I wonder if anyone else is concerned with the high fructose in foods today. My dentist told me it is causing problems with my teeth and to be aware of its effects. I am reading on the internet that it causes heart problems and other things.

HFCs play havoc with anyone who has hyper- or hypo glycemia. I scour the labels and you have to watch because sometimes they sneak it in calling it something different. You can look it up online and it will tell you the other names they call it. Just like polyquaternium in the lotions,soaps and shampoo. The real name? formaldehyde.
Isn't it great knowing you can TRUST the FDA? I have read many things over the years and it has caused me to go back to cooking from scratch and not buying processed food. I won't even go into how much of certain things they allow to get into the food and call it safe.

I agree with you, HFCS is terrible for you. I have read the book You on a Diet & it talks in detail about what foods do to your body. I have been looking at bread labels & there are some out there that use raisin juice & molasses to sweeten, but you really have to look. I knew I had this recipe for English Muffins somewhere in my Family Fun mags, but I went to the site & here is the link. Of course you can alter it to use wheat if you like that.

Time to update this post - high fructose is still plaguing our food supply. I just wrote a column for my local paper about it & wanted to share:

“Buyer Beware: High Fructose Corn Syrup”

I'm waging a boycott. It may not affect much in the grand scheme, but I'm doing it because it affects me and mine; I'm doing it to cast my vote. I refuse to buy ANYTHING from the grocery store that contains high fructose corn syrup, no exceptions. You might not have noticed, unless you're an obsessive label-reader like me, that our food supply has been hijacked. The packages and products look the same, but their ingredients are being chemically tweaked and twisted to save big business a buck. And high fructose corn syrup is one of the worst infiltrators out there.

Until the 1970s, most of the sugar in our foods was sucrose from sugar cane. Then came high fructose corn syrup—thanks to corporate chemists—which is cheaper to produce. Now it's everywhere; take a look for yourself. It's in almost all sweet stuff like soda, flavored water, tea, jelly, ice cream, yogurt, cookies, candy, juice, you name it. But it's also hiding in many brands of breads, cereals, crackers, processed meats, canned fruit, salad dressings, ketchup, mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, applesauce, milk, and more.

Why is it so bad? To start with, high fructose corn syrup is made in a lab, much like Frankenstein's monster, using vats of murky fermenting liquid, fungus, and chemicals. And when fed to lab rats, fructose has nasty effects. Male rats don't reach adulthood due to anemia, high cholesterol, liver failure, and heart hypertrophy (that means their hearts enlarge until they explode). Females can't produce live young. Similar signs, over time, are being observed in humans. Because our bodies can't process it properly, nutrition experts blame high fructose for the skyrocketing levels of diabetes and obesity in America. Plus, it contributes to bone weakness and cancer. Paying a few cents more for sugar doesn't sound so bad, does it?

Okay, so the trick is to avoid high fructose. It's not easy at first, but it can be done, and soon it becomes second nature. Start reading labels, lots of labels, till you find items without it. If you can't find any, ask the grocer to offer better options.

Rule of thumb: The “Organic” label is an easy assurance that you're not getting high fructose corn syrup. "All natural" is NO GUARANTEE.

Sadly, in restaurants, you're going to eat high fructose corn syrup. Again, ask questions about ingredients and demand better.

Does anyone else feel frustrated by this?
I was just eating a piece of whole-wheat toast while reading this...I ran to the kitchen and checked the ingredients and you guessed it, hfcs was in my whole-wheat bread! I'm seriously going to be baking more myself...
I'm so thankful for my little vegetable garden out back too.
I'll definitely check out recipes for homemade english muffins!

Isn't it disheartening to read all that unnatural stuff on the list of food ingredients? High Fructose Corn Syrup, Partially Hydrogenated Oils, all those words I can't pronounce that end in -phates! All that stuff is so bad for you! Our bodies can't digest it and it can lead to things like cancer later on. It is no wonder so many people are getting sick nowadays. :)

One of my daughter's favorite snacks, graham crackers, is loaded with them. I just found a recipe online for homemade ones and I am going to try that next time! Sure beats paying 4.00 a box for the organic kind!

That's caused me to make a lot of stuff from scratch. It's in everything! I don't care where it is on the list, I won't buy products that contain it. I'm no purist, and I know I get some when I go out for meals, but I really want to minimize it. I'm hypoglycemic, and this stuff Is Not My Friend.

I am dismayed to find I can't even find many European jams anymore that don't contain it. If they put the stuff on a boat and send it here, it seems to be okay. But if they license their name and they produce it here, it seems to be a necessary ingredient. So this year, for the first time in probably ten years, I'm making my own jams again.

I went home and looked at my whole wheat muffins. Yup. There it was high fructose corn syrup. Here I thought I was being good!! Guess I have to make my own.

The new "natural" 7-Up has hfcs. Talk about false advertising.

I have found the same thing. It is in foods I never imagined like animal crackers. I can't believe it is in so many things and we give our kids these foods as children. I guess the best thing is to eat fresh fruits and veggies as much as possible and stay away from processed foods. This is an excellent reason to grow gardens or go to farmers markets for fresh. Soda is advertised and promoted so much and most people drink a lot of it.

I have been reading labels more and more too. It's a real uphill battle finding foods that don't contain HFC. Even my cereal that I thought was so healthy and nutritious has it. I bought a similar cereal that's organic and had my daughter try it thinking she would say, oh yeah, that's just as good Mom! Of course she didn't so I told her she can just get used to it.

I bought english muffins the other day and I chose whole wheat because I thought they would be better for me. Do you know what the second highest ingredient in them was? You guessed it - high fructose corn syrup! It is everywhere! And it is not good for us at all.

Stay away from soda pop..it's loaded with high fructose corn syrup. It's in a lot of foods that we don't even think of as "sweet"

High fructose corn syrup is horrible stuff and it's in a lot of foods. Research shows it promotes diabetes and obesity, heart disease and more. It's been shown to cause us to feel hungry after a complete meal because we don't process the hormone grehlin like we should. It effects the way we absorb vitamins and minerals. It's worth an hour or two of research time to learn about it.
