What do you do?
For some reason I tend to attract deer flies and always get bit. I have never been one to have an allergic reaction but I get huge welts and then an hour or two later my joints ache. So far this week I have gotten a dozen bites and one has even left a good size bruise on my arm. I have taken Benadryl but that only helps with the swelling. Any tips?

Do you know if deer flies carry any diseases like Lyme's disease?

I would appreciate any help or advice you could give me. Thanks in advance!

All I can say about this subject is that I would not be without Teatree Oil when I am outside! You can make a small concoction of it by mixing a few drops of Teatrea Oil, same amount of lavender or Essential Rose oil and fill with either Witch Hazel or a carrier oil like Almond in a very small bottle. I like to use a glass bottle instead of plastic...whatever you prefer!

I also make a spray of Teatree oil and Witch Hazel that we use on our deck to stop mosquitoes, flies, deer fleas, etc. Both can be used topically on the skin. And it works great!

Another great hint is to make bundles of whatever herbs you plant and either hang them outside at your door stoop areas or just lay them on the doorstoops as you enter. Deters everything from horseflies to moths!

The vinegar as always worked for me. And for spider bites (the really bad ones) pine tar kills the pain right away and takes the poison out.

Okay,

I just got another one today (only outside for a couple of minutes so I didn't bother wearing long sleeves) Instead of taking Alavert or Benadryl I put a couple of drops of Lavender Essential Oil on a Cotton swab and went over the area. After a couple of minutes it stopped itching and it hasn't swelled :) Just thought I would let you ladies know. I bet it would be helpful with mosquito bites too!

Deer flies - bad bite! I have even gotten one on the beach! They last forever, and get big and so itchy! They even seem to revive themselves when you think they are going away! I use ice, ice, and more ice.

oh my..I have to avoid deer flies in the summer/and hope that I don't get bitten by them... If I see them buzzing around I quickly retreat as I tend to react pretty bad to them.I swell up terribly from them/no joint aches but if they bite me around my ankles I wind up with my foot/ankle swollen up horribly. I think you can use vinegar to help reduce the itch on the bites.
Usually I just soak my leg/the area where I have been bitten with rubbing alcohol, but it usually takes several days for the swelling to go down for me. And I'm not talking little welts either I'm talking whole foot area swells up /it isn't a pretty sight.:0( So glad that it has been several yrs since I've been bitten by one...but I do feel for you.

If you want to purchase something for the deer flies, go to
gemplers.com

This is a gardeners' supply / landscapers catalog, so they have all kidns of stuff for garden and farm.

In the search bar type in deer fly patch

OR you can try to make your own.

Basically it's very sticky tape...think sticky like fly attractants that you place on the back of a baseball hat or other type of hat. The flies buzz around and get stuck on the tape.

It really works.

As for the bites on your skin. Sorry. I know its really painful

I always get hugh welts from these that oftenbruise as well. An ice cube or a paste of baking soda and water can help. I have never heard of them carrying Lymes disease. I believe that is just ticks.
