Alrighty ladies, I just found out I'm pregnant with my 3rd! SURPRISE!! Not planned but not completely unplanned either. I'm 40 my husband is 42..I'll be 41 when baby is born. I'm still pretty early (9 weeks today) and doing well..saw "lima bean" baby's heartbeat yesterday with an early ultrasound..what a relief! I've been feeling mighty icky lately...VERY sick to my stomach but no vomitting....very fatigued...I think I have a spring cold on top of it all.. I rest whenever I can..I'm in bed with my kids usually by 730pm or 8 pm, which means I'm getting a good 8 - 10 hours every night! But, generally feel pretty blah...nothing sounds good to eat, nor does anything taste very good either. This is all very new to me.. My 2 other pregnancies were very mild in comparison. I do have to admit that I ate a small slice of homemade chocolate cake this morning and I can not tell you how good that made me feel...seriously..crackers just end up a dry ball in the back of my throat but this silky cake did the trick! So, any advice out there? Any things to watch out for? I could use a little encouragement that having babies after 40 is A ok!! I started late having babies in the first place. My son was born when I was 36, daughter at 38....I think I need a little cheering section!!
Many warm smiles to you, Julia Hayes

Hi, Julia, glad to see you're feeling better. I should say my mother had her last at age 42, but then it was her fourth...you know, back in the day. And also, she had me, who at age 10 was a just right baby sitter for the baby sister...I fed, dressed, changed and comforted. My baby sister (I also have a middle sister) now has the rocking chair that I used to rock her in...well, my mom rocked her too, and my dad, I guess, but they're both gone now, so she gets my vibes from it. It was kinda funny, cause baby sis was born in February and the Christmas before, I got the full practice gifts: baby doll, carriage, feeding kit with bottles, sterilizer, measuring cup & funnel to mix and fill the bottles, dish, spoon - my mother wasn't a dummy - she had me panting to take care of my real live baby doll sister. Oh well, just thought I'd share.
Now, you had mentioned about maybe having a Farm Girl Chapter meeting the 3rd weekend in June, and if you're not up for that, I sure understand, so let us know, okay? I guess since school is out, you're not driving past Zak anymore, huh?
Take it easy, hope to talk to you soon. Hugs, Judy

Hey, Julia!

I must have missed your original posting from when my Australian friend was visiting in early May! I heard, via another local farmgirl, you are pregnant and spotted your post as an "Active Topic" today. Congratulations!

I'm glad things are going along well. I had just turned 38 when Linnea was born. I was SICK for the first three or four months and even with my old egg, I gave birth to one of the most amazing beings... Linnea has been an extremely happy, inquisitve, and healthy kid.

I have a good friend who had her daughter at 40. I didn't know her at the time, but it seems as though she's said she wasn't sick during the pregnancy, etc. I think she even had a home birth.

Continue keeping us up to date with your progress and feelings.

Julia - congratulations on your prenancy! I just found this thread, and enjoyed reading all the way through. My niece-in-law just had a baby at 42, and with a heart condition that had to be watched, but she did fine and has a healthy baby girl.

Now that the first tri-mester is over, I am glad to hear you are feeling better. So happy for you that another little one is on the way!

Peace

Okay, Julia - my "sense" is a little girl... BUT - inasmuch as I only have boys (well a boy and soon to be another) by better judgement says - BOY! How's that for indecisive!!! How fun to feel the first little flutters. I'm thinking that if the mom-to-be THINKS that it's the babe, then it IS the babe.

I'm so glad you are feeling good most of the time - that makes such a difference in mood and motivation, for sure. I can SO understand the doritos and coke thing - lately I've had an odd weakness for rootbeer floats with french vanilla ice cream (the kind with little vanilla specks in it)...

