As of today our family is going off of soda. Doug and I both drink way to much and we don't want Nora growing up with this ridiculous volume of soda. I don't want our bad habits to rub off on her. Right now her drink of choice is water, then milk, then juice. Soda doesn't even really register unless she sees us drinking it.

So this morning I started the day with a cup of hot water with two teaspoons each of apple cider vinegar and honey. I did this because of a sinus issue but I did notice it really was a pick me up and I am not craving soda yet. I have been up for over 3 hours and normally I would have had 1 or 2 sodas by now. So I am hoping this really helps!

I agree with deb on the diet soda. It's way better to drink the real thing than to drink the diet stuff. They put so much stuff in the diet sodas to make it taste the same as the real soda.

Please, please, please ----- DON'T drink diet soda. If you hafta drink soda (and I do occasionally drink an ice cold Coke) please drink the real thing, not the diet stuff. Aspartame is a potent, potent neurotoxin not to mention all the other things wrong with any artificial sweetner. Remember artificial means "man made". It doesn't mean it takes the place of some other natural substance.

It's been a couple of weeks for me now. I've been really hitting the water. I did make a big jug of sweet tea once. Didn't really do the trick so I went back to water. Once or twice I had a cranberry ginger ale or something like that, dh has a 12 pack in the basement that no one really cares for. Not bad, nice when you're craving something sweet.

I have had 2 diet pepsi's in the past couple of weeks, but haven't gone out and bought any. My joints feel pretty good. I wonder if it's a combination of my workouts and the diet soda diet. I don't know.

My 21 year old son stopped drinking soda and lost 25 pounds in a year! You can adjust your taste to anything. (you did for soda, if you think about it!) If it's something cold you are after, and a little caffine, get used to unsweetened iced tea. You can do it! Melody

In the past, I did not drink much soda, but this summer, I started drinking a Dr. Pepper a day, pretty much. I needed the caffeine, with such a busy schedule. But I hate what it does to my body even though I LOVE the taste.

I have not had soda for almost two weeks. And I know I can live without it. But I do love an ice cold soda after a hard day's work.

(And I guess bringing home a 12 pack of soda when you are stressed is better than a 12 pack of beer. ;) )

Doing pretty good, but must admit I still have one or two sodas a day. Coming out of midterms and classes are already ramping up for finals so I am swamped with studying and am using the caffeine to burn my candle at both ends! I am soooo looking forward to winter break!

I remember reading somewhere years ago (the guys at the music store I worked at..rock band guys) were discussing it..Mt Dew effects the male sex drive & ability..& not in a good way. Don't know if it is true or not. but the guys I worked with quickly switched to another brand.
Can't have a rock star not be a sex toy now can we??(HA)
Maybe that could help convince Doug. HHHAAAHHAA

Thanks Jessie!

Doug had a bad day yesterday. A childhood family friend (his dad's age) died. So what did he do? He went and bought a 12 pack of Mt. Dew. Darn it. My will power right now is not THAT good. So I am slowly sipping ONE but then I will not drink any more. But one is still a lot better than the six or more I drank some other days. Just the thought of guzzling the MT. Dew is repulsing me so I know I am making mental progress!

Alee- That is wonderful. I wish I had that will power. Soda is a wicked addiction for me. I drink close to a 2 liter every two days. I have tried and tried to give it up for all of the obvious reasons, but just can't. Bad bad addiciton!
Keep up the good work!!
P.S. My kids don't get to drink soda if I can help it. :) It's definitely a bad habit to let Nora start. You are such a good Mom!

I bought a bottle of soda today, but only drank about a quarter of it (so what is that- 5 ounces?) So I am feeling pretty good about that now! :D

When I gave it up it was by accident!

