It's not for me, it's for my ex husband. Since we divorced five years ago, he kind of went off the deep end. Drugs, alcohol, and God only knows what else. He is moving out of town to try and get his life back in order, but his first and most dangerous obstacle is gastritis (or so a doctor told him a year ago). He cannot keep his food down. He said maybe two whole meals in the last six weeks. He needs to gain weight, he might weigh 120lbs and is 5'11''. He's scared, I'm scared, and when I talked to him tonight I told him I would ask my farmgirl friends for advice and recommendations. The kids know something is wrong. He has no energy so he sleeps most of the time. I think it's to that point.

Prayers needed also.

Tea of the slippery elm bark is a very soothing drink. It's quite thick and, well, slippery as the name implies, but it helped me greatly.

Thank you again. I have talked to him about an endoscopy, unfortunatly he's one of those guys that has to be in an emergency situation to go to the doctor. He thinks he can help himself.
I told him about aloe vera juice and your other suggestions and advice. Whether he'll take it or not, only God knows.
As an update, he has gained weight and is feeling positive about life.
I really appreciate your help!

I had my gallbladder out and I have to be very careful of foods that I eat. I will pay seriously for eating foods that are too greasy. I can do spicy. I have cut almost all fried food out because of the pain and the gas and loose stools. Your tummy will tell you if you have crossed the line. I battle with IBS. Salad can be a really bad choice.

You can get an up or down endoscopy. Down goes down your mouth and Up goes up your rectum. You are asleep or in "twilight" for it. You have no memory of it. He should have both. It isn't as bad as it sounds. Both my parents get them regularly.

Coffee can be a very bad choice at this time. Peppermint tea is a good choice. If he smokes, that isn't good either. Grapefruit can be bad.

Aloe vera juice can heal in your tummy. It tastes terrible, but my father in law healed an ulcer with it. He had amebic dystentary from being a prisioner of war in Japan.

Sorry about the graphic descriptions.

I agree with Robin...there is a lot that can be done to help with this problem but avoiding treatment could have severe consequences. A G.I. (gastrointestinal) specialist would be his best bet. Don't let him ignore this though, sometimes it can result in life threatening problems. I don't mean to sound so scary, but it is something that shouldn't be ignored or treated lightly.

An endoscopy is where they stick a camera down your throat into your stomach and a little lower. Its not as bad as it sounds. They give meds so you dont notice much. Carafate is a drug that coats your stomach so it can heal. Its prescription. I ate boiled veggies, like potatoes, carrots, etc anything you like. A tiny amount of butter for flavor. Mild foods and lots of small meals. Large meals are harder to digest and the tummy needs to rest. Thats why raw foods are harder on your tummy. Whole grain grain and pasta. Depending on what his dx is, he may have to cut out hot and greasy, may also have to cut acidic foods. I did, because I make too much acid. I can now have some, but it took a long time and I dont have them everyday. Good luck to him.

Robin and Amy - thank you so much for the info. Can you tell me what an endoscopy is? And what is carafate?
Robin, Do you have any specific boiled foods that you ate and can your stomach actually heal from the gastritis? He loves greasy and spicy foods, so he's having trouble finding good food to eat. Maybe some of Mary Janes food?

He needs and endoscopy. I had chemical gastritis for over a year and half. I had to eat very mild and non greasy foods. Veggies had to be cooked. I couldnt even tolerate raw veggies. Boiled foods and hot cereals were my mainstay. Mine started because of the ibuprofen I took for neck and back pain. I have IBS as well. My stomach issues brought on depression. I take meds now acid blocking. because my gallbladder is gone extra acid backs into my tummy. I may have to take them for the rest of my life. I also took carafate which helped heal my stomach and esophagus. It really took a lot of time. You cant cheat on the foods because you will feel it instantly. I eat some spicy foods now but only rarely. I hope he gets better. Its a rough road.

Aloe vera juice to heal, yogurt to bring in health bacteria.

Have him make sure that he doesn't have a bowel blockage, as this can be very bad. Tell him to get the endoscopy no matter what.

Good luck

Thank you Sherrye
I wish I knew more, but in reality, he is so far removed from my life I was actually surprised he called to let me know what was going on. I don't know what he is willing/not willing to do to help himself. I just thought I could throw some ideas, recipes that are easy on the stomach, herbal remedies, etc his way in hopes that he will take the steps to heal.

i am sorry for him, he must be very sick to be that thin. my sister was sick a lot and had belly aches. it ended up being gall stones. there is also a bacteria that lives in the stomach that can grow out of control. when folks abuse themselves the bacteria can flourish. it is called h-pylori. he can have a blood test for it or an endoscopy. just random ideas sherrye
