I had a little too much fun out in the sun while camping this weekend, and now I've turned a shade of brilliant lobster red. I've been putting aloe on it, but my shoulders still hurt so bad. Anyone have a favorite way to soothe it and help it heal up quicker?? Oooh yeah, and I can't wait until it starts to peel... LOL

Has anyone tried honey for sunburns? I use it for other minor burns (stove, iron, etc.) with amazing results!

Plain old aloe vera gel is the best thing to soothe a sunburn.

Heather,

I believe it does partically. I know they both contain menthol. I think the shaving cream has something else. my Doc is very home based fixits. He says its the stuff they put in for razor burn work for sunburn.

Let me ask you this...Why don't they put razor burn "stuff" in girl shaving cream? Maybe it is technique. Are we better leg shavers then they are face shavers? Just one of my general questions to the universe.

I burn very easily and so does my daughter so needless to say we are not big on spending to much time in the mid-day sun. On the rare occasion that we have been burned I use an old remedy that my mom did when i was a kid. She would grind a bit of oatmeal into a powder and then mix it with some yogurt to form a paste. Then pat it on the burn and let it set for as long as you can but at least 20-30 minutes. It is very soothing. Then once you wash it off apply aloe vera. You can do this a few times a day.

On an off note here I will just say that several years ago a friend of mines baby had a terrible burn on her cheeks. Since she was still lactating her midwife told her to put a little breast milk on it. I was good the next day. The power of women never stops amazing me.

Have a good laugh at this one...

Medicated shaving cream, you know the foam stuff. Colgate still makes it. I put it on the burn, then sit in front of a fan on low until it dries.

My son gets one horrendous burn a year. We do this and he is sleeping on it that very night. Its still red but the pain is gone.

I'll have to get some apple cider vinegar, then... my shoulders feel like they've been sandpapered... I'll alternate between that and the aloe....

It's not so bad that I have to take painkillers, thank goodness!

I'll remember the advice, Nancy Jo. Aspirin, cool shower, moisturize, drink water and loose clothes. Because it will happen again. Always does-LOL!

Janice, I'm not sure about that pain....I've never used it in the bath, but when I have a bad sunburn I take a nice soft cloth, and pour a bowl filled with the cider vinegar, and dip it in, barely squeezing it dry and then sort of "sponge bathing" it on the parts that are burned...usually my shoulders (like Saturday) and the backs of my legs. Gosh, I'd hate to think that it caused that type of pain for you, but perhaps it was just the bad burn--I've had one so bad that my bones actually ached and I threw up and had to go to the e.r.

WELL to late now, but the first thing you do when you know you have had to much sun is take ASPIRN. It cuts the heat, just like a fever, and get in a cool shower, and then with what ever you choose, aloe is the best, moisturize moisturize, and lots of cool water to drink because you have really dried yourself out, loose clothes and then don't do that again. HA. Little Leary on the vinegar thing, I know that will take the sting out of a burn for a few minutes, but then it comes back. And Vinegar is a drying agent.

I remember my mother putting cider vinegar on my sunburns when I was little .It really helps. I tried to tan a little in the 70s when we lived in Arizona, and I got skin cancer on my face and my arm. Some of us are just supposed to be pale and pasty I guess.

Jonni - Do you apply the ACV directly on the burn? Or use it in a bath? I poured some in a bath about a month ago when I had a bad burn. And I felt great until I got out of the tub. I don't know what caused it, but suddenly, I had the most intense pain coupled with itching. I doubled over it was so bad. I called David and was nearly screaming in pain....the best way I can describe it is 'shingle pain'....it was late at night, so he asked a pharmacist in Walgreen's who recommended Benedryl instant, melt on your tongue strips. They worked! But I still can't figure out if the vinegar caused it or if it was just the burn going postal on its own.

This sounds gross, but apple cider vinegar always does the trick for me...takes the sting out. I also have some sort of "soother" that I bought from Crabtree & Evelyn and that works nicely, too..but in a pinch, Apple Cider vinegar.
