She's 8. She's had a fever since Sunday morning. Cough, achy body etc. Extremely congested. Dr. told us to treat her at home. Tuesday she had red rings around her eyes & nose. She just looked miserable. I called the Dr. to get her in. I thought she had a nasal infection. They're not even testing for H1N1 here anymore - 95% of all flu tests were showing that H1N1 was present. Since she had already been sick for a few days the Dr. could not give the Tamiflu - she also says she doesn't like to give it too much because sometimes the side effects are worse than the flu symptoms.

She did remark that dd looked good considering she was so sick. She's well hydrated and her lungs are clear. We're to keep doing what we're doing.

We did not get flu shots for our children. My husband & I have been on the fence about it. We've never gotten flu shots for them in the past. It's been so hard to decide. What we have been doing is keeping our girls well hydrated - they drink lots of water. Eating whole foods. Getting lots of sleep. Us girls drink smoothies every morning. They consist of fresh fruit - at least 4 servings in each smoothie, Greek yogurt(or Kefir) (probiotics!) flax seed, wheat germ and honey. Lunches also include (most of the time) another serving of yogurt, a healthy lunch and a fruit. Dinner - lots of veggies, whole grains & a protein.

Now, these practices obviously did not prevent my child from getting sick - but she does have a healthy immune system and it is allowing her to heal without the intervention of meds. I'm not saying that this is for everyone. Please see your doctor if you or your child gets sick.

My children also do not have any underlying health issues. If they did - that would be a whole 'nother story!

On Mary Janes website- the Mary Janes Farm.org site I found a recipe for elderberry syrup.

I have another group site, it belongs to me but the members are all natural health practitioners and the program we are following is elderberry capsules daily, D3 and probiotics at bedtime, silver gel swabbed in the nostrils daily.

So far so good.

Thanks for posting that link for the elderberry syrup to make at home. I've often wondered if it was possible to make my own because you're right, it's expensive to buy. I usually just drink elderberry tea, but I drink LOTS of kinds of tea (for this n' that!) and to tell you the dyin' truth I'm kinda sick of tea.

This will be great and I really like Mt. Rose Herbs stuff. I'm not their best customer, but I have ordered several things from them over the years.

P.S. Oops - forgot to say that I'm glad your little girl is better, Deb. I always love it when you can send them back to school because that means they're on the mend.

I made my own elderberry syrup from a link someone gave here. It was very simple & made the house smell wonderful. I got the dried berries from Mountain Rose Herbs (along with a few other items, since their shipping is a little steep), but still the berries were about 10 bucks & that is enough for a few batches, compared to the syrup in stores is over 25 for a small bottle. Here is the link

My daughter is much better now. As of Friday -13th. Her fever broke. She did return to school on the 16th.

Thanks for the heads up on the elderberry. I'm on the lookout for it. I may head to the health food store for it today.

Please, remember that National Institutes of Health studies have proven Elderberry to prevent H1N1. In lab tests it was as effective as Tamiflu at stopping replication but it is also a preventative. I am on it for the flu season. You can buy elderberry syrup for little ones.

I hope your little one is well soon. It's so hard to know about the flu shots. I didn't get one and I had the H1N1 as well.

Deb, I'm so sorry your daughter is ill. Our niece and nephew (4 and 3) just got over it. They were very sick for about 48 hours, but they were able to take tamiflu and that helped immensely. They did, however, feel fairly sick from the tamiflu, itself. My sil and bil didn't get it, either, thankfully.

Because of her age (under a year), Violet has had both her regular flu and her h1n1 vaccines per our pediatrician's recommendation. So far (knock on wood), she's just fine--even after seeing her counsins a few days after they were diagnosed!

It is so scary when a child gets sick, especially if she's your child. One always wonders if I did is or that would it of helped? I'm glad my children are growen and they have to make the choice to get a shot or not. I heard everyone should get it as it helps the immune system stay healthy. I had to get the flu shot for my 30+ working years and got sick from it every time. I have been retired for 3 yr's and have not taken a flu shot and have been healthy for the past 3 years (knock on wood) I pray your daughter gets well soon.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

Deb, so sorry your little one is so sick. It's awful to have to go through that, especially so young. I hope she feels better real soon. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. Good food is the best thing for them. And plenty of rest, too.

My granddaughter is 6 and in 1st grade. When she started school I went to our local HFS and got Insure. It's an immune builder. She took 2 bottles of that. You just mix a little with water. Then I found a different kind that had more in it for a few dollars more called Kid's Immune Protect. It's 2 oz. Taken the same way. But she has not even had sniffles so far. I started taking the elderberry syrup myself after I got so sick. But then someone told me not to take it every day. Just if I feel like I'm getting something. Anyway, you might want to invest in the kid's immune builder. Just for a back up plan.

Aww Deb, I'm sorry your daughter is sick. :(
Our oldest daughter took her oldest and youngest in yesterday to the doctor. Emma, the oldest had been sick since Saturday, Gracie got sick on Monday night. My daughter on Sunday. Isabelle (middle daughter) actually started it all last Wednesday! Isabelle is fine, but Emma has pneumonia and Gracie has pink eye and ear infections. Their doctor told my daughter that they are no longer testing around here, but that she was 99 % positive it was H1N1. There is also pink eye going around here, so Gracie got a double whammy.
My daughter who is pregnant actually had the seasonal flu shot a month ago, but was not able to get the H1N1 immunization in time. She found that lots and lots of hot tea really helped while she was feeling the worse.
DH and I have been taking extra Vitamin D (2,000 IU/day) since about the beginning of September. So far, I have been exposed directly (no touching, just in the same room) to this- that I know of! 3 times. I am hoping maybe I won't get as sick when I do get it, I guess we'll see!
It sounds like she will be doing fine. Dehydration and pneumonia are the biggest worries from this flu, so keep her drinking! :)
