We hit a deer the night before last on our way to Montana to visit my husbands family..

We both felt awful about it, Hal gets misty when he hits dragonflies and fluffy bee's so he was pretty sad about killing the deer. To quote his mom, "he missed the deMontigny hunting gene" He apologized to the deer and we made sure it was no longer moving before we just left her there.. I wish they didn't run out like that it's really sad. There were 2 in the middle of the road. it was foggy and we swerved to avoid them but the one closest to us just bolted like a dummy The speed limit was 60 where we were and he goes under that in the fog so I bet we hit going about 45 or something.

Hal and the kids were just fine but I was leaning over funny trying to reach the baby's bottle between the seats, anyway when we hit I wrenched my back something awful and I can't get back to my chiropractor until I get home on the 28th.

Does anyone have any tips to ease the ouch so I can get some sleep through the holidays? I've been popping tylenol and it takes the edge off but I would love some simple tips, or stretches or something.. I've been doing the resting position and cow and cat positions in our room in the mornings so I can kind of unlock it.. that worked yesterday but not so much this morning...

Oh and our poor car! Our full coverage expires in January so we are really lucky to still have that. The whole front is smashed and the grill is just GONE. It will still get us home but wow .. it looks like we drove into a brick wall.

Anyway, sorry to be a whiney baby so close to Christmas, but everyone here is so good at mommying everyone else that I thought some of you may have a "tried and true" trick up your sleeves that I can use.

have a very merry!

Bobbi

Hi Bobbi,
Having hit a couple of deer myself through the years, I know what a scary thing it is...not to mention the car damage and the emotional trauma... I'm not sure what the resting position is that you mentioned, but lying on the floor with your legs bent and supported on a chair or bed as often as you can is helpful. And sitting in a chair as little as possible, but that's easier said than done I know. Someone mentioned alternating heat and cold.My chiropractor recommends cold packs 20min, alternated with hot packs 15min - cold, hot, cold, hot, cold -- 3 or 4 times a day. I like the heat best but the cold is very effective. I also use the herb Valerian with my Ibuprophen for a little muscle relaxation. Good luck and glad everyone is okay! Barb

Though have often threaten the deer that graze so freely in my yard, I would be sad if I were to hit one. SOrry you have born the brunt of the impact. Praying you will find relief to enjoy the rest of the holiday season. Hugs, gently of course.

I'm glad to hear you guys were okay. Deer accidents can be nasty to the people inside too. Forget about the Tylenol it will do nothing for your injury. Take Advil (ibuprofin) for the injury and it's okay to take 3 pills if your very sore. Also I agree with everyone else -hot and cold pads and stretching exercises. Hope it helps.

Bless your heart Bobbi, Wish I could give you a hug! So sorry about this situation. I always soak in a nice hot tub (everynight) mostly to get my back muscles to relax, followed up with a session on the heating pad. Works wonders for me. Could help you? Lu

Bobbi, So grateful your family is safe and you got by with only a wrenched back! It could have been so much worse! Blessings to you and yours! A sprained back hurts like heck! Advil helps my aches and pains and when I sprained my ankle that is what I used. Ice packs help too, and rest. I am sending you prayers and good thoughts!

Using ibuprofen (a little larger dose than normal will not hurt if done cautiously) and a cold pack really relieves me when my back goes. And it always seems to happen on holiday trips! Hope you are feeling a little relief. My prayers go out to you. Merry Christmas, Bobbi.

Hi Bobbi,
Just checking in and saw your situation... never a good thing to hit a deer... glad everyone is ok. Regarding helping your back in the interum, try this: Find a good size ball, ie soccer size or kick ball size, and lay over your lower back onto it. Just feel your spine stretch out. Work your way up your back by rolling up it. Do this slowly and you will feel your vertebrae aligning and your muscles relaxing. Do several times a day, or at least morning and evening. Alternating hot and cool packs and overall stretching also are benefical. Good luck.

Ouch! Advil is good for this kind of injury because it contains an anti-inflammatory. I have severe arthritis in my knee. My NP told me you shouldn't exceed the Advil dosage but you can alternate it with Tylenol. Advil for inflammation, Tylenol for additional pain relief so that you can sleep. If you space them four hours apart you should get fairly decent relief. It's much easier on your liver than taking too much Advil.

I know it's hard with little ones, especially a baby, but rest rest rest those muscles. I hope you're feeling better quickly.

Oh, Bobbi what a close call. I am sorry about your back. When mine hurt I used aspercreme or one of those icy hot patches, they really helped. And the sports therapy people always say hot then cold. Take care and Merry Christmas.

Greetings from the morning side of the hill.

Oh Bobbi..that is so hard..I hate to see all the dead deer on the roads here..they come out like crazy as soon as the mountains near us are snowy..looking for food closer to town. Thre were two does in a yard right on main street yesterday (not that this is even a town with a stoplight..but still!!) I am so afraid I will hit one some time! I am so happy and thankful for you that your family is all okay. It IS amazing what a deer can do to a car though!! I will keep you all in my prayers and especially your poor back...I hope you feel better soon!!

Bobbi -- I am so glad that you and your family are ok. I feel sorry when any animal gets hit but a deer can sure do some serious damage to a car and the passengers. We have them all the time in the roads around here. I was coming back from my daughter's one night about dusk and 5 ran across the road in front of my car. I almost hit one. I would recommend what my chiropractor tells me to do -- alternate heat and cold. 20 minutes every two hours. Hope you start to feel better.
