Posted - May 29 2010 : 10:23:27 AM My Husband just wrecked his motorcycle. Of course he won't go to the hospital to be checked out. He has a 2-3 inch split on his head on the back and some road rash. Does anyone out there know what I need to watch him for? The paramedic at the wreck said to wake him every 2 hours or so during the night and make sure he's coherent. Is there anything else I need to do?

Posted - Jun 03 2010 : 7:18:53 PM I wanted to update everyone. Hubby's doin really good. The headaches stopped by the second day and he isn't limpin anymore. His arm is still really raw and will be nasty sore for quite a while. His head has shed most of the swellin and is lookin much better. I woke him evey hour the first night and he never was incoherent or confused. I will say he has been more than a little grumpy, but that's to be expected. We almost have the bike back together. It will be next year before we can get all the dented and scraped metal repaired, but it is runnin fine. I think when we get the last of the neccessary work done he will be a lot happier.

Posted - May 30 2010 : 07:07:25 AM Wow, I hope he is ok this morning. That is nothing to mess with. I worry about my hubby when he's riding his motorcycle. He's not as quick as he used to be anymore. That's why I don't ride with him. There was a guy killed last week on his. Bad wreck. I do hope he gets checked out soon. Are you doing anything for the cut on his head?
Kris

Posted - May 29 2010 : 6:08:33 PM Angela, that is one of my worst fears. I sold both my bikes last year and my husband is selling his last one this year. Watch him carefully and if you see any pupil dialation or spaciness, go to the ER. Prayers out to you and your DH.

Posted - May 29 2010 : 12:46:42 PM Count your lucky stars, Angela!
Do keep an eye on the size of his pupils when you are checking on him. If they are larger or smaller than normal or don't respond to a candle or flashlight you should get him to the doctor pronto as there may be swelling. Another thing is to have him count backwards from ten or ask him to spell his name backwards. Also ask what day it is. Just keep an eye out for anything that doesn't seem right with his behavior, mood or cognition. If he complains of a severe headache that's another sign of concussion.
My brother was in a similar accident about 10 years ago but instead of a ditch his was a situation where new asphalt had just been put down on the road surface and the city hadn't yet filled up the gravel on the shoulder. It was dark. There was a 10 inch drop-off next to the driveway he tried to swerve into to avoid the car that pulled out in front of him and the impact caused him to lose control. He hit a fence post and was thrown 25 feet. He had broken bones and a moderate concussion but was okay. He tried to sue the City but they were somehow able to wiggle their way out of any responsibility.
Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Posted - May 29 2010 : 12:11:30 PM The accident is listed as no fault, but I think the state road dept should be to blame. The driveway where it happened is completely blocked from veiw due to trees. The car pulling out couldn't see him and he couldn't see the car. He took the ditch, but got pretty bummed up. The property owner has complained about the trees for years and just get ignored. Gotta Love The Government!!

Posted - May 29 2010 : 11:16:20 AM OH my gosh!! I hope he's ok!! If my hubby was up, I would ask him what to watch for - he's good about that stuff, but my guess is that the paramedics told you what you need to know (waking him up and everything). Keep us informed on how he is, ok? How did he wreck the bike? What an awful start to the holiday weekend! HUGS!
