A friend turned me on to this new tea. It comes in glass bottles in health food stores and you can also make it from scratch.

The claim is it supports digestion, metabolism, immune system appetite control weight control and a bunch of other things. It has enzymes and probiotics

It smells like apple cider vinegar and has fizz. If you drink it ice cold, it's actually pretty good. The bottle says it's cultured for 30 days but the homemade goes for just a week.

The recipe is: boil 1 gallon of water dissolve 1 1/2 cups sugar steep 2 tea bags cool the tea add 1/2 cup of old tea culture let it sit in a glass bowl for about a week

We are 1 day away from tasting. The kitchen smells like vinegar and the bowl has a weird funky slime woven in it. I'm a little skeptical.

The culture can be divided like friendship bread and passed to others to start.

Anybody else hear of this??

You can do a google search on Combucha Tea and several sites will give you the recipe.

The recipe we have includes the SCOBY that is passed along, so I'm at a loss too when starting completely new.

We are on our 4 th batch of this stuff

If it ferments correctly, its a mixture of sour and sweet at the same time and the fizz is nice too Kind of like drinking weak apple cider but not really

I was able to scrounge one of those big wide mouth jars.

Tried the sun tea jar from good 'ole Wally World, and the stupid thing leaks and its brand new!

Have to agree, the hommemade does taste better. I'd stay away from the flavored enhanced Combucha. Could be a conflict of flavors

I guess I will have to try making it. The bottled ones are very yucky to me. I keep trying but just can't drink them. I hope I have offended anyone. I really would like to drink it as I need what ever help I can get for my colitis as $400+ a month for medication is out of the question when my insurance changes in a couple of months.

Betty Jo- I never liked the ones that you buy in the store. Making your own at home tastes so much better, and different too! The ones at the store don't taste like Kombucha to me.

There must be something wrong with my taste buds. I bought 3 bottles of Synergy Kombucha about 6 weeks ago and still have one left. It looked so good and healthy but I can't drink it. Any suggestions? I forced myself to drink the first one which was cranberry I believe. The green one I opened last week and put into a smoothie hoping that would make it easier. Throw over half a bottle away. I have the Raspberry Rush left. The dates are good on the bottle. I feel like I am missing out on some thing that I should put into my body.

Eureka! We strained off the SCOBY and placed the other in the frige. It was way fizzy last night when we tasted. It has gone flatter today. I drank 2 glasses.

It's so good!

I'll try upping the sugar content. The jasmine might be masking any vinegar smell.

It's all good here, so I'm a believer!

And I switched over to a dish towel.

Thanks ladies!

oh and just to mention: old restaurant gallon jars are great for this...or sun tea jars that have the little spigot. the tea comes out best if you use a culture and some of the tea it brewed instead of just the brew. I find that if you also start out using 2 cups of sugar per gallon your tea brews better, and is easier to take as it isn't as vinegar-y. You know it's done by the carbonation and the taste. It should taste like apple cider but a little more tart.

I use organic black tea and organic sugar and find there is a HUGE difference in how I feel as opposed to a friend of mine who makes it with regular refined sugar and lipton black tea.

I dont recommend cheese cloth because it is thinly woven and things can still get in it. Use a dish towel or tea towel instead. Makes it a lot harder for crud to infiltrate your yummy Kombucha. The SCOBY on top can still get moldy regardless, but your chances are less. In fact, it is the SCOBY that gets moldy and ruins the tea (just happened here despite doing everything right!) and can be fatal as the mold that occurs is the exact mold needed to make penicillin (good to know for when the world goes to pot...lol!) the entire batch then needs to be tossed-tea and all!

Found out you will need to cover the cultures all week w/ cheesecloth.

The lady who pased along the recipe forgot to add this. Keeps other molds and nasties from getting into the batch.

But I guess you use the tea at the bottom of the bowl. The stuff that forms on top is kind of like the sealant?

We use jasmine tea. Hubby gets it from the Asian market and brews it 10-12 cups at a time in the coffee maker. (He doesn't drink coffee anymore) The boy who recommended it said "Numba won tea in China" so I guess 4 billion Chinese can't be wrong!

I've not ventured into making my own, but I do drink GT's Synergy/Kombucha regularly - it's so yummy and I do think it really makes a difference for me - more energy, better digestion, etc.

Tasha-

Oh you are so sweet! Thank you so much. You are such a bright star for sharing the goodness of the Kombucha! I honestly believe, that in conjunction with a natural, organic lifestyle, Kombucha can really help with a lot of ailments that affect our society today. I have heard that it can help diabetes, and I know it helped my joints while I was drinking it. When I had my Kombucha I was working as a cleaning lady and my joints often ached from scrubbing on floors and showers all the time, but when I drank the Kombucha, my joints felt so much better, my depression lifted, and I had so much energy! :D

I LOVE Kombucha tea! I need to get a new SCOBY, though. I used to drink between 8-16 ounces when I had a producing SCOBY and felt amazing. It felt like it was helping to flush all the toxins out of my body as I was losing weight.

I used organic green tea for my base when I made it! Yum! I think it kind of tastes like sparkling apple cider!

A friend has brews it often (I havne't been able to pick up a scooby or culture just yet)and really feels it helps.

My experience is I like the taste but haven't drank it enough to know if there's really a difference.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!
