater. She is 28 now and has been obese her entire life. She is only 5' tall and her weight has become life threatening. Realizing that she can't stop, she is going to have stomach surgery January 3. She is having the type where they fold the stomach in half and staple it. This is her last resort to control her eating. She is getting counseling too and we are all praying this will work. It has been heart breaking to watch her get bigger and bigger every time we see her.

I think it would be best if your daughter discuss this with her boyfriend. They should contact the school and get this girl in to counseling before this serious problem haunts her for the rest of her life. I pray that she will get the help she needs and will be able to stop before drastic measures need to be taken. Best of luck to all of them.

Thanks for the concern. I'll check the local library first in case they have a copy of the book to share with my daughter and possibly get a copy for Megan. I know one of the elementary school counselors and will see her next week to check out what is available at the middle school. I'm sure they have experience dealing with this type of problem but I just don't know how well.
I'm pretty sure they can't afford private counseling.
After their visit to us on Christmas Day I have reason to believe she is bulemic as well. Please keep this young lady in your prayers.

Binge eating is a serious emotional eating disorder that most people don't understand. It's not about food; it's about filling an emotional void, and it's common among young girls and women who have poor self-esteem. It's serious because it can lead to detrimental health issues, including its flip-side, anorexia nervosa. I experienced both when I was in my college years, and I wish I'd had a good counselor with an understanding of this disorder. The important thing to realize is that it's not about food, so focusing on what she eats will not help. I'd recommend a counselor with experience in dealing with the emotional issues that characterize this illness. I hope she can get the help she needs, cause being caught up in this cycle is overwhelming and being an adolescent is difficult enough. I'm glad your DD is concerned about this; the best thing she can do is to be supportive. There are also support groups; maybe there's one in your area. I pray that this girl gets the help she needs because I remember what I went through, and how I felt I was the only person in the world with this problem. There are some good books written by a woman named Geneen (can't remember her last name--sorry) and one is called Feeding the Hungry Heart. That book was a life-saver for me. Bless you for caring about this young girl.
