My dentist says I grind my teeth, so he had me fitted for a night guard. I picked it up a few days ago and have tried to wear it for the last two nights. It is so bulky and it tastes strange. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get used to it? I'm sure I haven't given it enough time, but it's really awful!

Well, it's been a couple of weeks and I think I am used to the nightguard. I can fall asleep with it in now. Kathy, I think I need one like you mentioned. This one is saving my teeth but not helping my jaw at all. Maybe when I wear this one out I can talk to my dentist about the other kind.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I have had 2 night guards. The first one my orthodontist had made not long after my braces. It was great, more like a retainer and it snapped onto my lower and upper molars sorta locking my jaw in place. It kept me from grinding my teeth. Some years later had problems with grinding again and my dentist had me a night guard made. Big, bulky, yucky. It did protect my teeth but still allowed me to grind and did not help my jaw problems.
My daughter grinds and I hope her dentist will have one made like my first one.

I used to have to wear one also. I had it gorund down on one side. I don't think I do it as much now. But I remember the first few times I wore it. I just used a toothbrush and toothpaste. Especially after I took it out. Yuck! That helped alot. I hope you get used to it. It really helps gaurd your teeth.

I too soak mine in mouth wash, It is very hard to put in at the beginning I also found my self looking for it in the morning not remembering taking it out. I would wear mine during the day to get use to it. It worked. I have one over the counter so I had to make mine fit, but I got use to it also. Made a big change on my teeth.

It did take some time to get used to. Give it about a week

Yes, Amy the night guard is what I call "yucky". I found no easy way to get use to it but...I found after soaking (time and time again) it in denture cleaning bubble water (can not remember the name of the fizzy tablets???? UGH) that it seemed better. I remember gaging every night I put it in because of it being so bulky. I also remember waking up in the middle of the night just to take it out because of the taste. Now it is what it is :-) I really have not helped you out here but rest assure someone else is out there with a bulky night guard and loving every minute.

Good Luck!
