I was wondering if anyone can help me with a sleep issue. I have alot of things going on just now, DH lost job, DD moving out other DD wrecked car and had surgery and needs more. Started a new job which requires accounting and I have never done it on the computer. Stress is pretty high. I take melatonin/valerian supplements to sleep but I wake up at 4 and then can't go back to sleep. Then am to tired to concentrate learning this new job. I could really use some suggestions. Oh, have tried lavander and hops too. Any one have any suggestions.

Try hypnosis tapes or CDs. I couldn't get back to sleep cause I would lay there and my Mind would not shut off so I found a Stress and insomnia CD I have a small CD player with Ear plugs and when it looks like it will be a long night I turn it on and I get to back to sleep. I stopped smoking this way and then found the stress and insomnia thing and Voila SLEEP YEA

The health food store carries "Calm". I get the box with little packets in it. I was stressed so bad because my husband was in a truck accident. I could not sleep and my nerves were a wreck and I started getting acid reflux. YUK When I told my Dr. he was the one who told me to get it. It is magnesium flavored with citrus and you mix it in warm water and drink it. He said when you get stressed the calcuim does weird things in your body. This helps the bones absorb the calcium and your stress symtoms are releaved. Does not make sense to me but I tried it and I sleep like a baby and the reluxing stopped.

Something else that might help you sleep better is skullcap, an herbal remedy. I just put a few drops under my tongue and it seems to work as a sedative, calming me down and relaxing me without the fogginess that comes from prescription meds. Oh and if you do decide to go with a med, be very careful. Some of those sleep meds can have really wacky side effects. I hope your life calms down soon so you can get some sleep. I know how out of it I get when I don't get enough sleep.

This may sound silly, but when I worked in a large spa, we had sleep rooms. It was very tranquil and dark. We had really nice linens on the bed...super soft. I took some of those ideas and transformed my bedroom at home. Just the thought of sliding into the most comfy, dark, serene room makes me relax and drift off. maybe you should do a little redecorating. Take out the TV, any family pictures. Make it peaceful and inviting. If all else fails, get some liquid Melatonin or the sublingual tablets. Anything that will dissolve underneath your toungue. It will fix you up. I've been doing Melatonin since I got home from Farm Fair (jet lag) and I'm coming around!

Journaling---vent before you go to bed to get it ALL out and organized will help you feel beutter. Taking just a short, casual walk, not watching tv before bed, some nice tea and set up your room for a good snooze- lights down low, bed made and pulled down for the night, pillows fluffed. I find clutter in my bedroom disturbs my sleep.

I always like a nice warm bath. I also find that when I cant sleep I do better if I just get out of bed and do something productive. It might be cleaning the bathroom, paying bills, reading a book, watching a favorite DVD, working on my blog etc. I try to keep the sound low and lights low though. I may not get back to sleep that particular night but feeling productive helps clear the mind and the next night usually goes better. I also try to grab a cup of herbal tea (chamomile is naturally caffine free). It warms me up and helps reduce stress. Often I am feeling sleepy in about an hour and can climb back in bed feeling as if I got something accomplished!

Another thing that helps me is sleeping on a schedule. I try to be in bed by 10 every night. I usually read for another 20 or 30 minutes to help the transition from wake to sleep. Everytime I get off schedual my sleep is disrupted.

a cup of cammomile with honey seems to help me. i used to have a terrible time trying to sleep. it was a combination of so many things. so i stopped the caffine at 6pm, made sure to workout for 30 minutes before 5pm, then make sure to take a shower or bath grab my tea and a book and push everything out of my mind. i usually do about 20 minutes of yoga after work and it seems to help my mind calm down. the problem with sleep issues is that its a cycle and there are so many factors to rule out and try. for me i get night terrors or insomnia when im pmsing which is the only time i seem to not beable to do anything. good luck i hope you find somehting to help ou out.

When I just normally have trouble sleeping, I try warm milk, hot baths, etc.

If it seems to be becoming a pattern, I use melatonin for a bit.

About 8 years ago I was going through a gut-wrenching divorce, and was going on a week of only a few hours of sleep each night. On the advice of a friend who is a pharmacist, I took the regular dosage of benadryl for a few nights-it helped me sleep and after a few nights the "pattern" of not sleeping seemed to break. I wouldn't do this long-term, obviously, but in this situation, it was a life-saver.

Good luck.

You might also try over the counter Benadryl (most any antihistamine will make you sleepy) Reading sometimes helps me to get sleepy. And spending time walking outside helps too. Good luck cause I am an insomniac too.

I was having a problem with not sleeping. I thought it was stress related at first, but it was actually linked to my caffeine intake. Last year I had to switch to decaf tea. A few months back I had to give up coffee. My recent bout with sleeplessness has made me seriously cut back on sodas. I can have one a day as long as I have it before noon.

Hope you get some sleep. It's such an awful feeling when you can't seem to function.

I have a really hard time sleeping. I am lucky, no matter what I do, to get 5 hours sleep. I feel like I have tried alot of things, and none seem to work. I finally have just sort of given up and just try to be productive while I am up...When it gets really bad and I feel like "the walking dead" I take melatonin and it helps some. But I have to take it early..at least 9 hours before I need to be up or I can't get going in the morning either.
I sure hope you find something that works. I am writing down the suggestions you all give.

I go through phases of insomnia and get to a point where I CANNOT function! I've tried so many different things and all have worked at one time or another; a glass of red wine, valarian root, melatonin, warm milk, reading something mindless, etc. I finally broke down and asked my doctor about something. I have a perscription for lorazapam (sp). Yes, it can be habit forming, but a "30 day" perscription lasts me about a year because I only take one after nothing else works. No matter what, though, it's important to not get up and turn a light on because that will fool your system into thinking it's time to wake up and stop the production of melatonin for that day. Good luck, and I FEEL for you!!!!

Hi Beth,

I'm so sorry you are having such a difficult time. A few years ago, when my Dh lost his job, it was a very stressful time. I don't know if you are a woman of faith, but it helped me a lot to pray. If I was having a hard time sleeping, I would get out of bed and listen to CD's of the Bible. It had a very calming and relaxing effect on me. I would pray for peace and sleep would soon follow.

My prayers for you and your family,
Joyce

I glass of warm milk helps me, sometimes. I take Melatonin also, but some times it works, sometimes it doesn't. Good luck. Hope you sleep great tonight.
