Do any of you gals have a simple natural cure or help for heart burn..or acid reflux I guess maybe it is. I feel like I have eaten alot more tums than I should this week! I just love things like tomatoes, oranges, grapefruit juice and like that and I know that fuels it, but...is there something I can do to settle it and still have those things? Are tums bad for ya?? I hate to take anything, but they do help some.

I have this problem also and years back I took a papaya enzyme supplement that really helped because it promotes digestion. I got it at Fred Meyer/Kroger. I have also heard that not enough acid can cause the same symptoms as too much. But I don't know if I could drink cider vinegar or not.

I'm still hot...it just comes in flashes.

Yikes..I will have to think about that. My mom had her gall bladder removed a few years back...she had all sorts of problems with that! (the gall bladder not the surgery)

The gall bladder can cause the stomach to produce awful acid reflux. The pain can be about the same, though sometimes more painful. If tums aren't working anymore, have your gall bladder checked out.

I went to the hopital today, thought I was passing a HUGE kidney stone, nope said the doctor, he thought I was trying to pass gall stones instead. Now, I get to eat a very bland diet for awhile.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Gosh..those sound like something I used to get for my angora rabbits to help them digest (or pass through) instead of get blocked by hair they groom from themselves..I will have to look for them..that makes sense to me. I should be going to the herb store...about 20 miles away..one day this week..there are a couple things I need. It is the closest thing to a health food store around. She carries as much as she can.

It's always a puzzle to figure these things out, isn't it? You might want to try adding in a dietary supplement of enzymes, available in tablets at the health food store. The active ingredient list in the brand I use (KAL Super Enzymes) is this: Betaine, Cayenne, Pepsin, Lactase, Beet, Chamomile leaf, Ginger root, Fennel seed, Fenugreek, Peppermint leaf, Pancreatin, Bromelain, Papain, Amylase, Cellulase, Diastase, Lipase, and Alpha-D-Galactosidase. Taken with meals it gets all of the stomach's digestive juices working together. Something to consider.

I remember trying the baking soda in water thing years ago and it made me instantly throw up!! I don't know what my problem with that is...but I havn't tried it again. the vinegar has helped alot..seems like it would make things worse being acid, but it helps. I have still been using tums but not as many. I think I am eating too many tomatoes ...but how can I resist fresh tomatoes and cottage cheese...my favorite foods in the world?
Orange juice is a bad one..gets me too...so I have been laying off it too.

I take medication for my heartburn. If I miss my meds in the morning, I can feel the burn by afternoon. I have a hiatal hernia. I have found that the less I eat and the more water I drink, the better. Also, when I tried an Atikins type diet with lots of protein and less carbs I had much fewer problems . . . go figure. I've given up on EVER drinking orange juice, it kills me no matter what. :-) One thing to be aware of is that chronic heartburn can be quite serious, constant irritation of the esophogus can lead to cancer.
In the "old" days when I was a kid, my dad taught me to drink a glass of water with about a teaspoon of baking soda and it always worked for those times when I woke up at night with heartburn. I think it is a hereditary problem . . . several members of my extended family have this problem and my grandpa died from stomach cancer, though I don't know if it was related to heartburn. It makes me think though.
I don't think Tums is bad for you, necessarily, it has calcium which is good . . . except when you take too much :-). . . just like just about everything else.

I drink alot of water...at least 12 glasses a day..just love it. I will have to try the vinegar. I got a good bottle of it at the herb shop not long ago..the type "with the mother" and will start trying that. Thanks for the suggestion!!!

Jenny,
I can only relate what my husband has gone thru...
I used to call him "Mr. Gaviscon" because he ate them ALL the time.
Then he was on a prescription for something until there was an insurance dispute and his Dr. left town.
I had been reading about water, and how drinking enough water can help with that problem.
He has made the effort to consistantly drink 8 to 10 glasses a day and it has helped so much.
He still gets it from time to time and we have tried another home remedy...
apple cider vinegar, this is when he has eaten, and starts to get heartburn.
A shot glass full of vinegar, will tell him immediately if he has too much acid (and take an gaviscon or something), he will feel better in about 10 minutes if he didn't have enough acid.
It's been an eye opener for us.
I tried the shot of vinegar, wow, I thought it was coming right back up, but in about 10 minutes I felt better, after a large meal.
