I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the thyroid. Just a few days ago I noticed at the base of my throat where the little indent thing is that it's really tender and swollen right above that. I asked a nurse at church yesterday and she said it could either be thyroid or lymph nodes.

Last year around the beginning of the year I started getting knots on my neck and head. Went to the doctor and he said it was lymph nodes and not to worry. I went and got some wellness pills from the health food store and was fine in a few weeks. It did hurt, too.

And now this. I went and got another bottle of the wellness pills and started taking them yesterday. So if anyone knows anything about the thyroid, I'd love more info. I think I will go google it, too.

Thank you so much, Tina. I hope they schedule it in the next few weeks while the hubby is still home. And there is not much to do right now with the animals. Just hay for the cows and goats. Now in about 7-8 weeks it will pick up and get busy around here. The goats are all due then. I will have to start milking soon after. And the gardening really starts in the few weeks, too. That's why I hope I can get this done and over with as soon as possible.

Thanks so much for the offer. I might take you up on it one day, though! You are welcome to come up anytime, too. And thank you for the prayers, too.

I had the radioactive medicine they were wearing an lead apron,, lead gloves and the pill was in a big lead tube and they told me to take it and swollow it. I thought you won't touch it and you expect me to eat it? It did seem to help for a few years then I had to have it taken out, I will never forget it. I couldn't stop moving my body when I tried not to move my arms or hands did. I started over to my parents house and I only got about 100 feet I had my 5 year old with me and I told him to go get grampa who was about another 100 feet away. Jason went in but my dad was talking to a friend so he waited until my dad said to him what are you doing he said mommy is sleeping in the yard and asked me to tell you that. He then got a cookie and sat down to visit. Thank God my mom looked out the window and saw me. My dad took me to the hospital where they gave me a ton of junk to take to calm me down. Then the dr. came in and said to me "Oh your poor father,When I told him you probley would not make it he just fell apart." Can you image a doctor telling anyone that. I told her to get my dad and when he came in his eyes were red and teary, I reminded him I had 2 young sons and there was no way I was leaving this world any time soon. He said I know. Anyway I had the surgery and they took out my calicum glands by mistake along with the thyroid. So now I have to take a thyroid pill and a calicum pill and a vitD pill but I am well. I know a lot of people get this, my mom has had no problems since she had the iodion treatment 15 years ago and my 5 year old is now 30. It's scary but treatable. Good luck

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

The doctor finally called back yesterday evening. She said all the blood work came back good and the thyroid was fine. But there is a small growth on the right side of the thyroid. A nodule. She wanted me to come back in today and give more blood for more tests. But the nurse could not get any blood. I have hidden veins so it's very hard to get to them. The other day the nurse had to poke me 3 times before she found a vein. And today she tried in a different place and it blew and then on the back of my right hand and it blew, too. So she told me to come back in the morning and drink lots of water.

Anyway, she said I would need to have the growth removed. I said like in surgery removed? She said yes, unless I want to do the radioactive iodine. I said no thank you. So I guess I will have to have surgery on my neck now. I have no idea what is going to happen I have not been in a hospital in 28 years. I will have to talk to a surgeon first, I guess, to see what will happen next. I just don't know.

Now I have to wait through the weekend. I have a friend who is a day surgery tech and she was with my granddaughter when she had her taunsils removed. I want her to be with me if I have to have surgery. Even that word scares me. I do not want to stay overnight, either. They just need to knock me out, get it done and send me home. And I hope if I have to have it done I can do it while my hubby is still here.

I guess ya'll can tell I am very afraid and nervous. I am rambling now. I am the biggest wuss and sissy when it comes to pain and hospitals. I just hate this. I know there are so many people so much worse than this. I am just so afraid of this. So as you can tell, I will need lots of prayer and encouragement.

Thanks for listening. Ya'll are the greatest listeners.

Karen, I am ready for the 75 degree weather right now.

I went and had the sonogram and she said it would be 2 days before I find out anything. But yesterday afternoon while I was out back with the goats the doctor called with the results. But it was 6:30 when I heard the message. So I am calling at 9:00 and hopefully she'll be there and I won't have to wait anymore.

