Well, we went to the doctor this morning to find out about what's the next move for our little one, who's just about a week overdue, and my blood pressure was sky high (160 over a lower number I can't remember...) and it didn't go much lower when it was tested again. Also, my urinalysis showed proteins, so the doctor decided that I didn't need to go back to work because I might be heading towards toxemia--which I understand is a related to kidneys, is that true? If so, that might explain the right sided back pain I've been experiencing...thinking it might have been labor, but not now that it's diminished.

My doc seemed really unnerved, and now would like me to do a urine collection for 24 hours and report back after the labs on Thursday, then he wants me to check in to the hospital for induction early Friday.

Has anyone else had this? I don't show any other signs of swelling, or anything else related to hypertension in pregnancy. Maybe my fingers a bit, but not badly enough to take my rings off.

I am actually amazed that your doc didn't send you in to the hospital right on the spot! I had it with baby #4 (although I was near seizing when I went in, BP over 200) and they did a csection within about 45 minutes of me being seen. Best wishes to you on your delivery! Hope all goes well!!

I think the idea of going into the hospital is a good one. Your baby is past due and itis time to let it come into the world, and your toxemia worries will then go away. Good luck, and I know it will go okay!

Hey girl! I had 2 big ole girls with toxemia and crazy blood pressure. It is serious, but you are so close to having that sweet girl on the outside which cures all! I agree with all the advice about doing what the doc says and relax. It only gets more exciting once she comes! This is just a small moment in the lifetime as a mother!

Friend Carolyn the nurse says to tell you - No salt. Read any label for salt content. She also says that since you're retaining fluids now, you may not want to drink too much water/fluids on top of that. What's your doc say about that?

He said he wanted to try to "stop me from heading towards being sick", so I'm thinking I'm right where you were, Jessie. My blood pressure was 160 over 120...But he talked with me and my husband and said that the only way he would put me in the hospital right then was if I couldn't stay off my feet. The baby isn't big...I've measured just right each week, but I think my body is ready and she just isn't.

I went into the hospital for the same thing when I had Tori. Just because you are leaking protein doesn't necessarily mean that you have toxemia. When I was admitted my blood pressure was 161/120...SKY HIGH!! They sent me to the maternity ward that same hour. I was induced the next morning. They did a cath 24 hr urine thingy. It was just that my body was REALLY ready to have the baby who didn't seem to want to come...lol
Toxemia can be harmful life Kay said, mostly to the mother. In one of the worst scenarios, it could cause kidney failure. However, if your doctors thought it was that bad, they would not wait to do a 24 urine analysis, they would induce you right then or possibly order you for a c-section.
My cousin just had her baby 2months ago and had the exact same thing. Pain in her back, high blood pressure, leaking urine. No toxemia but they induced her anyway because he was really big. Same as Tori she was really small...a preemie, but she was too big for me and it caused everything to go out of whack.:)
You are in good care with your doctors, and I am sure that they are watching out for you.
hugs and prayers!!

I had toxemia with my first baby. It is a very serious complication. More for the mother than the baby. I was on total bed rest for 4 weeks, no salt diet, and lots of water. Just be careful and take it very easy!

I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia for my first two pregnancies. I was diagnosed in the second trimester for my first pregnancy. My blood pressure got so high, that I was hospitalized a full week before they induced me. I wasn't diagnosed until a few weeks before I had my second child. Luckily I went in to labor the night before I was going to be induced. I didn't have it with my third pregnancy!

Giving birth is the only cure for this. I hope everything goes quickly and smoothly for you! Keep us informed on how you are doing! Your in my prayers.

Oh yeah....tried to go back to work in Sept (I teach) and I couldn't even put on shoes! Had to wear sandals. My little piggies were puffy round dough balls at the end of my very porky pie tootsies! I got carpal tunnel in both wrists and could hardly even use the remote!

My sodium was restricted to less than 1000 mg a day. NO prepared food! That is the worst...oh and no celery either. Also, no ham or bacon. Forget tomato juice/tomatoes, and no canned soup! Any veggies in a can, be sure to rinse. Fresh is best. Gravy, ketchup, mayo, pickles, relish...no, no, no, no, no. Read your labels. I'll tell you....low sodium was a HARD one for me! Bring on the chocolate dipped potato chips I say!!

You guys will be fine! Take care!

Well, I'm glad to know that you both have had experience with this--I was a bit blind sided this morning by it. I have been feeling a bit crappy (mostly tired) and a little warmer than usual, but c'mon, I've got an extra person!!! I did wake up quite a bit last week, sweating at night and just thought I had the heat too high.

Thanks girls...I will go get some water right now. My husband is working, and I will ask him to bring somethings home with him that DON'T fill me full of sodium.

Oh, Starmeadow...I couldn't help but laugh about your description of the blueberry girl. I know EXACTLY what you mean, and I'm sorry that you experienced that. I don't even have any swelling around my ankles...I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the nurses kept coming in, asking me about headaches and poking around my ankles. Now I get it.

I agree- Toxemia is something to be concerned about. My liver functions were through the roof and I was put into the hospital for a 24 hour observation because my doctor was afraid I was going to stroke or have a heart attack. Do the best you can and follow the doctor's instructions to the letter! Drink lots of water and try to lay down as much as possible. It is not uncommon for doctors to prescribe bed rest.

Try to not eat anything salty as that can lead to water retention and higher blood pressure. Also as T mentioned, drink lots of water! *hugs*

Not to scare you or anything but toxemia can be very dangerous for both you and your baby. I had it with my first. Interesting about the swelling though... I was so swollen that I looked a little like that little blueberry girl from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Limiting your salt intake (a lot) and drinking more water will help with that. I too got called in ahead of time for induction. Mine didn't go so well. My BP was extremely high (high enough to be concerned about stroke and enough to prompt a c-section) Prior to that, I was on bed rest for more about a month.

Just do what your doc says, rest, and get ready to have that bambino soon! Keep your stress low and breathe. Your toxemia can't be "cured". The birth of your baby should help with that. It can be scary for sure...but it sounds like your doc is all over it. Congrats on your new addition!!
