I discovered flax several years ago when I added it to a homemade smoothie for health reasons, it's nutty flavor is so good and good for you! Now I want to add flax to our daily menu and was wondering if anyone had any good recipes using flax? I added some to meatloaf last night that was wonderful, so now I want to add it to pancakes, breads, muffins, you name it! I would really like a good flax seed bread recipe plus any other ideas for using flax? Thanks to all!

Trader Joes sells a bottle of Organic Flax seed oil in their stores for about 7.99.I have no trouble having it go bad as long as I use it everyday and keep it in the fridge. We use 2 Tbsp. in our smoothies daily.It is better than the capsules as you would have to take ALOT of capsules!

I was only talking about the oil or ground flax seeds. if the seeds are whole than I would say they are safe in the freezer for a long time. When we grind ours for putting over oatmeal for breakfast we only grind enough to last about 2 weeks then we grind new. I've noticed the fresher the seed, the more you can feel the oil when you grind them. Also you can really tell by smelling them once they're ground or by tasting a little bit, they smell pretty bad, not rotten but the paint varnish. If the seed is left whole, nothing upsets the oil so it last a lot longer but like any seed or nut it will eventually go ransid. My grandmom has one of those pillows that you heat in the microwave and it's full of flax seeds ( which hold the heat) but I can't use it cause when you heat all you smell is varnish because I guess the seeds have gone bad, especially cause you heat them over and over. I guess flax is not a good filling for such a thing, now I know if I were to make one myself I'd use rice.

Yeah Bob's Red Mill! I use to live near the mill, and my mom use to go there all the time to get lfaur and such. this was long before they were in the grocery stores. My canning apron is made from a wheat germ sack form the mill.
I get my Flax from Azure Standard. It is a company that delivers organic and bulk foods. They are Oregon based and deliver in Or, WA. ID, MT, ND and MN, and CA. I order with a group of friends to save on the deliver fee. Here is their web site. www.azurestandard.com

My flax seed meal came from Safeway...Bob's Red Mill brand...he always seems to have great specialty flours and grains.

yes, that's what I was saying above.....
flax seeds are so full of oil that they go rancid easily.
That's why it is always a good idea to purchase whole, keep them refridgerated, and grind your own.Too bad they don't tell you that on the package!!
I can't believe they can still sell flax oil unfridgerated.

I don't really have any recipes for flax but I love it especially on salad. My whole body changes when I use it regularly.

I do have a warning though -- Do not cook flax oil, always keep it in the frig and do eat it if it's over 6 months old. I say this because flax oil oxidizes very easily. And when it oxidizes it becomes toxic. Flax oil becomes linseed oil which is what is used to make oil paint. I know this because thats what we make our oil paint with. You can tell the difference by the smell, it changes quite a bit once it oxidizes. Don't get me wrong I love flax, I try to get everyone I know to use it. Oh and reason why I say no cooking is because heat will begin to oxidize any oil.

Hi and welcome Kennie, what a neat name! No WinCo stores here in the Ozarks, but we do have a few health food stores so I'll look next time. I usually buy my flax seeds and meal by the pound so I can use it in due time. I wanting to find a good and tested whole wheat bread recipe using flax meal too, I can look it up on the web but would rather trust a tested recipe, you know. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Sue, I buy ground flax seed in bulk from WinCo, don't know if you have those stores back east, but I buy a couple of pounds and keep it in the freezer. My white bread recipe makes six loaves and I put about 1/4 cup in the batter when it is mixing. It tastes great, mellow and nutty. Got to be good for you.

Here is the recipe I invented yesterday for Banana bread:

I am calling it "Just the Flax, Ma'am" Banana Bread (thanks Junebug)

2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 cup mashed bananas
1/2 cup yogurt
1 tsp. vanilla


1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup nuts (optional)
1 1/2 cups ground flax seed meal


In a large bowl mix wet ingrediants. In a seperate bowl, combine dry ingrediants.Add dry ingrediants to wet slowly and mix well. Pour into a greased loaf pan. Bake at 350* for one hour.

It turned out great!! The flax seed meal can be substituted in any baking recipe for shortening, cooking oil, or butter at a ratio of 3 to 1. I used to use 1/2 cup butter in this recipe, but now use 1 1/2 cups flax seed meal. This eliminates saturated fat, trans fats, and adds tons of fiber!!

Thanks gals, I forgot to mention I do use flax meal more but when I do use the seeds, I grind them up in my coffee grinder, just what I can use at one time, but thanks Susan for the freezer tip, I was always told to store in the frig too. And I am taking the flax oil caps as well, I find they keep me regular and hey if they help with hot flashes, maybe I can get a running start on it? LOL Would LOVE some recipes, thanks a ton Diane! Many more thanks to all who posted here!

OOOO! Thanks Susan for the info on the storing of the seeds. Didn't know that freezing was best. I use the ground flax in breads and in my cereal. I also take flax oil in capsule form as it is "suppsose" to help with hot flashes, though I have not found a change, darn it.

You are correct in stating the best benefit comes when the flax is ground...otherwise, those slippery whole flax seeds slip right through the whole digestive system without ever being properly broken down and digested. Those slippery buggers!
Something else of note is the rapid oxidation rate of ground flax seeds. Because the seeds are so high in oil, it's best to grind just what you need for the day.
I went to a nutrition talk once where the nutritionist recommended that the whole seeds be stored in the freezer, and taken out from there to be ground. (They don't freeze or stick together)She also rec. that if you preferred to grind in advance, not to grind more than 3 days worth and even keep that in the freezer. The fridge didn't prevent oxidation well enough. She went on to describe the dangers of ingesting rancid oils
That's why it's also best to purchase the refridgerated flax seed oil with an expiration date on it.
I LOVE flax seeds and walnuts in my oatmeal...mmmm!

I have a couple good muffin recipes I will dig out tomorrow and post. Do you have a Trader Joes anywhere near you? they sell Organic Flaxseed Oil in their store, their brand, which is the most inexpensive I have found...it is good in smoothies, we do that every morning!

I checked a flax cookbook out from the library a couple of weeks ago. Apparently the maximum health benefits are from ground flax -- the author recommended using a Braun-type grinder, like a coffee grinder, and storing the ground flax in the frig. Then throw a tablespoon or more into just about anything. I put a Tbsp in my oatmeal every morning. Certainly it can be added with the flour in all those baked goods you named. Nutty and good!