XOXO, Libbie

Greetings Ladies! Thank you for all the support and encouragment. Here's a quick update for you!
I am fast approaching 14 weeks! I am feeling great most of the time. I have these weird out of the blue moments where I feel just gross..sick to my stomach, headachey and just down-right blah. BUT, like I said, most of the time I feel full of energy, and in touch with what makes being a woman so sacred. Baby is growing just great..have heard the heart beat several times. Have had a few ultrasounds....keeping close tabs on granny over here! My other children are excited about a baby in mama's belly. very cute! Been busy getting ready for farm fair and playing in the gardens. School just ended for the summer so this affords me a lot more time in the mornings again. SO GREAT!! I am starting to have a little belly now. I tend to completely round out in the belly area...I get the full-blown buddha look and later on I get a nice round basketball tummy! I've gained about 2 pounds is all.. Been very active, watching what I eat etc..although, yesterday I totally indulged in one of my all time favorite junk foods... I know, I know..doritos and a coke!! It was fabulous..let me tell you!! I'm feeling little flutters but can't tell if its baby or some other weird bodily function!
Overall, feeling very earth motherish..more so than normal, I'm afraid!
Thanks again...and I think we should take a poll on how many sense I'm having a girl or a boy!!! I'll know in another month or so.. I'm thinking I'm going to have a......hmmmmm... I think I'll just keep the suspense going! hee hee hee
Many smiles to each of you!

I just wanted to say congrats to you on your pregnancy. My mother had me at age 42. I was her last child born and I was number 5. My oldest brother is 11 years older than me. Growing up I never thought my mom was too old or tired to raise me. Today she is 74 years old and still running around doing her thing and is always cheerful, bright, and alert. Good luck with your pregnancy.

Julie, I swear, the body is infinitely wise and while you are having to pee every hour or two, this is your body's way of saying, "Hey you're in training!" Baby may wake up and need to nurse or be comforted in a very similar pattern for the first little while. Don't worry..you will be well trained! I remember when my son was born and I was hopping out of bed every few hours until I came to my senses and said, "this is crazy!" I brought him in bed with me, which is something I never planned to do, and he was our co-sleeper for 3 years! He's was a wonderful bed-fellow.. Once he was in my bed nursing and sleeping on top of me, he slept 4 hours straight..Heaven!! My daughter was completely different. She wanted to get right to business nursing and then be in her own space.. She slept in her crib right away and was a great night-time sleeper. She's a very independent person to this day.. Amazing! This third one? I have no idea what to expect....Its all so fun.. Good luck my friend... all will be well!
Many happy preggar regards, Julia Hayes

Rebecca,
This is my first baby! My doctor did warn me to stay away from the carbs (like my favorite pig out food, potatoes in any form), basically the whites including rice, bread, and potatoes. Brown rice and whole wheat bread are fine. The reason is that I was one point away from failing my gestational diabetes test. But everything else is good, my bp is normal, I'm not anemic (which most women become anemic to some extent during pregnancy he said), I haven't gained too much weight. So everything is good. I go swimming a couple times a week at the Y, take walks and do housework/gardening. I just got back from Boston, one day I think we walked about 7 hours. I just go at a slow pace and take breaks when i need to. The worst thing I hate is getting up every hour and half to 2 hours to pee. Hate that!!! Because I'm a pretty light sleeper anyway, and then I can find it hard to go back to sleep. Oh well, enough rambling for now.

get out the ginger root! just shread a 1/2tsp into hot water for tea or into your water bottle with ice and it calms the quessies instantly. water was making me feel ill, but this did the trick! I could eat and do anything with ginger close by....I wish i had learned this trick with#1 instead if #7!!

Good morning ladies, just wanted to give you a wee update from this expecting 40 year old. Am fast approaching 10wks..still feeling completely run down by the end of the day. Am trying not to get too discouraged that I can't accomplish outside what I had wanted/intended to..am trying to lighten up about that.. Don't have much of an appetite yet..still feeling blah in the tummy most of the time but completely manageable. I'm able to eat one good meal a day but that's about it..a few small healthy snacks here and there but nothing too major.. I'm getting recipes for smoothies because those sound soooooo yummy! I'm hoping the next few weeks will see the yuckos subside and some nice energy come on back. My husband says pregnancy suits me..that's about the sweetest thing to say...Still trying to wrap my head around the idea of another baby in the house....I'm starting to get some pretty cool images..its such a great feeling!! I know I needn't get down on myself for not accomplishing more...it isn't an expectation thing so much as a derailment of the mind: I wasn't expecting to be working this Spring-Summer-Fall pregnant and that has completely changed my plans..just trying to adjust is all..some days are better than others!!!
cheers!! Julia Hayes

Alison -- you tell those nosy people that you'll be having babies when you feel the time is right for you!!! Don't let age have anything to do with it. Kids really tie you down so take time while you're young to have lots of fun!

