DH and I are needing to get Health Insurance. We are self-employed ranchers. We are going to be looking for a family policy or whatever they want to call it so that DD can be covered on it also. Since she carries her share of the weight around here, she could be considered an employee I guess, if we got a business type policy.
I just don't know. We are trying to figure this out. So my question is:
Does anyone have a health insurance policy that isn't through their work or college/university or medicare/medicaid?

We need to purchase our own policy but I wanted to see who had coverage with "what companies" so I could get the real info on whether or not the propaganda they send you when you are requesting info is true or not. It costs too much to go with a company THEN find out they are terrible at paying claims or their customer service is non-existent, etc.

Please share your info with us so we can make a good decision.
Thank you,
Cindy

Blue Cross and Blue Shields is all we have had for years as self insured farmers. It is one of the best coverages you will find. We have been more than pleased with it.

Diana, thanks for the update. I really only want it to be sure if something bad happened we would be covered. DH pays out of pocket for his ofc visits when he has to go, but we don't go very often, only if we HAVE to.

Mickib, thank you, seems Regence is what we'll probably get.

Cindy I have found the hosp and drs around here are only use to Regence / Blue Shield I have had others but have come back to them I HATE it but they are it seems the only one In our neck of the woods.
Personal health ins rates go up every time we use it so I have taken to paying out of pocket for the most of it so that they don't know what I am doing. I just had the annual and the Mamogram and I paid out of pocket and the blood work was sent in as a claim from Clearwater Clinic and I know that With the marginal high colesterol my rates will go up.

I own my own company so it is also higher.. I pay tooooooooooooooo much for the insurance but feel the need to have it in the event of the catastrophic illness.
I tried looking for ins on the internet and I got A ton of calls so just beware.

I know I'm getting to this late Cindy, but we have individual coverage in Idaho through Regence BlueShield. You might want to look at their website.

We had to get Personal Health Insurance when my Husband was working in Russia. He had BUPA with his company but they wouldn't cover us. I covered myself and three daughters, one I paid extra for because she is heavy and I paid $475. a month for BCBS of Texas. It covered just like any company insurance. We are now paying the same amount for Cobra because my husband got laid off from the job he got after Russia became to dangerous for him. And the insurance isn't as good as the BCBS we got personally.

Cindy,
My husband is self-employed and gets his insurance through a company that deals specifically with the self-employed. Email me privately is you would like information about them.

I just tried to submit a reply and it didn't go through......UGH...... It was so informational, detailed and eloquent in explaining all my experiences and opinions. It was probably a whole page long....my masterpiece is gone. ha ha

Maybe that's a good thing....because my fingers are tired and I am now just gonna give the bullet points which will save you all the reading of my rambling.

Currently with BlueCross BlueShield of Texas at around $200 per month for a family of 4. Self-pay on visits and scrips. The coverage is basically a catastrophic type policy.

Prior to this we were with a Christian medical sharing group. These are cool...you send your "premium" to a specified family. When you have bills, you submit them in and then people share with you. It is not insurance and when receiving care you cannot list them as coverage.

We did this for years until my daughter was trampled by a horse and I had to tell the ambulance and the emergency room that we had no insurance. There was no way that I wanted my daughter to recieve less than adequate care due to lack of insurance. So, although I believe in the benefits of the medical sharing, I just needed something more.

HSA's are a cool option....part of what you pay goes into a "savings" account to be used for dr. visits, etc... Just remember that you can save that money yourself and earn interest on it instead of the big company earning interest on it. But, you also know the money is there in the health account if you need it.

Start with an internet search like "esurance". You'll get an immediate comparison of companies, coverages and premiums. You'll also get a good idea of what's standard. Then you can decide if you want options like do-pays, etc... The more you self-pay the less your premium will be.

Well, I guess I still rambled.

One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt."
