I have recently been diagnosed with asthma. I hate to take chemical medicines and I even had my heart rate shoot up with the inhaler they gave me to take the breathing test. They want me to take a medicine that has side effects like: Mood changes, depression, hallucinations, sleep walking, suicidal thoughts, tremors, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. I would like some relief from the pain and shortness of breath, but there has to be a better way. The doctor believes that my constant post nasal drip and allergies are making things much worse. I already eat a very healthy diet, vegetarian, all whole organic foods, omega 3's for flax and hemp. Does anyone have any idea on something I can try. I hate the thought of having to take the chemical poison the doctors recommend.

Ladies, I have struggled with chronic bronchial asthma/bronchitis for years? Does anyone know if coffee, decaf makes it worse? What foods? Since moving to Ks it seems a lot worse. I wont, and cannot take the inhalers due to b/p and heart issues. I will try the peppermint!! Thanks, Linda

For all you Farmgirls interested in the Peppermint remedy for Asthma.
Simply one drop on the outside of my hand, i licked it off and immediate results..it opened up my closed off throat...someone helped
me as i experienced a attack. Question if i am 100% raw now? No..wish i had stayed though, i felt like flying with all the best
energy on this earth. Now that it's summer, the best time to give it a try and old habits are hard to stop..that was my problem..
enjoying too many goodies that i was used to. But..you only want pure digestable peppermint from a most reliable source and i
swear by Young Living Oils. They are more money, but pure and used for health problems.
Good Luck to anyone with Asthma...i cured myself...i always say...you know your own body...my doctor was amazed! He told me to keep
doing what i am doing...you can also drop some in tea, water, or
mix with agave or honey and take by the teaspoon..delicious!
Peppermint Lemonade! Yummy!!

Jeanette - explain a little more about the peppermint oil for me please. Do you inhale it from your hand or does it help from you body absorbing it??? I am curious. I gave up on my advair disc a long time ago. The side effects were just too much. I read alot of terrible things in regards to the advair so I did not feel I was really too far off base. Thanks for the info on the peppermint oil. Crosby Mint farm is having their ý26th Annual Mint Festival
August 13th, 14th, & 15th. Love their peppermint oil!

Dear Jane,
I had Asthma for many years and was tired of all the side effects. I went to a Wheatgrass place to detox this past March and
went "raw and organtic" i carry Young Living Oil, "peppermint" with me. One drop on my hand if a asthma attack comes. Which
i haven't had one. I am off my asthma meds..singulair and advair disc which have side effects which i do not want to live with.

I have asthma too. Hydration is very important. I also use a combination of Acupuncture, Western Medicine and Naturpathic medicine to control my asthma. I'm still on medications (Flonase, Advair, Singulair) but use the minimum dosages and can sometimes take them every other day or not at all during the winter. Both of my Western medical doctors are very open minded and respect alternative medicine. They've given me the flexibility to adjust the doses as I need to so when I have a bad cold I can use more, and when I'm feeling well I can cut back or eliminate all together. My Naturopath understands that asthma is a serious condition and does not advocate stopping the drugs but rather working with them to improve my health in other ways. The acupuncturist works magic on not only the asthma symptoms but also the anxiety and sugar cravings that come with the package. Finding this combination has given me my life back after years of being uncontrolled.

When I was first diagnosed I tried all sorts of tinctures and other remedies and did not take my medications as prescribed. During that time my asthma was totally out of control. I couldn't work or be active without being out of breath and even ended up in the ER. My recommendation based on my own personal experience is to follow the doctor's orders and get your condition stabilized. Then begin carefully experimenting with alternatives until you find the right combination. Asthma is a potentially life threatening disease if not carefully managed, and it is not realistic to expect that you can treat the condition without traditional drugs. But you can try to find ways to reduce dependence on them.

