So I'm happy to announce that the holiday season has caused me only to gain back 3 of the 7 pounds that I lost during the fall. I'm currently at 161, still chasing that elusive number of 125.

No guilt, ladies, fess up! It's a new year. Let's start making good on those resolutions.

Green Tea--antioxidants. Free radicals causes cancer. Well, I was diagnosed in April 2005 with breast cancer. Went through that surgery thing, then that darn chemo thing, and now I am on that radiation thing for the next 6 weeks. The last mammogram showed that NO new cancer cells are showing. This has been ---- and I don't wish this on anyone except my ex-husband. They were telling me that Premarin (hormone replacement pill) and me being little overweight didn't go good together. My body said I had too much estogen and it still is in my fat. Cancer lives and breaths on estogen in women. Please all women, check yourself weekly and be sure to have good insurance. For me insurance was not available, but now I am getting some help. Losing weight is hard.

Congratulations Amanda!!! I always get so excited when someone is going to have a baby. As long as you feel fine you are safe doing a brisk walk. It's very healthy for the baby. Anything else you want to do, I would check with your Dr. though. Good luck with your pregnancy!!!

I've never had a baby before, and I don't even know how much exercise I'm allowed to do. I have to ask my doctor.

Amanda, congratulations!!! You don't have to drop out. You won't be losing weight now, but eating healthy, exercising, and keeping the pregnancy weight under control are all important issues and I'm sure you'll still have a lot to share with us. Do you have any other children? (Sorry if I missed that on any other postings) Again...CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Well, it appears that I have to drop out of my own diet support group, as I've just discovered I'm pregnant.

Good luck to all.

Since the holidays, I haven't been as strict with my eating as before, but I did lose and am down 20lbs now. I want to get back on track and lose the next 20. Then I will be where I want to be. Still am having a hard time with getting into the exercising. Losing the weight slowly has been good,I'm not gaining it back even when I cheat a little. They say that the longer it takes to come off, the better it will stay off.

We just started a program for after work...It is so convenient to just stay a half hour or so..Dont have to drive anywhere or stop once you leave the office.
The tape is Leslie Sansone "Walk away the Pounds" 3 miles..I have been trying to power walk twice a day at breaktime to loose a few pounds...I thought I was doing pretty good but when I did the tape last night... I was working muscles that I forgot I had! The great thing about this tape, is that you can stop anytime- when you reach a 1/2 mile to the whole 3 miles...And it isn't difficult to follow or to strenuous a workout..

I'm not Whimsy_girl but to answer your question about exercise ball, no they are not hard at all once you get used to them. The whole idea is to challenge your muscles to keep your balance on them. In the beginning it may be a little difficult and there are some advanced exercises that are hard but stick with a beginners exercise and you'll see how much fun they are. I started with a beginners ball exercise tape from Gaiam taught by Susan Deason and it's fun.

Whimsy_girl,
Are the exercise balls hard to use. I thought about getting one, but I didn't want to end up breaking my neck!!
I am not real coordinated when it comes to exercises, I had a few DVD's that I just couldn't get!!

Now that the babies are 1 and 2 there is really no excuse to still have the extra 20 lbs I am carrying either. My husband and I have decided to get on a walking routine each puching a baby in a stroller. That way we are each pulling our own weight plus an additional 25 or so pounds of kid along with us. We are also going to cut back on the calories to try and slim down that way too..

I have an excercise ball I use at night sometimes before bed and I want to get better about using that too. otherwise when I lose my weight I'll have that weird extra hangy post baby skin around my middle.. and no one wants to see that!

you can be oh so smart, or you can be oh so positive. I wasted a lot of time being smart I prefer being positive.

I have a slight weight problem... I have to loose 15-20lbs. My cousin is in town and she looked freaking wonderful. She had lost 20lbs. She is an instructer for the Coast Gaurd, I asked her what she had done. She said she was working out everyday, she had joined a gym, et all. But she did not loose any weight. Then she joined Jenny Craig and found out about portion control. She said that some veggies and fruit actually put weight on you instead of helping you take it off. I'm hoping I can get that list from her!
I had lost 5 lbs before the holidays... it's back with a couple of friends.

Right now with the situation with my grandma there is a ton of BAD food around. I really wanted a donut today but knew it was on the no no list. I simply cut a small section of it and ate that. I knew if I told my self NO I would crave it more. This way I got the taste but not all the bad stuff too. I'm not sure how long my will is going to hold up as the stress builds up. Wish me luck.
CathyM Posted - Jan 16 2006 : 10:05:36 PM
I noticed today that my new pants (just bought them a week and a half ago) need to be taken in... YAY. I haven't weighed myself so I don't know how much I weigh or how much I've lost. As long as the clothes are getting bigger that's all I really need to know. I'm feeling a bit better and that's encouraging.

