Nora and I went to the doctor today. It took them over 2 hours to get us back into an exam room and we spent a total of 3 1/2 hours there! Yikes!

I've been coughing and am really congested. Luckily I didn't pass the Strep Test, but I do have some sort of bacterial infection. Yuck.

So in addition to what the doctor gave me I have been putting more humidity into the air and I created a steam treatment with lavender and peppermint essential oils. (Note to self next time go easier on the mint!!)

Anyone else have some easy homemade remedies to loosen chest congestion.

Yea.

I spent 2 days of hell coming off sunus sprays. Went cold turkey and didn't sleep for 2 days.

Someone suggested saline sprays. Use these everytime I blow my nose or sneeze. That and staying really active outside. Some kind of vigorous activity like raking leaves at least helped me breathe during the day.

I tried the neti pot and it made it worse...or at that point I was already so plugged anyway.

A riend had this a week before you and I did and he is still blowing his nose!

Hang in there.

I don't know but I woke up this morning to more crud in my sinuses- of course. So back to the colloidal silver, neti pot and apple cider vinegar/honey/hot water treatments. The apple cider vinegar (braggs) treatment seems to be the most effective and really does wake me up.

Thanks!

Lets hope we have each done our time and won't be sick again for a long while!

Luckily through this whole thing I had already been scheduled off from work for 10 days, so the extra sleep was good,,,,that is those nights when I actually could sleep!

Was able to crash last night w/o the aid of any drugs whatsoever, so I think we are on the mend.

Why do these things last so long ???

And hubby is still healthy, so my handwashing has helped protect him.

So Alee

Are you stll sick?

My voice has been a slight squeak for the past 2 days and first thing in the a.m. I am blowing out all kinds of gross things

It's celar during the day but at night I start couging and can breathe out of 1 nostril

Made the mistake of over dosing on nose spray could bt why this has lingerd far too long

Waht happendd to your cold
Alee Posted - Oct 16 2009 : 07:16:06 AM
Yup, Anna- coughing up all sorts of nasty things here too. Yuck. And even using hankies my nose is so chapped from blowing all the time. I didn't catch it in enough time to prevent chapping with some of my body balm and so I went to go get some and realized I was out! Darn and I don't have the energy to make more right now. Oh well.

I am doing the Braggs AC Vinegar, honey, and water a couple times a day. That seems to really be helping with the the throat crud. I also bought some collodial silver water last night and husband and I both are using it since he seems to have gotten this crud too. Darn.

Sounds like we have the same thing

I have all kinds of dried herbs on hand and also make herbal teas.

Soo good w/ the honey.

Forgot completely about the whiskey thing. But glad the funky throat thing is mostly past.

I also have the bad congetstion and an hacking up all kins of gross things. Better to cough it out.

Sometimes wish I had a sweat lodge to sweat it all out. Although the other night I think this happaned anyway when we thought it was going to be much cooler, so we piled on the balnkets, and i woke up with sweat literally rolling down my forehead.

Easy on the peppermint I agree! Same for eucalyptus.

I tried dabbing some Tiger Balm around my nose and throat....BIG mistake!

Think eating the peppers is a far tastier and less painful solution here.

Hope you guys are back on your feets quickly

At least it's not the flu!

Thanks ladies. I am going to go steam myself for the third time today. I think it does help even if it makes me cough more in the short term.

Oh Alee and Nora, I hope that you both feel better real quick!
Horehound is/was a standard for coughs in olden days and also ginger tea, honey & lemon for the throat always makes mine feel better when I have a sore one.
Sending good thoughts and get-better wishes to you both

When I was growing up, we lived in Mexico for several years. My mom would sautee jalapenos, garlic and tomatoes together to add to the food. She swore it would cure a cold. Garlic is good for just about everything!! And I have to admit, this has worked for our family in the past.

Well, hope you feel better soon Alee and Alee-ette (Nora, just messing with ya). My father had a cure-all recipe for the creeping crud that had rock candy, lemon juice and the shot of whiskey-it always seemed to help. Lots and lots of liquids is the ticket.Thinking of you.

Hope you're better today, Alee. That hot toddy thing was a staple for an elderly relative of mine. She swore by it and she lived to the ripe old age of 98. She made her own lye soap and once 'slipped' a hundred rose bushes and 95 of them lived. She was a farm girl in the city for sure!

Jennifer- that shot of whiskey is starting to sound good about now! LOL I remember one time I was pretty sick and we had a Mikes Hard Lemonade in the fridge. Now I am not normally a drinker. I might have 2-3 drinks in a whole year. But that Hard Lemonade sounded SO good. I just had to have it. So I did and I actually felt better than the cold medicine had made me feel! I felt human for a good couple of hours!

Not that I have tried it (heehee) but, the oldtimers say that nothing works better for a cold than a shot of good whiskey! Hope you are on the mend real soon!

Warm cup of water with 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar...several times a day...Drinking A LOT of warm liquids..I also make chicken broth, boiling 5 cloves of garlic in it and let it sit. Then enjoy..sounds nuts but it works.

Sound like you are doing the right thing. I do the steam treatment too. I did it once when my mom was gone and put tons of peppermint in it and took one wiff and thought I was going to die!!! I'll never do that again!
The other thing I do is drink lots and lots of peppermint tea and herbal teas. It really helps. Oh, and don't eat or drink milk and cheese for a while because that can really make it worse. Hope this helps!!