I was starting Richard Simmons plan, and he kept saying you need so much water a day to help your body lose weight. I loved soda so much (my parents had even given it to me in bottles! when I was a baby! UHG!) I really had no plans of giving it up. But, I hated water so much, I made a pact with myself, I could only drink soda, AFTER I had had a full glass of water with each meal. (that way I was getting 3-20 oz glasses of water a day. Well, as time went on, I kept drinking the water at meal times and allowing myself the soda afterwards.....but as time went on..I wanted the soda less and less after the water. Till one day, I just didn't want it. So I didn't get it..and time went on and on and I still didn't want it. Then we were at a restaurant where I didn't like the water (they had bad tasting water), and they had no lemon which is what I usually added it the water tasted bad and it helped. So I went ahead and ordered a soda, even though I would of rather had water. And ick it was like syrup, I couldn't finish more then a sip or two, then I couldn't take any more! It was terrible.

So...I'm on board for let it go slowly.

Like I said, I gave it up totally by accident. I NEVER had intentions of giving it up at all!

Thanks Deb! I didn't drink any soda yesterday and had a bit of a headache in the afternoon, so I took some excedrin. It has some caffiene in it and drank tons of water. I am hoping to get through today without caffiene or soda!!

Good for you Alee!

I drank my last diet pepsi 2 days ago - my drug of choice. I had been complaining of joint pain. My dh talked to a friend at work who mentioned his joint pain ended when he stopped drinking diet soda. Dh asked me to give it a try to see if it would help.

Only time will tell. I also just read in Prevention Mag. that drinking just diet soda list linked to increased belly fat which in turn puts you at a high risk of heart disease. (I do have a pouch) I'm hoping I can lose it easier now.

Anyhow - keep up the great work!

Hi Alee, I know it's really hard to take a 14 year olds addvice but I would not go cold turkey at first. I know its hard because you just want to jump in, but if you want to be kind to your body than please do not go cold turkey. The first thing I would do is maybe just have one a day instead of however many you were already drinking. I would try that for a week and see how you feel. Than I would slowly stop drinking it. Maybe just drink half instead of the hole thing. You get the picture. I'm speaking from experience here belive me. I hope this all makes since. If you go cold turkey it can cause more problems than you think. Hope this helps!

So I am doing pretty good. I had a soda at dinner because my dad took us out for hubby's birthday. But compared to how much I normally drink- it wasn't that much. Tomorrow is probably when I am going to feel it worst and then it should get better from there!

You'll probably loose a few pounds just being off the soda. Hope all goes well.

I quit this year too. I feel so much better, and actually lost weight. Once in a while I have a coke or root beer float or something like that; but just one, and only once in a while.

Yeah I gave it up a long time ago, now it doesn't even taste good to me.

The thing with children is though........we don't drink soda here! hahaha My daughter mainly drinks milk, then water, then once in a great great while juice.

Well, she had never had soda till August this year (she turned three in Sept). Any way...we were at my dad's and she innocently went up to my brother and said can I have some soda. And he said yes and gave it to her. OMG! It was hilarious! I wasn't paying attention (the she had asked and he had given!) till she started doing this jumping dance, screaming soda, soda, soda, soda! lol It went on for a minute or so! Every one was like, omg what happened. My brother was like I don't know I just gave her a sip of soda! hahaha I said, um she's never had it before. hahaha My brother felt so bad! I wasn't mad or upset, I knew sooner or later she would get it in life. But soda is a HUGE addiction of my fathers, and used to be of mine. So I didn't want her to get the addiction. lol Any way it made for some really entertaining seconds! hahahaha

Alee, I've done the same thing over this summer. Once in a while I gotta have a rootbeer float, other than that I kicked the soda habit as well. I've been making sun tea ( usually decaf or green ) adding just a little sugar ( 1/3 cup to a gallon jar ) and that has helped a bunch. Good for you & good luck!

Good for you, Alee! I drink a good ole' Coke about 1 time a month, usually with pizza, but sometimes it just sounds good. You'll be surprised how much weight you drop without the soda in the house!

The vinegar and any acid is hard on your teeth, so brush them after. Since you were having some tooth problems, you dont ant to make it worse.

I rarely drink soda. I drink water mostly. The acid is bad for my tummy. Once you get over the habit it not bad. WHen I crave fizzy drinks I put juice into soda water.
