Besides cough medicine, which I hate to take, or cough drops, which don't really help, is there anything else I can do to soothe my sore throat. I have been rubbing Vicks menthol rub on my throat, but that is not working. Any herbal remedies or other ideas. Thanks.
Marly

Okay I forgot to tell you what REALLY helps me with my sore throat.
I had a severe sore throat.. The worst ever. I wasn't able to talk or anything it hurt so bad. My mom called my grandma and asked what she had used when she was a kid. It taste rather gross... but trust me it works. I swear by it!

2 Tablespoons of Lemon
1 Tablespoon Honey
Either Ibuprofen or Tylenol crushed up.
(MAKE SURE YOU REALLY CRUSH IT UP!!!)
Heat it up in the microwave for 10 seconds. And drink it.
Of course you can add more Lemon or Honey if you prefer. But the way I have it there really helps.
I hope you get to feeling better!!

When I have a sore throat I drink great big mugfuls of peppermint tea with honey and lemon. So good. Feel better soon!

I do know that you can get a Neti Pot at your local Walgreens.
At least that is what their Website says. I will be going there later today. I hope it works as well as everyone says, we will see!
I also have a severe sore throat, congestion, & earache. I hope you get to feeling better

I hate to sound stupid, but I have no earthly idea what a neti pot is. Please explain where to get one, and what exactly do I do with it.

Yes, last night I could not sleep because I was coughing over and over and over and over. It was tiring. I got up and checked out the medicine cabinet. In there I found some cholraseptic cough drops, big red ones. It really soothed my throat. I did get about three hours of sleep, but then again, coughing, coughing........ I'm going to town tomorrow to pick up what I need for the honey thing. Thanks for the good advice.

I have heard of using acv & honey. The acid is supposed to kill the bacteria & the honey is soothing & also a natural antibiotic. Have you ever tried Chloraseptic?(sp) It is numbing, you just spray it into the back of your throat. Hope you feel better soon. A sore throat just feels terrible.

Ricola herbal or Slippery elm cough drops from your local "health food" store or co-op may help with the discomfort, but I am in on the neti pot too, if you don't have one you need one. I hope you feel better soon. I loathe sore throats.
The slippery elm or Ricola brand drops are soothing and helped me last time I had a sore throat, but the neti pot kept it from turning into a doctors visit.

I ditto the Neti-pot. In between using the pot and gargling I drink hot water with lemon and honey. It helps sooth the throat and gives you an extra boost of vitamin C. Plus it dosen't upset my stomach the way syrup or cough drops can.

You can gargle with apple cider vinegar, and water. Put a dribble of acv into a glass of water and gargle several times a day. My husband swears by this one!

Gargle with salt water and rinse your nasal passages out with a Neti pot.

The thing that is making your throat sore is the infected drainage that goes down the back of your throat. If you rinse out your sinus passages with the Neti Pot- the saline will help kill some of the bacteria/virus and rinse out the drainage.

Gargling with warm salt water vibrates the back of your throat and rinses out a lot of the drainage as well. The salt will also kill any bacteria/virus that are hanging out in your throat.

You should do the routine at least twice a day. I have felt strep throat coming on before and have been able to stave it off by doing this routine.

Also you can buy some drops at the health food store that are Elderberry, Golden Seal, and Echinachia that are AMAZING. They have really helped me when I was sick. I used them instead of going to the doctor for one of the most painful sore throats that I have ever had and I was better in 3 days!