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Hi all, I have had asthma for several decades and am still looking for a totally natural treatment that can replace the stuff the doc has me on. I was just reading about histamine intolerance. it can cause asthma and lots of other things like migraines, IBS etc. try googling it and you will find lots of foods that are high in histamine. I don't know that it will help, but worth checking out. one of the foods that are high in histamine and should be avoided is tomatoes. now I think that's just not fair right in the middle of homegrown tomato season. LOL.

just thought I would mention it, just found it yesterday so don't know if it will make a difference. I know the last time I had allergy testing I wasn't allergic to anything, but had a strong reaction to histamine. the doc say's well you are allergic to something, but I don't know what. so I suspect it may be a problem for me.Hey Sara, I think you should sell all that nettle and make a fortune. LOL. good luck all. Phyllis

I also have severe asthma and have had four serious hospitalizations in the last two years. Now here is what I am doing/taking: I take Quercetin which you can find in the health food store. I take two capsules a day. I also started seeing a homeopathic physician who prescribed some remedies - one that seems to help is Veratum/Chamomilla.I am also seeing an allergist and getting LDA Lose dose allergen therapy every 6 weeks. These are allergy shots coupled with an enzyme to help rally the immune system. I still need to take some traditional medications for asthma (singular, asthmanax) but I am completely off of inhalers now and prednisone free. Anyone who has been on prednisone for asthma knows how terrible that it - not just the side effects but the serious long term consequences. However sometimes we need those just to stay alive...I think that it is very hard to avoid allergens since so many tend to be environmental and even with other allergies it is difficult because allergies are always changing. Sometimes we get over allergies and sometimes we develop new ones. Often it is a matter of a weakened immune system brought on by stress etc. My aunt used to swear by drinking nettle tea. I have not tried it, but when i look across the farm and see so much stinging nettles that the critters won't eat, I think boy I am sitting on a century's worth of tea for asthma!! Good luck, Sara

Keeping well hydrated helps me. If I feel asthma coming on I sometimes drink one of my kid's pedialytes or gatorades. I have a habit of not drinking enough. I also reach for anti-inflammatory foods. I drink the Bragg's health drink when my asthma kicks up (2 tsp organic ACV, 2 tsp organic local honey and 8 ounces of water twice a day) Nasal drip can make you feel short of breath what about asking your doctor for a nasal spray that goes right to the source. I avoid my triggers (cats, wood smoke..) I also wear a scarf over my mouth when it is cold. I also use my prescribed inhaler.

My asthma is triggered by cold air (adult onset). My flights to Australia & back have knocked me for a loop. I've been using these 2 inhalers since Mother's Day and I still haven't knocked it out. I'm going to go buy the Bach's to see if it will help. I despise these inhalers but breathing is a good thing...

Swimming it helps to build up your lungs. And the moisture you breath in helps too. If it is nasal drip I would try a Netti pot too. It will rinse out your sinus cavities and relieve the post nasal
drip.

Hi Jane,
I have gotten a lot of help from remedies carried by Uriel pharmacy. When I was practicing midwifery, I used their products a lot. Moving to TX has helped my allergies a TON.
I used these remedies for allergies:
Querus Cinas ( allergies) a homeopathic
Berberus prunus a nasal ointment for stuffy/ runny nose
Breatheze- for asthma. Breatheze is a prescription, but I could call it in for you.
It is herbal. It opens my bronchi right away, and brings up to mucus produced when I has asthma. It may not eliminate your need for other meds, but it may greatly reduce them. I can't predict how it would work for you. I have not used my inhaler since moving to TX. I needed to de stress and get away from allergen- rich California!! I did sometimes have to use my inhaler when I was in CA, mainly since Breatheze needs to be stored in the fridge and I got really flared up when camping.
Nettles, even freeze dried in capsules, are very good for allergies.

The only thing I can suggest is get an allergy test done. Most adult onset asthma is allergy related, or so my dr told me. I try to avoid any foods that trigger a reaction and there is also a homopathic treatment available for allergies, you might have to look for someone who practices in homopathics. Also check your local whole foods or organic food stores, they might carry Bach's Remedy's. They make an allergy and an asthma remedy that is organic and homopathic. But please keep the resuce inhaler close at hand, because sometime, as much as you hate it, that may be the only thing that will save you. Both my son and I have severe asthma/allegies and the Bach's works for us. I am like you and I hate putting something into my system that has so many side effects, especially when they seem worse than the aliment that they are to treat. Oh and one other side effect that the medications don't tell you about it an increase in the # of visits to the outhouse (not pleasent)

This year is already stacking up to be one of the worst on record for pollen counts, that may be why your recent diagnosis of asthma as well. Try wearing a sergical mask (I know they are not the latest in fashion statements) they help to reduce the # of allergiens that can get into your system, especially on high pollen days. Hope this helps.