I would rather have the cold tahn the hot. I am Oven Woman and I'm getting a little tired of it. lol Make sure that the doc does a T3 and a T4 level. It gives them the most accurate picture for dosing purposes. That's what mine finally did and it made a big difference. Hang in there. :)
Are believing that it will be 75 degrees on Sunday?! Crazy Georgia weather.

Kristin...mine was found when I had to have a chest cat scan (for something else) and it got my neck in it too...showed a good sized nodule. First they did an ultrasound...which still showed just the one big one...then They found another one on the other side when I went for the iodine uptake and scan thing and then my regular doctor sent me to an endocrinologist. I actually never saw or felt them at all. I had two different biopsises (ugh!) 6 months apart which showed no cancer (whew!) so I was put on the Lexothyroxine (or something like that) for a few months to see if the nodules would shrink. Nope. So they took me back off that and I go back in April for another check up on my thyroid. He said at this point we are just watching to make sure they don't grow.
I USED to be always always too hot..and now always a little cold. I am real cold sometimes! The doctor said it should be the opposite but not for me...jeesh!Being too cold may be nice this summer though, right??

I went this morning and had an ultra sound done on my neck. The right side hurt when she was pushing that thing down. So I won't know for a few days but the doctor won't have blood work back til next week. I guess I'll find out then. I hate waiting more that anything.

It's beautiful here today. And quite warm. I think I will take the goats out back for a walk.

See ya'll. Kris

Kinda funny about the being cold, because I am always way to hot!! which is to the other extreme. My hubby used to say I was having hot flashes but I told him Im not that old yet. I went to the Dr. that was one of the first things he asked if I was hot all the time. I hate that part of it. I run around the house in shorts while he is cranking up the heat and bundling up. makes the heat of the summer miserable! Kristen my thoughts and prayers are with you. It is scary worring about the unknown but just know you are doing the right thing and getting on top of it. Hang in there it will get better just knowing what you are dealing with eases up the mind a little. I am here thinking of you and here anytime you need to talk. You are not alone.

Jenny, that's another thing. I am hardly ever cold and lately I can't seem to get warm enough. The plot thickens!

I hope you get it all worked out. Did you have swollen lymph nodes all over your head and neck? That happened to me last year. For no reason. Then just disappeared after a few weeks. Now this mess. I guess the thyroid is nothing to mess with.

And someone said something about not getting enough iodine. I have not used regular table salt in years but have used sea salt or mineral salt. The doctor said that sea and mineral salt do have iodine in them. Plus dairy products. I drink raw cow milk right now and will be drinking raw goat milk in a few months. So I should be getting iodine, right?

My thyroid has been screwy too...on meds, off meds, nodules and ups and downs. I am cold all the time and other things that I am pretty sure are affected by the thyroid. I hope you get some answers!!!

Ok, I went to the doctor today. They drew blood. Asked about the period. It just stopped. So they will check hormone levels, too. I have a suspicious looking mole right below the tender spot. She wants me to go to a skin cancer specialist, too. They'll make an appt asap for that and my hands. She said there were some spots there, too. I don't know if I'll be able to go out in the sun anymore if it is skin cancer. And I cannot wear long sleeves and gloves and hats and long pants in the summer. But I will just to be able to garden. I don't think I could stand not to be in the garden anymore. How awful would that be?

So I go in the morning to the imaging center to get a scan or something. Then back next week for results. I am so scared. I am such a pain sissy. And of course the first thing that I think of is cancer. And then not knowing and now having to wait another week to know anything.

Ya'll please keep me in your praters and thoughts. I know there are so many people with so much more than this. But it is a little scary. I will go to the Hogs And Prayers thread, too. I need lots of prayer! I will pray for ya'll, too. I did not realize how serious the thyroid is. And the radioactive stuff sounds too scary to me.

Thank you all for your concern, too. It means a lot to me to know I have so many sisters out there.

