Hi all,

Today I was looking after my twin nephews who are 8 years old. One of them got the hiccups and of course the other one was giggling about it.

I used one of the two cures I have always used with kids. I took the hiccuppers hand in mine, looked it over carefully, then slowly traced around his palm and up and down each finger before pretending to pull something out of the middle of his palm and throw it away. Ta Da! No more hiccups. It works because the kid is so fascinated by what you are doing that he relaxes and his breathing regulates naturally.

My mother thought this was the weirdest thing she's seen me do yet so I'm not sure where I learned it.

The other thing I like to do is the encourage the kid to concentrate really hard on sending those hiccups to someone else. Again, their mind is off the hiccups and they stop.

Of course, I don't like to cure babies' hiccups unless they have been at it so long that they are getting weary and irritable. Hiccups help the lungs develop and grow. That's why puppies and kittens get hiccups too.

SO, how do the rest of you cure hiccups?

i call my mom and that does the trick. She has some magical hiccup-be-gone spirit. Honestly, it sometimes work when I simpy think of her. My sister is the same way.. all we do is call our mom and say something like, "mom.....pause....hiccup..." my mom is quiet and within a second or 2 the hiccups are gone. amazing and spooky!! ~julia

I do a lot of yoga, and know that hiccups are simply spasms of the diaphram. So, when I get hiccups (or even feel them coming on) I relax my abdominals, and take smooth, even, deep breaths, really focusing on relaxing the belly and diaphram, and they never last past one or two more. Hey, maybe it's a form of meditation!? But it works for me. And my shirt stays dry.

My youngest daughter(14) gets the hiccups often. She had them when I was pregnant with. I guess I am ornary as I usually try to startle her, seems to always work. When I get them I breathe really fast, and then hold my breath. I like the palm idea, that one will have to be used for future grandbabies, one mustn't startle sweet babes.

I usually hold my breath or drink a full cup of water slowly. I'll have to try raising my arms next time...

Oh, and my husband never has problems with hiccups. When he gets them, he hiccups once and it's over!

My mother always had me "drink from the wrong side of the glass" and I had forgotten that until I read all these posts. I had the impression that you put more pressure on your epiglotis and that is what made it work. Who knows what the real answer is?!?!!

All the answers made me smile.

Aunt Jenny and Lynn, it's not the concentration that makes it go away. I think when you drink upside down it makes you drink slower and as you are bending over it relaxes your stomach. I inherited my Grandparents hiccups. I get them all the time. I found the upside down drinking worked, but found an easier way. I get a big mouthful of water, then bend over and swallow a little at a time. It works just as good as holding the glass in front of me.

When I feel spring coming I have to plant or I’ll go crazy!

Drink water upside down. Bend over, and drink. It takes so much concentration that the hiccups go away.
I do know someone who did this so often that she got good at drinking upside down, and it no longer worked for her.

We've always used a good heaping spoon full of smooth peanut butter and it's worked every time as far as I remember!

Have to watch out with small children though, just incase of possible allergic reaction to nuts, yikes!

I like that palm treatment....no calories, no fright and down right nice! Thanks for sharing!

Along Bramble's line of thinking, if you have someone massage your upper/middle shoulder area in the middle, that relaxes those muscles even more and results in them stopping. I did this for a teenage girl at work one day, and they all thought I was full of voo-doo, cause it worked... but hey, whatever works is fine in my book!

If you stretch up to the ceiling you elongate the muscles that are contracting and causing hiccups. Within a minute or so as your esophogus and diaphragm get back to normal the hiccups are gone. I think all the "cures" ( including this one) just buy you a little distraction time until things get back in sync. Certainly alot of unique approaches out there!

My husband got them and we tried everything, from holding breath to drinking water to startling. Drinking something sour like lemon juice or cider vinegar works, too, but he was taking tums all day after that!

Of course you cannot do this with babies, but I would startle my daughter when she got old enough to understand.....I know, sounds cruel, huh? But really we would laugh about it. When she had hiccups, I would catch her in an unguarded moment and say "Boo!" or tickle her in the ribs from behind. The startle reflex would cause the hiccups to go away. She and I still laugh about this, and her hubby thinks I am mean to do it......but she does it to me, too.

I love the idea of stroking the palm of the hand. Much gentler and kinder than my way!!!! :)

we always drink a cup of water "backwards"....hold the cup in front of you and sort of bend over and drink from the side that isn't nearest you. I have done it since I was a kid and it works. My husband does the breath holding thing..dosn't always work.

I love those solutions! My solution has always been to take seven small sips of water. Perhaps this is a combination of the concentration involved taking seven . . . small. . . sips and of the swallowing action. But it works on me!

My Mom always got us a glass of water, put a clean wash cloth over the top, and made us drink the water thru the washcloth. Of course I did it with my own kids too cause it works every time. i don't know how or why put it does!
