Does anyone have information about kidney infections? My 24 year old daughter is one her third one in 8 months. Her doctor just keeps giving her antibiotics . I'd like to help her prevent them, in the first place! What causes these? Does anyone know if any particular foods or herbs help prevent them?

With my kidney infections, I had a bunch in a row like that too, (and I think what was really happening was that I had a weird bug and it never got cleared up and it just kept coming back) I know I wasn't drinking enough, I thought I was, but I need like a gallon of water a day. Another thing is with sex, I shower before and after. I have one of the hand held shower heads, I rinse and rinse the privates. All of the other stuff is good too.
Make sure they do a sensitive culture so they know which bug to fight.

Something to note that many people might overlook.

Cranberry juice makes the walls of the bladder slick so bacteria can't stick. Don't bother with the cocktails in regular stores since they are all sugar and watered down.

Look for Knudsen brand 100% juice or some other brand that is more of what you need rather than watered down filler.

When I feel either a kidney or bladder infection coming on I start taking cranberry capsules. They're concentrated cranberry. I get them from Wal Mart. They've saved me from having to go on antibiotics many times. I hope she's feeling better quickly. I think these infections are just awful!

Well I'm not quite sure what could be causing this. But with all those antibiotics I would have her taking some cultures either by eating yogurt or taking lactobicillus acidopholuis (spell?) suppliments. I agree with the others about the drinking a whole lot of liquids - Cranberry juice and may be some cleansing teas like may be some herbs like Red Clover or Burdock or Dandilion. Now nutrionaly speaking protien is pretty hard on the kidneys it might help a little to stay away from a lot of protien. Not that this is the cause, but it would give them a break and they could focus on healing. Of course it would be good to stay away from alot of salt. I can't help but think that the antibiotics might hurt more than help. I know an ear infection is a whole different thing but I heard of many cases where the antibiotics were causing more infections by lowering the bodies defences. They could be turning a bladder infection into a cronic baldder infection...Just a thought. I'll think more on this and look to my books and see what they have to say on the matter.

Thanks, everyone! I've sent your messages on to my daughter and I'll see what she says. We're going shopping on Tuesday for her wedding dress, so I'll be able to find out how she's doing.

Kidney infections are definitely different than bladder infections but even three bladder infections in 8 months needs to be investigated further. If you (or she) haven't done so already, request a referral to a urologist where all of the proper tests should be done. Proper hydration is important for everybody especially people prone to kidney and bladder infections and stones. Our rule of thumb for stone patients is to drink enough fluid to put out at least 2 quarts of urine a day(more is better).

Marlene-sorry to hear about your daughter. I have had reoccuring kidney infections for about 7 years now. When they first started happening, they gave me antibiotics, too. Then they did a lot of tests to rule out both disease and anatomical problems but found nothing. The infections come on fast--all of a sudden I have stabbing pains in my back (usually on the left side) when I try to urinate. I even ended up in the hospital when I was pregnant with my first child because the infection can be dangerous. I still get the infections but I don't take antibiotics anymore. I just deal with them by drinking water and getting more rest if I can. I believe stress makes them worse. You definately want to have her go through the tests.

Is the infection occuring in the same kidney each time? You may want to request an ultrasound or a dye test for a stone that is causing irritation and infection. Kidney stones can be very tricky.

Get her to drink lots and lots and lots of water. Hydration is very important. And kidney infections are different than bladder infections. Water is more important than cranberry juice.

Definitely get aggressive with finding out why the infection comes back. It could be important.

Cotton underware, NOT tight jeans and all those fancy under garments for everyday, also agree with the bath thing, I have not taken a bath in years because of infection. wash all undergarments in hot water, a little bleach in the wash is good. that would be on white cotton underware. and as above no perfumes or deodorant, and of course shower everyday, drink lots and lots of water. I also found that some foods can trigger an attack, in my case chocolate for some reason seems to be a factor. I do know for sure that nylon and spandex garments are not good for me, and I don't mean girdles, just the elastic on the legs of underware. Its an on going thing to figure out what brings them on, but I have been pretty much free of them because of these changes. Hope at least some of these ideas help.

I went through this with my daughter when she was younger. Drinking lots of fluids, particularly acidic ones helps..ie. the good ole standby cranberry juice. I was also told not to use colored toilet paper and that one of the main causes was baths with additives, like bubble baths, bath oils, etc.
