I woke up today with my right eye hurting which continued all day until it began hurting into my temple. So I took two Excedrin PM about an hour ago. Which led to restless legs. And now I can't hardly keep my eyes open at 10:15, yet I can't quit moving my legs, they ache so much! I'm prone to RLS anyway, but this is absolute misery! I've downed a mug of warm milk with a bit of almond extract and raw sugar mixed in, but still no relief! Didn't I see a thread on here somewhere about RLS? Anyone else suffer horribly from it?

PS My oh so sweet DD offered to pluck out the offending eye if it would stop my whining! Isn't she simply precious?

I have RLS badly. Mine is caused from my anemia. If I take some iron it helps. I also take Natural Calm which is primarily magnesium. Most nights I take an epsom salt bath which may help a little.

Blessings!

my aunt had RLS and the first time she stayed at my grandfather's house it started a scandal because of all the noise coming out of the bedroom. she still gets it from time to time but as she's changed her diet it has improved alot.

I took Requip, 1 mg tablets to relieve the symptoms of RLS, but it is a very dangerous drug, also used to treat Parkinson's disease. I have recently found a product at the health food store called "Restful Legs" that has given me a great deal of relief from the jumping, twitching and creepy-crawly feelings.

I have an amazing massage therapist that has been doing some RLS work on a couple of clients. They've reported great relief. Maybe you could ask around to see if there are massage therapists in your area who are treating RLS.

Chris, that's very interesting because I've always been slightly iron deficient. When I was a teenager, my daddy would pull down my lower eye, take a long look, and tuttt, tuttt me and tell me if I didn't watch it, he'd make me eat liver! Seems anemic people have a pale "inside" under eye area. (Does that make sense?) As a result, I've never even tried liver, I was threatened with it so much! So, I'd start popping my vitamins.

Kris, I missed your post when I posted that last time. I'm sure what you experienced with the pain pills is the same feeling. Certain pain pills aggravate mine. I have bursitis in my shoulder and a few months back I had to go to the ER with it because I thought I was having a stroke. When I told them I couldn't take Tylenol or Claritin, they gave me morphine. When I asked them why I needed something so strong, they told me everything less strong had some of the same ingredients as Tylenol. It is the worst feeling I can imagine. I'd rather deal with a sharp, stabbing pain that doubles me up than deal with RLS. Really, the only thing that helped me was the quinine. I could take a pill and in less than 30 minutes, my legs would be fine.

I haven't picked up a bar of ivory yet cause the RLS isn't every night with me and it hasn't bothered me since my first post. And I started walking again today. That helps me, too, if I walk every day. I guess it has something to do with the circulation.

Isn't it strange how so many people suffer from it these days? It's kind of like the increase in autism and ADD and ADHD and fibromyalgia. I bet you dollars to doughnuts it's something in our food or medications that's causing so much of it!

My son says he has RLS too, and he did some reading on the internet and he found that being low in iron
can cause RLS. He started taking supplemental iron and his RLS is gone. Perhaps the cure depends on
the cause of the RLS....apparently it can be caused by a number of things, and apparently medications can
cause it. Perhaps medication caused his iron deficiency? Hope you find something to help it.

Roobis tea has been good for me too. I had read about it years ago and decided to give it a try. There are so many varieties out there and it does help me!! I will try the soap idea too if it gets bad again.

I will definitely try the bar of soap! I hope my little dog, who likes to sleep under the covers at the foot of the bed, won't eat it!

Melody, I can't take Tylenol products either for that very same reason. Or Claritin. Or certain Rx pain meds. It is the acetaminophen that causes it.

Diane, we have quinine in tonic water here, too, but I absolutely can not stomach tonic water! Bleh! If you could find the pills up there, I'd be willing to do what it took to get some!

Thanks everyone for your help!

My husband gets it on occasion...I do sometimes, too. I had it frequently while pregnant but haven't had it in months.

I'm curious about the bar of soap! Just any ole soap? By your feet, just in bed or what? So interesting!