I drink 3 - 4 cups of green tea a day, but I always start my day off with a cup of coffee, can't seem to break the habit nor do I want to.

I'm going to be eating oatmeal for my breakfasts starting tomorrow. And I am not eating any white flour at all, as I said before. I even get the wheat pasta or even the veggies pasta, when I can slip it past the family, shhhh .

I think my main problem is portions, I need to control them and not snack at night. At this point when I want a snack I make a cup of tea or drink a glass of water and if that doesn't help there's always an apple with a dab of organic peanut butter on it.

Soups are always good, I try not to add rice or noodles to mine, just veggies.

I would love some recipes that are baked, that include veggies and/beans without too much cheese, yes cheese is my downfall. I am trying to cut out cow cheeses and just eat sheep and/or goat cheese, it's limiting me on the cheese front but that a good thing.

I also eat a lot of salads, although it's not the best thing to eat in the winter when all you crave is warn foods.

Yep-Lost almost 20 pounds previous to the holidays ~and gained 10 back...Now~ I quit smoking...Oh boy~~ how much do ya think I will gain now !!??
I am power walking twice a day- 20 minutes each- at breaktime at work...I am hoping I can take the weight off and not gain anymore back~!~~
I still say the best thing is to watch portions~~But-the problem is ...that my portions are being watched ...and they are getting larger and larger and larger....lol
Holidays are over now-time to think of spring and summer..Plenty of exercise while working dawn to dusk..Cant wait!! That will shed some inches off!!

Mary Ann, I so agree with you on the slow loss of weight. I went to a group that met and utilized the Dr. Phil diet. I stuck with it for about a year and lost about 28 pounds. It was so slow, but now two years later i have kept it off, and am now motivated to start up again where i left off. That is a pretty good thing to be able to say about any diet. It was sensible as well. I started up again last week and have lost about 5 pounds so far. I know that it is always easier in the beginning, and I will slow down again, but this is something that I can live well and stick to. I don't like red meat either, and we eat as organically as possible, I wish all of you the best in your endeavors, whatever works best for you.

DH and I are walking for an hour most nights. It isn't much, but with my back, it is something. I'm looking for a yoga or tai chi class - I need help building my body back up after my back injury, right now one wrong move can make life difficult for a few days and I know a good part of that problem is a lack of muscle! Something I always had before!

By early summer I hope to have gotten my hands on a road bike. I have a mountain bike but it is heavy - I may be able to use it by next year I guess.

The hardest part of losing weight is food! We cook a lot of Italian, I'm trying to keep us more on the veggie soups and the lighter pasta & rice dishes (the stuff I usually make in the Summer, because you are so hot you don't want a heavy meal!). The baked pastas are so perfect for a cold winter day though - so I do make one heavy meal a week that includes some red meat (well, in an italian dish, you'll have pasta, 2 kinds of cheese, a little each of ground beef, Italian sausage, pork AND bacon all baked in there - so good but so not good on a diet!) Making whole wheat breads instead of our favorite white (sigh) and cutting back on the butter.

I don't have far to go on the weight loss part - but my hubby needs to lose around 50 pounds. So, we're trying!

I just saw an ad for The Sonoma Diet and thought it sounded interesting as I LOVE Mediterranean food. DH and I have been doing a lot better with our eating though and exercising. He has joined a gym and has lost 4 pounds so far. I didn't join the gym because I have so many tapes, DVD's, weights, balls, bikes, etc. that I just need to get up off my butt and do it. I did start about 2 weeks ago this plan.. www.coolrunning.com , the couch to 5K program. I haven't noticed a diffrence yet but we'll see. I was hoping I'd see changes by now but I will not get discouraged. I need to lose 15-20 pounds to get to my ideal weight.

Cathy, you're right; a cheeseburger from time to time isn't going to kill you. I think it makes a lot more sense to simply have them less frequently, replacing them from time to time with more healthful fare. But I don't think eliminating anything important to you is very smart over the long haul.

Here's some good news for your health. Green tea is very high in antioxidants, a substance your body uses to clean up something called free radicals. Free radicals can spur the beginnings of cancer, so antioxidants are our friends. Some foods are very high in these, such as brightly colored berries, and even red wine. Even chocolate is good for you, if you select the dark kind. It's dark pigments have the same effect as berries, and as long as you limit yourself to small portions, you should be fine.

More veggies and beans is excellent! We also get more flavonoids by consuming more vegetable matter, and organic gives us the most of all. Flavonoids are substances that come from plants that activate the plant's immune system to be strong. Organic has more because they never know chemicals which kill bugs; they have to produce flavonoids and fight them themselves. Flavonoids stimulate our immune systems to be stronger, too; the more we get, the less vulnerable we are to common germs. I once read that organically produced corn contains 23% more flavonoids than commercially produced corn. Just think--- one fourth more, for no additional calories!

