A book ANIMAL VEGETABLE MIRACLE, A YEAR OF FOOD LIFE by Barbara Kingsolver(POISONWOOD BIBLE) is a wonderful book I'm listening to and thought I'd tell you all. ( Yes you can get it in real book form, like the kind you read, but I love audio books so I can paint and do my art while I listen.)
All about her family re-locating to a rural Virginia farm and eating local food. Very enlightening.
Check out:
http://www.kingsolver.com/home/index.asp

and if you like audio books Itunes (free download at www.itunes.com) has it on special this month for $9.95 You can listen to it on your computer or transfer it to an ipod or mp3

I just finished reading AVM and loved it! I am trying to be a locavore this upcoming year and beyond. I just started another great book about self-sufficiency called "this organic life" by Joan Dye Gussow. I just started, but it's speaking volumes to me as a home gardner facing the challenges of growing as much as I can to keep overwinter. Another good read is Omnivore's Dilemma. Haven't read it, but it's on my list and comes highly reccomended.

Jonni,
Thank You. I need to work on my web page "about me", it is too hard to read!
I love colour, always have, Love painting horses, cows (I"m a Lancaster, PA native, big Holstein area) Hey, we can arrange a painting on your wall! Or have a custom one done!
You're so lucky to live in Kentucky. My girlfreind is looking for a ranch there. She's had it with the desert of Arizona. I was thru that way a while back and it was soooo green!
Enjoy

Thank you so much for the compliment, Rosemary...and um, WOW, what talents YOU possess!!! I'm awed by your use of color in your paintings...there are many of the paintings of your horses I could see in our home, and the dairy cow--Wonderful. I wanted to read more "about you" in the "about me" section of your page, but I couldn't--the font was too faint or too tiny, so I'm wondering if it's because I'm a pc and not a mac :)

Me too, Rosemary! My Great Grandmother, Theodocia, always had violets on her window sill in the kitchen...I always loved that the white of the enamel sink and countertops and white painted window sills made the purple and green stand out so much in the violets! I too, love to find the ones growing wild in the tall grass (and with all the rain we've had, we have some TALL grass!). I also grow some white ones that Violet's nana gave me when my husband and I first married. She gave them to me as a birthday gift, knowing they were a favorite flower.

I'll have to check out half.com--Janice (missbeehaven) has mentioned it, too, and I didn't look for whatever reason. Since I'm searching for books for Violet's library, I'll check it out for sure.

Jonni,
I'll check out half.com (good place for cheap used books) for the Jane Goodall. I love her and what she stands for.
Violets remnd me of my grandmother who always had beautiful ones on her windowsills, and of coiurse the ones you find in the fields this time of year, and finding yellow and white ones!
You're a wonderful writer.

Thanks, Rosemary--Violets are my favorite flowers (as are Zinnias, as mentioned in my post). I really enjoy writing (and like I said, I have a lot of words...sometimes only I wanna listen :))....
We are VERY lucky with todays weather, I think--can't wait to break out of work and get home to Vi!

There is another book that you might want to lay your hands on by Jane Goodall. I found it at a yard sale and couldn't believe it--the spine wasn't even cracked! It's called Harvest for Hope, a guide to Mindful Eating. Absolutely wonderful..and she's one of my idols, so that helped, too :)

Many of us are familiar with it--it IS a wonderful book! I read it (and reread it a couple of times and use it as reference :))...Congratulations on finding a good read to start you off your self sustaining lifestyle.

I can't tell you how wonderful this book is. (you can get it as a regular book, but I'm listening to it as I like to listen while I paint...) It is almost like a class on self sufficient living as they do all these things from raising their own turkeys, goats, chickens and huge garden and get this there is a websit they keep refering to in the book for all sorts of good info and tips and recipes!!!
Mary Jane needs to do a story on Barbara Kingsolver. She is my hero.