Thanks all so much to you ladies! I've been dealing with a lot of the "When are you having babies?" questions because gosh, I'll be 30 in a couple weeks and I must be an old lady now. What a hoot! You've all just given me a lot of confidence and inspiration. I have plenty of productive years ahead of me and can tell all the nosy nobody's that I'm not running of time to have kids, despite what they say.

There isn't one shred of medical eveidence that pregnancy and birth over 40 is more difficult or compromising for mother or baby. Get lots of fresh air and keep a happy mind. Eat cake and love your family. There's nothing like a dose of happiness to get rid of nonsensical worries or doubts! Congratulations!

How many children do you have? This is my 4th pregnancy, let's just say I eat whatever won't eat me first and I'm waaaay more relaxed about it. I'm actually burned out on barbeque now. For my 2nd trimest it was the thing I most craved. I don't crave anything now. I just have a normal appetite.

So, you have about 9 weeks to go. Things have gone well for you so far?

Rebecca,

My due date is July 5th. I am going out of town for a week, I just took my email off because of spam. I thought my email was listed when you click on my name or profile but I'm not sure. Let me look into how to do this. Or we could just set up a time when I get back to meet at Van's. I try to be really good and eat mostly veggies, whole grains etc, but sometimes I just want a big ole hunk o meat!!! I'm sure Vans can fulfill that craving.

Congrats! I had my last at 42! Everything went fine.I did get high blood pressure and the doc put me on bed rest, but I snuck out into the garden and when hubby read my b.p. there it was normal.I just had to keep my hands in the dirt! Dan only weighed in at 5 lbs.but he gained weight fast. The others were only 6 lbs anyway. I did sleep lots tho. Can't remember having anything taste yucky, except coffee. But that was only for a couple of months. All the kids were in the delivery room.I figured with the 10 yr.old it might be good birth\sex control issues in later years! The kids did great tho,I had an awesome doc too. My sister'caught' Dan and gave him to me! Just having to remind friends of older kids, can't always do stuff at spur of the moment.Gotta get a sitter or farm him out to friends! The older kids ALWAYS have SOMETHING to do! Did gain LOTS of weight!!!!

THANK YOU all so very much!! You have really helped me re-focus my energy on baby versus blah feeling! I am actually having a great morning so far.. Was able to eat well yesterday and this morning and my cold seems to be taking a back burner, which is a huge relief. I really appreciate all the encouragement. My nurse-practitioner said that I face no more risk having a third at 40 than I did having my first at 36 and second at 38..that feels really good too. I swear, if I pay too much attention to all the statistics I'd convince myself that no one can have a baby without some kind of horrific anomoly, instead of just the opposite..most people have perfectly healthy babies and deliveries most of the time...
JulieKay, congratulations to you too!! My son was born on July 12th.. Are you planning on doing a body cast?? I've done one for each of my children and will do one for this one too.. I my casts hanging in my sewing room. They are a delight to look at and remember. Thanks again ladies, this was an excellent way to begin my morning..

Congratulations!!! My Mom was 40 when she found out she was pregnant with me and she turned 41 just 3 days after I was born. I think I turned out ok, healthy and was an A student in school. There weren't that many older Moms 30-some years ago, so she felt a little out of place at first. Now she would have a lot of company. I remember reading somewhere that the odds of getting pregnant with your own egg and not taking any fertility treatments are something like 1 in 500,000 when you are over 40. I'm always telling my Mom she should play the lottery.
Good luck & keep us all posted as to how you're doing.
