So I was listening to a little local talk radio this a.m. and the topic was of course health care.

The zoo I work for is run by the state so we get Blue Cross/Blue Shield

With all the cuts and stuff going on here recenlty, it sounds like they may start to crack down on smokers and the obese and raise their premiums.

YIKES!

Also not too keen on a proposed tax on soda.

I hear there already is one in New York??

Yea, kind of ironic when the hospital doesn't even provide a wellness center!

That just 'ain't right!

Same can be said for nursing homes with very little stimuli and decent programming.

Yes, it's so important to offer incentives if people are going to try to change their behavior. That's what bugs me about all this healthcare talk--I believe everyone should have access to good healthcare, but they need an incentive to get healthy and stay healthy. Otherwise it's like you're punishing them for being out of shape. People often have to be pushed to exercise more, but once you cross a certain line, it becomes second nature. You get upset when you CAN'T exercise. Slinging rhino poop sounds like it gives you a good aerobic workout (do I see a DVD in this? LOL). Positive reinforcement really does work. Too many employers have this attitude (I saw this on a church sign):The smitings will continue until morale improves. OK, now I'll shut-up.

That's the things. Rather than punnishing, why not make an incentive in the positive direction for those who WANT to quit or exercise or whatever.

I kind of wish someone would donate $$ and instead of animal stuff, allocate it for a heath and fintness center there on the property.

That way instead of running off grounds for lunch all the time, i thnk most of us would stay there , save a buck or two on gas, and actually improve our well being.

I used to smoke and constantly fight weight issues. I am genetically programmed to be 5 feet and round. Luckily my grandmother's example keeps me up and busy most days, and thankfully, slinging rhino poop every day keeps a body trim that way. But if I even slow doen for a minute, it creeps up and FAST

I work in the healthcare field, and my employer has already raised insurance rates for smokers. (I don't smoke). Lots of people I know have quit rather than pay the higher rates. They were given lots of incentives to quit as well. As for raising rates on the overweight--that would include probably 80-90% of my co-workers (me included). I try to walk a mile or so on my break. I wish the hospital had a place to exercise indoors for employees, especially with cold weather coming up. If they raised my rates because of my weight, I'd lose it in a hurry.
