What are some FarmGirl remedies for eczema? I have a friend whose daughter has it & asked what else she could try.

I have heard that drinking RAW milk is supposed to be one of the best ways to heal it!

I don't have eczema, but that's what I have heard. It's worth a try!

Karla,

I have self-diagnosed myself with eczema. After many years of various skin 'episodes', I finally did some online research and figured out it sounded the most like eczema. I had itchy patches all over the inside of my elbows and my arms/hands for almost a year until I went to a national eczema website (sorry, I don't remember the address, though I can find it). Here is what I did and it WORKS, IT WORKS, IT WORKS.

First off, you can't use 'regular' soaps. No way, no how. They strip your skin of the needed oils. Currently, I am using Dove Sensitive Skin soap. I use this for my body as well as my hair. I would also like to try/make a homemade soap, but for now, this is working. Anyway, I can tell that this soap is very mild because typically regular soap makes my poor face dry out and literally peel right after a shower. (EW)

Next, no really hot baths or showers, and you need to take at least 2 short showers/baths daily. Three short showers is ok, too.

Then, crucial step number two is you MUST moisturize within three minutes of getting out of the shower/bath. This is what saved me, other than the soap thing. I went on that website and currently am using a moisturizer called CeraVe, which I found on the bottom shelf at WalMart. Go figure. It is about 14 dollars but it has lasted me about 4 months and I still have plenty left. You apply the moisturizer, paying close attention to those broken out areas, and gently rub it in until it is gone. Here is the reasoning behind the bath/moisturizer thing. Moisturizers form a barrier which traps moisture into the skin. SO, they work best when you apply to damp skin, because they are trapping in that moisture you received from your bath. I'm telling you, literally, after 2 days, I had no more itching, and I have only had very minor breakouts. This has been since about March of this year, I believe.

I tried calamine, hydrocortisone, topical Benedryl. You name it. The only thing that actually worked was the Rx Medrol (oral corticosteriod, I believe) and who wants to do that? Who would have thought that frequent showers + moisturizer would do the trick??? At first, I did take 2-3 very short showers a day, just to wet my skin. Now I can get by on a shower a day w/o suffering the consequences. I do have a slight breakout on my elbows, which I attribute to the fact I have forgotten to moisturize a couple of times. (oops) Anyway, I had suffered over a year with weird round itchy patches and this solved my problem. I hope this helps your friend's DD, too!!!

I don't mind it either! lol I love it, reminds me of when my mom and grandma would slather me in it. Reminds me of how much they loved me!

I also even like the scent of it!

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that the clear doesn't seem to work as good. I thought it must be psychological or something!

My mom used to soak me in an oatmeal bath and then rub me with Calamine lotion. Not sure if they even make Calamine lotion anymore. I do think it worked, but I hated the pink lotion all over me. *LOL*

I know the health food stores have a variety of creams that sometimes help. I did not know about baking soda! Also, walgreens carries natural products for it in the baby section that may be helpful!

I have been taking Evening Primrose oil every day. I buy the capsules. I have not had a problem since. I would get real red and scaly on my face. Not anymore.

My daughter had to go completely off dairy. Plus we use comfrey salve as a topical when she has an outbreak. Heals it up quick.

Do what you love, love what you do.

My first daughter had it from birth. I tried all kinds of lotions and potions from the dr, till she was 6 months old which only seemed to help for a few minutes, maybe a hour then it was back.

I gave up, and decided to try just using baking soda to wash her with, no soap, and no shampoo. The first time I used it on her, her exzema was gone and has never returned! She's almost 4 years old now.

My second daughter was also born with it. Right away I went to the baking soda. For her the first time helped but didn't "cure" her, so the second time I put the baking soda on thicker and let it set for a few minutes. Then rinsed. She's now almost 4 months old and it's been gone since that second time I used the baking soda!

Also tell her at bathtime put oatmeal (just the plain, regular quaker stuff in the big bags) in a face cloth or cheese cloth, tie it with a hair band and pop it under the running water. Also squeeze the bag over the eczema areas while bathing. It's soothing and works well to give relief. Also when my eczema flares up I find that using Aveno lotion with menthol in it soothes the itch (which is very important) and moisturizes the best and it's not stingy.

Also drink lots of water to keep hydrated.

Vitamin E has always worked pretty well and it doesn't burn like salicylic acid that is in most Eczema creams does. I use the gel vitamins and just pop them open. Then dab the oil wherever I am having troubles. :) Mostly my face..it penetrates pretty well so its one of those things that if you put on you, it is going to feel greasy but it surely does its job. :)
Hope that helps :D
