Yesterday I went swimming for exercise (lap swim) at the college. It felt great to be swimming and exercising again. I even got to sit in the sauna for a while afterwards.

However by the time I got home, I was feeling almost sick. Headachey, muscle aches (in neck and such so not sore from exercise), and just ill. I think my poor diet lately (eating a lot of junk food) has left a lot of toxins in my body and exercising just exacerbated the problem.

Today I am craving swimming again, so I am going to go again. I know I will probably be feeling icky again afterwards. I expect it is going to be at least a week or so before I don't have this after-effect from exercising.

But I am so thrilled to be exercising. I am completely sick and tired of not feeling fit and able to do as I wish. I'll let you know how it goes!!

The sauna always made me ill. I learned to avoid them. For some odd reason I don't sweat. I would love to join a pool, but can't afford to at this time. Hopefully I'll get to next year.

The pool I swim at is warm enough not to give me a horrible shock and to be comfortable when swimming in. It's just about perfect.

One of the things that is warned about for using swimming to lose weight is the rebound effect. When swimming in cold water, it tricks our body into using more calories- but also to craving more calories.

I think using the hot sauna after the cold pool helps keep my cravings down.

The only bad thing is I have managed to misplace my student ID so I have to get it replaced. :(

As soon as I feel my heart start to quicken i'll get out. Same here, hot tubs do the same thing. It feels good at first, then makes me feel kind of weird. That's when a shock of cooler pool water really wakes you up.

and here's a funny.

I'm going to guess that most pools aren't heated very much, even in winter. That first jump in is a realy eye opener, and makes you swim faster for about the first 2 laps. Well, the pool at our local Y is super heated. That's not a good thing. a lot of older people use this facility and they actually complain if the water is too cold. So there is no real shock or "warm up" period per se. When I get out, sometimes my cheeks are flushed from generating natural heat in addition to the hotter pool.

I found that the sauna made me feel sick. I cannot do saunas or hot tubs. No doubt the cems in the pool are not good for you, but you might try skipping the sauna. You might feel better. (Or not.) Enjoy your swim, gotta be good for you.

For getting the chemicals out of hair, you can try Ultraswim shampoo

OR Albrey Organics also has a nice anti-chlorine formulation too

Don't forget to rise your suit out in clod water when you get home. It will last longer this way.

I swam for all 6 years in college. Nothing team oriented, just for exercise and to off -set the beer and pizza. I REALLY miss being able to just walk 100 or so paces out the door and have quick access to a pool even in the dead of winter.

Keep up the good work. Don't feel too badly, I';m an M&M addict. Can't seem to give these up. We all have our vices.

For your muscle fatigue, in the short term, try not eating much of anything before you swim. If you do, make it at least 2 hours before. That way most will be out of your gut and can give you better usable energy. And I have kown some swimmers to take a water bottle w/ them to the pool. You do sweat in the water, but obviously don't know it cause you are already wet. Might want to try the sauna before workout too. Might not feel so drained afterward.

Yes, the chemicals are a bummer, but this pool is really clean and doesn't have as much of a chlorine smell as a public pool. Perhaps because it is used less or by an older crowd so it get contaminated less.

Swimming is such a great sport and I too love the water. I sometimes wonder about all the chemicals in public pools. One thing I would suggest is to use swimmers shampoo and conditioner as well as swimmers body wash to get all those chemicals off before you go home. My neice who cuts hair told me once to put conditioner in my hair before I put on my cap so the chlorine wouldn't soak into my hair. I always forget though.
My youngest daughter was a dedicated swimmer from 5th grade through college, swimming year round, sometimes twice a day. Hopefully she won't have any problems from all that chlorine. Happy Lapping!

Also I find public pools usually make me ill in general, since I was a kid. All those chemicals! UHG! (my uncle invited Prozone-brand name, generic name, Ozonator). Any way, it was originally for swimming pools so you don't have to use chemicals. He invented it way back in the late 70's. So in my families pools we never had chemicals, so when ever I've been to public ones the chemicals make me ill! (my family is allergic to those chems, that's why my uncle invented what he did).

Any way that, and I believe people urinate and do so many unsanitary things in the pool, that I probably get anything they had.

I pool walked last week, and felt horrible afterwards (it was at a hotel). I believe it was all the chems! UHG. It felt nice while I was doing it though. I wish I could have my own pool at home, and not worry about the chemicals!

Diana- I agree. I drank more water today and did not feel sick afterwards. I was also careful to eat less junk food before I went (I still ate some chips and had a pop. It's hard cutting out all vices right away!)

I swam harder today, really digging into the water and I worked on my swimming form. My shoulders are slightly sore which is wonderful to feel and I really need to buy a pair of goggles. Yesterday I only swam for 15-20 minutes and today I did a full half hour. I am going to try to go every day, but we will see how that works out. I feel really good and they have this wonderful sauna that I get to sit in afterwords!

Drink LOTS of Water your are in need of the water even being in the water thats why the headache and body aches.
