Can anyone here explain trans fat to me? How is this different from saturated fat or unsaturated fat? I haven't found trans fat in anything in my kitchen except margarine. I've been hearing about how bad it is. Is it just the same as hydrogenated oil - but with a new catchy name?

We drink our milk raw and love it. I gave up buying margerine long before we got the cow, just didn't feel good about it. It is nice to be able to have fresh butter, cream, yogurt and cheese as well as milk and know exactly what that cow ate!!
I have been trying really hard to eliminate high fructose corn syrup too...and boy..it IS hard. had to send treats for a cubscout activity the other day and they wanted storebought (??!!!) and there just wasn't anything I wanted my own sons to eat so I ended up sending oranges and string cheese. My boys were fine with it, but since most moms send Little Debbie snacks or donuts from the local bakery I am sure it wasn't a favorite. Oh well.

On high fructose corn syrup - I learned a couple of days ago that it damages the immune system. AHA! We've all but eliminated hfcs from our diet in the last six months - and nobody has allergy problems in our house this year. A sniffle now and then, but that's it. I'm usually suffering wickedly from tree pollens by now. My Blazer and greenhouse are covered in a heavy film of pollen and I'm feeling great!

Annab.. From the research I have done, it is not the fats in the milk that clogs our arteries, it is the homogination process that changes the fats that cause the clog. Homoginization whips up the fats and changes them so our body's chemistry does not recognize it as food and does not know what to do with it. Natural raw milk is a "perfect" food in its natural form, very healthy. The worst I have heard of but never seen is salmonila, flu lke symptoms. this is very rare. milk has natural antibodies that protect it, even the souring process is good for our digestion..ie yogurt, even raw sour cream is good for us I have been told, but have not yet been brave enough to try! (hey I just learned to trust nettle tea! It does not burn!!)

If I can remember to do so, we may be making the swich to organic milk too. I overheard someone say how the ultra pasturization kills the bad and the good.

So to you dairy maids out there...what's the worst that could happen by drinking just the straight from the cow stuff after it has been refrigerated??

I know it has all the other solids which are great for butter and tasty things like that. Hubby and I ride bikes regularly and we don't drink a lot to begin with, so the artery clogging aspect would only be a minor concern a this point.

Thank you for explaining that. We switched to margarine (and we don't eat packaged food anyway and premade cakes and cookies) because of the cost of butter AND the fact that animal fats contain so many cancer-causing organochlorines. We couldn't afford organic, but I think it's time we switched to organic butter, milk, and cheese. At least butter is a food and I've always felt that way. It's so hard to do the best for your family when margarine is 50 cents a pound and butter is $4 or more a pound.

Any thing that says hydrogenated or partial hyrogenated is tras fats.
They just changed the law and now foods will have to be marked tras fat but it will take a while to go into effect, It is in MOST prepared food. My family has been off trasfats for a while. It takes a lot of lable reading especially for the kids foods cookies and most crackers have it. most microwave popcorn, lots of snack foods.
Hydrogenated Oils This is the process which turns polyunsatureated fats, ones that are liquid at room temperature, into solids at room temperature, margarine. Oils such as soy, corn, cottenseed and canola are mixed with tiny metal particles, usually nickel oxide. Hydrogen gas is added to the oil and nickel in a high-pressure, high-temperature reactor. Soap-like emulsifersand starch are added into the mixture to give it a better consistency and then is steam cleaned at high temperatures. This removes the unpleasant odor.
*Hydrogenated fats are associated with many serious diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes, obesity, immune system dysfunction, low-birth-weight babies, birth defects, decreased visual acuity, sterility, difficulty in lactation and problems with bones and tendons.
Saturated fats are natural fats from mostly animals "Butter" etc a little of these is good in your diet.
Unsaturated fats are the better fats and oils "Olive oil" etc



Fortunatly "Goldfish" and most cheese curls don't have it! Although we eat alot of farm fresh vegetables with 2 preschoolers I need those take along snacks for when we are on the go.
We are also staying away from high fructose corn syrup and that is even harder to do ( did you know even most canned tomato and spagetti sauces have it. Also so called healthy cereals have it! It is ridicuous how many products have it!

Me and my husband have both lost weight and went down one clothes size since we dropped these two things and added more whole grains to our diet.

It's the fat that's hydrogenated (semi-solid at room temps.). Most of your stuff may not "have" it in it according to the labels because I don't think it's a law for them to list trans fats (or it's a recent requirement if it is).