Cherry, I am so sorry you had such a bad night. I hope you have tried the soap since. I'd like to know if it worked for you. I was going to ask if there is any soap in particular. But a few have mentioned Ivory. My hubby get leg cramps so bad sometimes he jumps out of bed and runs around. They hurt so bad sometimes it makes him cry. I wonder if the soap helps the leg cramps, too.

And there was something on the news about Tylenol. Didn't catch the whole thing, though. But I don't think it was good news. I take Motrin when I get a headache or achy muscles.

I just remembered one time I took some kind of sleeping pill because I just could not go to sleep. In about an hour or so I was so sleepy and could hardly hold my eyes open but my legs felt like they could get up and run a marathon. I was miserable for hours after that. I guess that's what RLS feels like? I don't ever want that agian.

I read about the soap bar in the bedding in Dr. Peter Gott's column and for some reason it seems to work. People swear by it and he recommends it often to sufferers of RLS. You can't get much cheaper than a bar of ivory soap.

My husband suffered fron RLS terribly...until we put a bar of ivory soap under the covers at the foot of the bed. He was cured and the funny thing about it is I didn't tell him I had done it until he said something about the RLS going away.I don't know why it works I just know it works.

Yes, Tylenol. Brain doesn't work as fast as the fingers sometimes. LOL
It was the acetaminophen that caused it with her. Her reaction was so severe to it that if she laid down her legs would not just have to move around but would kick straight up in the air. It was awful for her till they figured out what it was.

Melody June, do you mean Tylenol? And if you do, do you happen to know what the active ingredient was that your Mom was to avoid?
My Mom takes a LOT of tylenol, as she has polymyalgic rheumatica for which she must take prednisone so she can't take aspirin products.
Hmmmm...I wonder.
Cabinprincess Posted - Jul 15 2009 : 6:22:11 PM
My mom suffered terribly from RLS until her Dr. found out any Tynol product caused it for her. He said for her to try another brand that did not have the same active ingrediant in it. She did and never had it again. Maybe that would help with you also. If magnesium is supposed to help "Calm" from the health food store might work. I get the packets that you just add to warm water for a relaxing citrus drink.

Cherry:
I had that years ago, about three. Ever since I threw a wrapped bar of soap in the bed with me it quit. I've never had it again. But, a couple of time I just had to get out of bed and run around the house. Just horrible. Some people don't understand about the soap idea, and I was one of them. Finally, I gave it a chance. It works for me.

Yes Cherry, we are both in Canada. I know the tonic water available here has quinine in it, but I don't know if it's available in any other form. I'll look into it and let you know. I could always find a way to send some to you if it's available here. :)

I have heard that valarian root helps and that putting a bar of soap at the end of your bed helps too? Not sure why the soap works- but I have heard people rave about it:

I'll have to try the magnesium, Sharlet. If it's not too bad, I can eat a banana and that seems to help, but I don't have any right now. Diane, the only thing that ever really truly worked for me was Quinine and it worked wonderfully, but the fabulous FDA pulled it from pharmacy shelves and it can't be found now! (Let's pray we don't have an outbreak of malaria!) My doc and I both stewed over that one! I asked him why they pulled it and he said because it's cheap, nevermind that it helped so many people, and so that the Big Dogs could sell their much more expensive RLS drugs that are coming on the market! (Grrr!!)

Thanks for commiserating with me!

There has got to be an answer somewhere for those that suffer from RSL. I (touch wood!) only get it on rare occasions, but my poor Mom suffers from it terribly. She is lucky to literally get 1 hr of sleep at a time before she's up walking to try and make it stop. Most days she's absolutely exhausted from lack of sleep. The only thing the docs have offered her is sedatives or tranquilizers. Surely there has to be something else!

I have it fairly often. I aways get in a hot bath tub and stay there for about thirty minutes. Then I try to go to bed soon after. Magnesuim helps mine too. Hope you get to feeling better soon. There's no way to sleep when its acting up!
