I have a badly broken ankle and while it is in a cast and I've been given pain medicine, I want to help the bones out and supplement them with other things that are encouraging in their healing process. So what is good for broken bones and bone strength besides calcium
supplements? If my fellow farmgirls have any advice, I would be grateful

Annika, magnesium helps calcium to be fixed in the bones. If you can find it in a liquid form that is the very best, especialy if you take it before any solid food every morning for 3 weeks.
Take it easy and put your foot up any time you can. Don't forget a piece of chocolate and a hug are among the very best health medecines.

I too have read that when taken internally, comfrey fries the liver and kidneys. This might depend on the dose and induvidual

Might want to go easy on this and stick w/ the other teas

Hope you heal fast!

Hey Annika...gosh, I am sorry to hear about the broken ankle :( Just adding my two cents: boneset is good but in a few cases, has a side affect as a laxative, so be cautious.

Comfrey...also known as "knit bone". That should tell you something, huh? Comfrey has the amazing ability to actually assist the body in knitting bone back together. It is one of the best healing herbs I know of and we keep a nice, healthy patch growing in the corner of the yard. Whenever someone has a bad fall, a bump, or a bruise I send them out for a big comfrey leaf, crush it up in my hand and wrap it around the injury. It works great! You can also take comfrey internally as a tea...but the medical community will insist that this is dangerous to do. As an herbalist, I am convinced that comfrey is still safe. It was used for hundreds, if not thousands, of years as a medicinal and all of my Amish neighbors still take it internally as well. Just use it in moderation.

You should be drinking a high calcium herbal tea...1/2 gallon per day. My favorite blend contains oatstraw, chamomile, spearmint, red raspberry and peppermint. If you decide to take comfrey internally you could just add some to this blend. **And I also agree with goat's milk! We raise goats...goat milk is awesome for good health and strong bones.**

Thank you all for the help and kind words and thoughts. I'll be getting all of those herbs and tincture and thinking positive healing thoughts. I am grateful for the information ladies, thank you

Marly, thank you. It is pretty painful today, but I am not taking a full dose of the pain killers either. I have a boot cast and can hobble on it and my toes have some feeling back in them, which is good! Thank you for the prayers and concern, it means a lot from a fellow farmgirl =)

Tea made of oatstraw, nettles and alfalfa. If you aren't able to get them, let me know and I'll send you some. Most herb shops will have it, though. I sent some to a friend in Detroit who had a bad break and he now swears by it. Good luck, Judy
