I've gone to doctors about menopause and about all that happens is that I don't get much info and then a bill to boot. I kind of figger now that my body knew what to do when I was pregnant and will probably know what to do now, menopause-wise.

However, I just need to know. I didn't have a period for a couple of months and now it's like a stuck pig. Can barely leave the house. I don't feel roller-coaster-ish though, emotionally. I feel fine there. Matter of fact, I was surprised when my period started. Just a teensy bit and then Niagara Falls.

I get some sort of hot-flash but it's over pretty quickly seems like. My skin has changed, gotten drier and seems like thinner. My libido has actually picked up but in between times, definitely not interested.

My energy level ebbs and flows as does my aches and pains. It's either an 8 or a 2 on a scale of 1-10. No in-between. Sometimes I hurt so badly I can't sleep and other times I'm free as a bird. So much energy or can barely move.

I do have a bit of insomnia but go back to bed and sleep soundly. Also, my tummy now can't stand grapes (??!!). Certain things, I can't eat, even though I've eaten them all my life.

So, does everything sound sort of normal?? I have herbs but can't take them regularly, only when some symptom presents itself.

Advice??

Winona

Michele, Yup, it feels good that others are here to give advice or to lean on. I don't really want to go to the doc just to be told it's normal and then a big bill. So far, everything is doing fine, hot/cold, antsy/lazy, the works. I think I'm normal.

Oh, and now I can't eat almonds....ham wigs me out too....

I agree with renee.
Anything by Christiane Northrup is great advice.
Hang in there.
Does it make you feel better that you've gotten so many responses from those of us in the same club?

I would not get all excited thinking you have fibroid tumors as most of your symptoms sound fairly normal. An iron deficiency can cause heavy periods as well. I dealt with them during the beginning of menopause. I was always a regular cycle person but when it started I was 38 and it was anything but regular. Took me 8 years before I was completely through the cycles. Of the hot flashes are still around but I notice they come in certain cycles of the month now. I read a very good book called What your doctor may not tell you about Menopause" it was very helpful to me and the suggestions given by Dr. John Lee in the book really got me through the hot flashes and ups and downs.
I really looked at it as a new season of life. AND I enjoy this new time in my life.

God is good....all the time.

So if "the change" is normal.........whay are all these fibroid tumors turning up and resulting in hysterectomies??

That's kind of troubling.

The Wisdom of Menopause by Christiane Northrup, MD is a very helpful book. I learned a lot of what my mind and body is going through.

Ok, update here...

I haven't been to the Dr. because I just haven't gone. Not a good excuse but my 2 'period's since I posted have been far more normal. I feel better but my emotions are out of whack now. The news on the 'net and TV just sends me almost into depression so I've quit listening to how *****ed up our world is and now watch old time feel-good movies on the oldies channel.

Talking to my kids makes me feel better but the feeling doesn't last and, honestly, I can't keep my kids on the phone for 6 hrs at a time, now can I?? :-)

Haven't been able to find a job, which has never happened to me in my life. I'm not sure if it's my age or if it's really the job market. I read where the temp. agencies don't like to send older people out on jobs and prefer the 'beautiful' people. Even driving a truck has proven to be way harder than I thought. That's never happened before either. Sort of shaken me to my boots!

Then, just in the past few days, bath powder that I've used for years now irritates my skin and I have a rash sort of thing going on. So, I'm going to try plain old cornstarch and baking soda. That's the basic ingredient of the bath powder but the bath powder has perfume in it, so I'm thinking that's what's bothering my skin.

Here's something that is REALLY odd, I can't stand ground beef now. Can't look at it or worse, have to touch it. Turns my stomach!! Which is sort of bad since hubby and I like spaghetti and meatballs. So now I use stew meat instead. But NO ground beef. Can't make tacos either...Go figger!!

I mean, I'll get thru this but Good Honk, what a ride!!

Winona ;-)

No strange symptoms; just one heavy period. I mentioned to my doctor who was smart enough to do a blood count test, then an ultrasound. Hugh fibroids which could have easily turned malignant. Complete hysterectomy. Please get checked out and demand bloodwork and ultrasound. See a gyno, not a regular M.D.

Jennifer, I have tried some of the Aveno lotions but not Overnight relief cream. I will check that one out also! Thanks :)

Fibroid tumors.......yup.......me too! Same symptoms. Although I have to admit I was eager to have everything out as in, been there, done that, let's move on.

Don't wait to be checked out.

Cheryl.. try Aveno lotions they have all kinds and they seem to work great for me. There is one in a tube called Intense Relief Overnight Cream. I use it before bed on those rough cracked heals, elbows and my hands. There are others in pumps that work great everywhere on the body. Hope this helps.

Warm Wishes

Last year someone recommended Gold Bond lotion, not the original smelly stuff, this is in a pump bottle, there are two kinds, I don't remember which one I had (need more or I'd read the bottle), but they are both white bottles, with a pump as I said, and that lotion is absolutely awesome. Give it a try!! I've had dry skin for years, esp. my hands as I did 29 years in perm solution, water, color, etc. just be consistant with it.

Winona, I am with Gena on this one... especially when you used the term Niagara Falls!
I myself used that term! One day it is the falls.. then barely nothing for the rest of few days. I had complained this to a doctor for four years (not OB/GYN)! I had an ultra sound done, I had football size fibrous tumors... I too had to have a complete hysterectomy. Please at least rule that out. I am nearing my 50th B'day and had this done two years ago... I feel great except for the hot flashes and living in Georgia with their humidity... blehhhhhhhh! LOL

Oh! I didn't mean to freak anyone, if I did... just be sure and take care of yourself... it is THAT important!

Winona, Be sure to see your Gyn if you continue to have a heavy period. I had went in Jan to see mine and all was well then. Well about the first of June the same thing happened to me that is happening to you. I went to the Gyn again, and in that short period of time, things and really changed. She did an internal and said my uterus was the size of someone pregnant. I had to immediately have a complete hysterectomy. Don't brush it off as normal.

I am with Teresa on this one... Welcome to the dark side LOL!!!!

ok, not really dark, just playing with you.

I found that changing my diet a little, taking more minerals helps a lot...Oddly enough I love some of the mainstream celebraty authors who talk on this topic... go to the local library and get some of Suzanne Somers books ( ageless is awesome), also Ann Lousie Gittleman ( I think it is called Hot-flash) and then of course Robin McGraw. If you want to buy one book~ the all time favorite women's bible in my opionion is ANYTHING by Dr. Christina Northrup ~ She gets a bad wrap from those that arent into eastern medicines or philospophies~ but truthfully her science is amazing and so informative. Her book women's wisdom is awesome.

Hope those help a little.