If you don't lose weight right away when you increase activity, don't worry. Muscle tissue is denser and heavier than fat, so you can actually be losing body fat and gaining muscle, and your weight won't change an ounce. But your composition is much improved! And climate makes a difference, too. I notice that when the hot, humid weather starts in summer, I automatically retain about two extra pounds of fluids, just so I can sweat enough while I work the horses.

Studies have shown that slower losses of 1-2 pounds a week are the losses that are sustained a year and five years later. So, don't think about what you want to weigh this week; think about what you want to weigh next year, and work toward that. Many people think that's too hard until they think about what they would have wanted a year AGO, and wish they'd planned better for now.

It always works better if you work for improved health, and let the weight loss come with it. And be gentle to yourself; none of us is perfect, and we just gotta keep on trying to aim toward health!

I'm trying very hard to eat less and less meat, it's not an easy thing to do when you have been brought up on the stuff and everyone in the house wants meat all the time. But I have been incorporating more veggies and beans into the meals. I still crave those cheeseburgers from time to time also but hey once in a while isn't going to kill you, I hope. I have stopped eating white flour and white sugar. Although that chocolate calls to me sometimes. I am also drinking more green tea in hopes that it really does help in the weight lose. I walk to and from work 3 - 5 times a week, I'm on my feet all day but still seam to not be losing weight. I am hoping that cutting out a few things in my diet will help. At this point I am not looking at the big picture I just want to take it 5 pounds at a time that way I don't disappoint myself when it doesn't come off really fast. Here's hoping it works..

Bridgette -

It is opposite in our household on the vegetarian thing. My husband is kinda "grossed out" by meat to a degree, so we have slowly gone more veggie. I am not a huge meat eater, but still like the occasional hamburger, etc. We rarely, or almost never eat red meat. Which I have to admit has made a good change in how we feel. I am constantly looking for recipes that exclude meat or are fish based. It is sometimes hard, because some veggie recipes I have found are lacking, not because they do not have meat, but because of the combination of ingredients (I guess). Either they come out too watery or just blah - and I do use herbs and other seasonings to spice them up. So I keep looking. I find that some recipes that are the mushroom base, are the heartiest and have the most flavor. I had a recipe that was like beef burgandy, but without the beef, you used mushrooms instead and it was great - very flavorful. Keep looking I am sure you can find some great veggie substitutes that your husband will like and won't miss the meat. If you are not going vegan - there are a lot of pasta recipes out there that are cheese based that I have found to be good too.

Sorry to ramble, but I understand how hard it is to make the change.

I've been doing an exercise routine for 10 days now. I would like to lose just 15 lbs, to keep it realistic. But I have not noticed any changes yet. How long does it take? The weight would be nice but I also want to increase my energy level. I'm tired of feeling tired. I'm making a conscious effert to improve the whole families eating. Less sugar, and 'white' foods, more whole foods!
Stay with it, ladies! Here's to good health in 2006!

Keep a place apart, within your heart, for little dreams to go!

I follow the WW core plan for most of the time. I really like it and feel so much better when I do.My nails & hair grow so much better, which I would say is a good sign.
I have removed all artificial sweetners from my diet since the new year. I have also stopped
drinking diet soda, or soda in general. For me this has been a great accomplishment, I drank 3-5
sodas a day. I pray I can keep them gone. It has been really hard, but I can do anything I set my mind to!!
I also have been really thinking about a vegatarian lifestyle. It is something that keeps bouncing around in my mind. Is anyone hear vegatarian? I worry that I might loose some nutrition, but meat sorta grosses me out anymore. I will struggle though because, DH is a avid meat eater. That makes meal planning hard.
I would really like to loose around 35 pounds. I need to get back on th exercise band-wagon.
The weather hasn't cooperated with outdoor walking, so I need to use my "Walk Away the Pounds" DVD's.

Diane -

I saw that book "Sonoma Diet" in a magazine. Sounded good and was thinking of ordering it. Do the recipes look to be quick and easy? That is my biggest challenge is to have recipes that are fast since I work fulltime and am very tired when I get home, don't really want to spend hours in the kitchen trying to make a good meal. DH will eat almost anything, so if I go on a diet, he just follows along, especially if he wants to get fed . I need to lose big time, so I want something that is easy and no counting. I hate counting - tried it many times and failed.

Okay Diane, tell about the Sonoma Diet.

I'm doing something a bit different for me, but I have to. It's the books that Weight Watchers' new Core plan is from, called Volumetrics. I didn't want to pay the monthly fees and/or attend meetings, so this is a good solution for me. The reason I like it is it's very healthy; all food groups are present, and there's an emphasis on veggies and fruits.

I need to be about 130 to look decent in breeches, and that's about 20# away.