PLEASE get it checked out ASAP!!
I too have severe Graves disease and am on meds for the rest of my life too. Had the iodine radioactive treatment as well, over 10 years ago.,. Had to be in isolation for it and now still on meds. I have to have it checked again soon. My thyroid was working overtime, then slowed down after the radio active plus meds, and now is working overtime again. Am on other meds now to get it back to "normal" and then get new meds again. SO please get it checked, it is important and can get your whole body reacting strangely!!

Kristen, this is not something to mess with it truly is amazing all the things that little throid can do to you if it is out of wack. I have the hair loss tired all the time, cranky, BIG appetite, and my left gets sore! Also the heart problem thing. The radioactive iodine is a pill the size of something you would give a horse. It is in a little metal radioactive container which is kinda scary the tech sorta drops it in your mouth with out touching it. You go home and can't be around anyone for about a week or two. ( I am on week two today)I cant sleep in my own bed with hubby no hugs no nothing. I did get a week off work because I am in direct care and this wouldn't be to good on my clients.
What the radioactive iodine is doing is killing your thyroid. (if you spend to much time around anyone it could effect their thyroid)Now I have the chance it will go from Hyper to hypo and I will have to take a pill the rest of my life but it is easier to regulate that then the hyper. So I chose this route. Surgery is to remove the thyroid and basically the end result is the same with the radioactive iodine you just don't have to go through the surgery which I am all for. I guess I am a little vain but I didn't want a scar on my neck plus The down time and recovery is next to nothing this way all you have to do is stay away from everyone. you don't really feel any different)It takes three to six months to see if it worked.
Hope all my rambling helps.

Well, I know that if you don't get sufficient amounts of iodine in your diet you can develop goiter which is a very swollen/enlarged thyroid gland. The thyroid gland needs iodine to function normally and secrete thyroid hormone. Typically, this does not occur in the United States because we have iodized table salt for this purpose. I hope that helps a little. :)

I just spoke to my daughter who has graves disease and she says sign in on google for RAI or Graves disease and look for Jo Neal who runs the site and you can find all of your answers. My daughter also had what Laura had done and hers did'nt take even though they gave her the max dose available. Its very hard on her health and always will be. My prayers go out to all you gals. Hope you can find some reassurances from the site.

Wow. This is scary. Radioactive iodine. How do they do that? You didn't have to have surgery? That's what scares me the most.

I looked up on google the signs of thyroid problems. I have hair loss, sore joints, fatigue, several symptoms so far. My left eye is sore, too. I am just falling apart. It's awful to get old. And I'm only 50. Is this just the beginning?

I called my gyno to get an appt. with them. I have no idea what an endocrinologist is. I guess I could call my insc. company and find out. This is really scary. I hate being sick. And I hate pain more.

I sure hope ya'll get over this. But is this something you get over. Like Karin said she'll have to take medication the rest of her life. Oh my. I guess I better get this checked asap.

Thanks for the info. Kris

A few years ago I found myself with a bit of a sore throat and a very tender, swollen thyroid gland. It turned out to be De Quervain's Thyroiditis. I ran a fever for two weeks, lost fifteen pounds during that time and took antibiotics. DeQuervain's is a viral infection in the thyroid, but my glands were swollen and I developed a sinus infection on top of it. After enduring that little adventure, it decided to go the other way and I gained back the fifteen pounds and then some. Oh, joy. Oh, rapture. They did an iodine uptake and found my thyroid is now hypoactive, so I will take 88 mcg of levothyroxine, every day, for the rest of my life.
Get yours checked. Really, it is nothing to fool with.

Well, I just had radioactive iodine for my thyroid this week to try to "kill" off the bad part. I have nodules on my thyroid that were producing hormone that was affecting my heart rate and palipatations. So we shall see what this does for me. It has been a long week I can't be around anyone for a week or two. No hugs No Kisses. Whaaaa
To find this out I had a ultra sound done first and it found the nodules and second a radioactive scan which determined that the nodules were active.
Then the radioactive iodine to kill it. It will take several months to find out if the treatment was successful.
I suggest making an appointment with an endrocronologist (spelling?) That is what they specialize in.
