Does anyone have a recipe for homemade powder with rice flour? I made some one time but my kids moved out I cn't find the recipe again. I still have a large quantity of rice flour though.

Lily - wow I had no idea. I like the thought of becoming one with things of the earth (we are after all of the earth too). I will look into this closer and try it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and resources. I also love Mountain Rose Herbs. There was so much on the web site that I had to order a catalogue to be able to appreciate all the wounderful products.

Hey Glenda,

Kaolin clay is just white cosmetic grade clay powder. There is green clay, bentonite clay, red clay etc. but the white clay is the best for body powder. It is really fine and smooth not to mention the right color. : ) All of them have medicinal properties too like you can use them in a drawing poultice or a bug bite,...very drying. You can find it at natural food stores or at Mountain Rose Herbs online. It is pretty cheap. Since it has drying properties is helps you keep dry in the context of a body powder. I have also been known to grind down lavender flowers super fine (just a little) and mix them in.

Here is a quote from the wonderful herbalist Rosemary Gladstar :

"Clay is a wonderful substance from the earth. It is the essence of mountains ground down through the ages into a smooth powder. It has been blessed by thousands of sunrises, sunsets, windstorms, and rainstorms. When we use clay in our cosmetics, we are mixing the energy of thousands of years and using it as a beauty aid."

Anyhoo, hope that helps. : )

I have never heard of kaolin clay. What is it and where do you get it?

I tend to mix cornstarch with white kaolin clay with a couple of drops of essential oil whisked in. In a pretty jar with a makeup brush is a nice gift too.

You could also use the rice powder straight, I'm sure. I personally prefer arrowroot powder to cornstarch - cornstarch can "feed" yeasts if they are present, and some women use powders under the breasts, armpits, and in the crotch area - where yeasts can sometimes occur. However if this is not a problem for you, you can of course use the cornstarch!
