Posted - Jan 07 2009 : 11:21:30 AM Hey Ladies, I know ya'll are knowledgable and some have experience with this debilitating condition. I have a friend who is having a time of it, and she is unable to pay full price for Lyrica.( she also takes some other meds for other conditions although they all seem to cooincide with the fibromyalgia and it's depression, anxiety, and fatigue side affects) Her and I are researching like crazy nutritional supplements and a change in diet in order to alleviate some symptoms. I was just wondering if you had any dietary or homeopathic suggestions that we could look into.
Here's what we've come up with:(might help some sufferers) Do Eat - barley all peppers carrot juice, nuts seeds whole grain tubers flax seed oil EVOO astralagus echinacea
Herbs to eat: cayenne(for the capsaicin, but found in all peppers) fennel lemon balm aloe vera, flax seed, garlic(for intestinal cleansing purposes)
DO NOT EAT: glutamate(found in many foods naturally and MSG) alcohol caffeine refined sugar/corn syrup hydrogenated oil refined flour dairy eggs all meat
Supplements to look into: SAMe w/ protein rich foods Emu oil(ingestable capsule) digestive system cleansing _______________________________________ -capsaicin: inhibits neurotransmitters which are responsible for communicating pain signals
-to help sleep: skull cap or valerian root -to combat fatigue: ginseng
-garlic, astralagus, echinacea: help boost circulation allowing oxygen and nutrients to flow through the body
-digestive system cleanse: (some say fibro may be caused by excessive build up of toxins and allergens in the body) the cleanse helps reduce stress put on the nervous system by eliminating these toxins
-glutamate: (bonds protein & amino acids) found in beef, tomatos, corn, parm chz, fish, mushrooms, and chicken
If you have any helpful information, please let us know!
Thanks Cristine

Posted - Jan 10 2009 : 12:19:58 PM Wow, Terri. Your mom's diet would do anybody in. And I'll bet she thinks the diet pop is good for controlling her weight and that the yogurt is actually good for her. Maybe you can take her away on a short vacation of your choosing. A place where you can control what she gets to eat. I'd bet a one week vacation would be enough to start making a difference that she'll feel.

Posted - Jan 08 2009 : 12:36:53 PM My mom has fibro and eats horribly! She only has about of 1/2 of her stomach (the rest was removed to ulcers 40 years ago). She does not eat meat, saying it is difficult for her to digest.
Her staples are: Diet soda white flour pastries yogurt (not the good kind)
I have tried to make her things to try like lacto fermented veggies, kefir water, kombucha etc. It is so very frustrating to see her feel so bad, and have her not want to help herself.
One of the reasons she is so down is due to her diet.

Posted - Jan 08 2009 : 09:05:56 AM So sorry to hear about your friend. Fibro is a tough one to deal with. I was diagnosed a few years ago. Over a year ago the Dr. put me on Lyrica but I can't take it and stay functional. I have tried hundreds of things and here is what I found helps me.
1. Source of Life LIQUID vitamins - Can not function without this. Contains lots of vit B's, minerals and all the good stuff you need. Helps with energy
2. Magnesium - I take 1000 mg once a day. It seems to help with the actual pain. A lot of Fibro patients are lacking in magnesium
3. D-Ribose - This is naturally made by the body. Studies are showing that for some reason Fibro patients are lacking. This is WONDERFUL for energy. Really lifts the Fibro fog. Good Morning America had Dr. Oz on and he said this is the go to stuff for the really tough fatigue that comes with Fibro and CFS. I take 1 teaspoon 3x a day.
4. Vials of Ginsing with Bee Pollen - Great for energy. Take when an extra boost is needed.
5. Nettle infusions - 1/2 cup of nettle in a quart jar. Cover with boiling water. Let steep for 4 hrs. to overnight. Add honey. Refrigerate after opening. Drink a quart a day. Nettle helps with inflamation, provies iron & calcium and helps stimulate the kidneys to flush toxins
6. Chia seeds - Yes Chia seeds. I use a scoop 2x a day. Chia is has tons of good nutrients, lots of Omega oils and is easier absorbed thatn Flax seed oil, TONS of good fiber so it helps cleanse the colon and gives energy. Ancient Aztec warriors use to eat chia seeds before battle or running long distances.
7, Garlic tincture - just plain good for you
8. Lacto ferminted foods - Yogurt, Keifer, SaurKraut, Kimchee, ect. These foods but the good bacteria back into your digestive system and keep your insides running like they should.
9. I eat lots of fruits, veggies, & whole grains. I do eat fish and meat but it is organic.
10. Be careful with the nightshade veggies - Green peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, ect. They have been shown to cause an increase in pain for some people
11. Take a bath with dead sea salt to help relieve inflammation and stiffness.
Hope this helps and remember we all respond different
