Is there anything you can do for them to rid yourself of them?? For a long time they were 'invisible' but now they are turning black (??) and very visible. I pluck and pluck and once in a while, one gets infected. I even took to shaving, like my hubby, (actually, the electric razor feels very good, like a massage) but my skin is delicate and dries out.

So other than plucking, what can I do? I have thought of electro-whatchamacallit but the proliferation of hairs would far outpace my visits to the doc. Is there a home electro-thingy??

Since I'm getting close to menopause, I even have a silly, very fine hair growing out of the side of my nose. I have to watch for it and then pluck cuz it looks like I have hair growing from my nose and, personally, that has always grossed me out when I've seen it on others.

Help?

Winona, I am a Master Cosmetologist. I am also 51 with the same problem you have. I have been waxing my lip, chin, and eyebrows for about 10 some odd yrs...it really helps and makes the hairs softer and less....You can go to a Sallys Beauty Supply and get a small wax pot and strips...just be careful and dont put the wax on to hot...this is more economical for you in the long run. I had someone to do this for me when I worked in a salon....I hate to say this but they burned me. So I do it myself. Then you can do it when you want to. You might have topluck a few inbetween waxing...but that isnt to bad...Make sure you let the haor grow about 1/4 in. you will get it all if you do so. If you have any questions just ask...
Good Luck

Laser treatments work best when there's high contrast -- like very dark hair against fair skin -- to give the laser something to focus on, or whatever. Whatever you do, don't shave. The regrowth will look awful. Something like Nads (there's a DIY recipe somewhere on our forum, I think) is probably the most cost-effective answer.

Yes, I pluck also. I keep tweezers in my purse and if I feel one, they come out. I can't stand them. I think mine multiply as I remove them.

Well, I drank spearmint tea until I started to turn green. I think it made the growth a little finer but didn't stop it completely. I have to admit I started with 2-3 cups per day but lately I am lucky if I remember to drink 1 a day.

Maybe you have to be younger to make this cure effective? I've been fighting this for over 20 years.

I had electrolysis (it didn't work, I think it made the problem worse) and laser (it worked a little, but the dr. got rid of the machine before I had enough treatments to stop the growth completely, after nearly $1000 in fees...)
and even hormone therapy (didn't like the side effects) So I guess I'll just live with it...sigh....

I'm trying to figure out how the hairs can tell the difference between being pulled out by tweezers or wax...... And I don't understand the connection between spearmint and chin hair, but spearmint tea is tasty so I'll give it a try. The worst part about my 60th birthday was finding two black hairs growing out of my chin. Now I wish it was only two....

OK #1 STOP plucking your chin hairs, it makes them grow back longer with deeper roots. Waxing is a better option, because it does grow back finer and softer. But the best choice is laser hair removal. You can get this done at any dermatologist office and I highly reccomend it. It costs about 100.00, and will not grow back for about 3 months, when it starts to grow back do it again. After about 3-4 treatments it kills the roots and they stop growing. I have been doing it for several years when unruly hairs start to pop out and I always have my underarms lasered every spring so that I dont have to shave for the summer. You will love it I promise. And it does not hurt nearly as much as electrolysis nor as expensive....Nurse Lorri

I am going to ask the dumb question. Are you drinking the spearmint tea or using it on your face?

OK, so I went back and checked out the link and see it is to drink (lol).

brightmeadow Posted - Feb 22 2008 : 2:59:19 PM
I've just started the spearmint tea this week. 4 days. So far the hairs are still there. But I've developed a cold sore (in the absence of a fever) and am wondering if the spearmint is maybe causing this... So now I'm adding a lysine tablet too...
Maybe all of us using spearmint tea should report our results after a month or two!

I have 2 that appear. I call them my old lady hairs. They are huge and black too.

I just pluck 'em, so they don't appear as often

I am with you ladies. I pluck daily and end up with my skin being broken out on top of the hairs. I wish I could afford the hair removal; maybe someday. I feel like I am growing a goatee. The more that I pluck the more that I get. I have tried the shaving and the hair dissolving stuff, but it just makes my skin worse! The joys of getting old!

When I was younger I thought I was the only one that had this and was embarrassed about it. I pluck my chin pretty much every day. I've tried the creams, bleaches, and the wax strips. I'd like to try the laser treatments too, if I can afford it. I'm going to try the spearmint tea as well.

I am so glad someone brought this up too! I cannot believe how the chin hair sprouts out! I pluck and pluck and I think the more I do it the more it grows in. I think I might inquire about those laser treatments. I would save my pennies and go for it if it keeps the hair away permenantly. Thanks for letting us know about it.

Or try spearmint tea twice a day?

I'm so glad someone brought this up. I'm fairly blonde, but the hairs are getting dark. I pluck but even plucking makes my skin break out. Shaving even worse. And often when I pluck they break off at skin level and look sorta like a big blackhead.

Vaniqa will slow the regrowth of hair that has been removed, but I don't think its permanent. I think there is an otc moisturizer (made by Jergens mabye?) That claims to do the same thing. I haven't tried any.

From what I've read, the lazer works best on dark hair on a fair skin for some reason. Its expensive, but if it only took like 2 visits at $150 a pop, I might do it. Even with the pile of medical bills I already have.

I have looked into the laser treatment and at the time it was $150 per treatment and it took at least 2. That was 3 years ago and it might be different today.

One thing is that any medications that you are taking that warms you to stay out of the sun, has to be discontinued for at least 2-3m weeks. I am on a couple that has that label and I cannot go without them for 2 weeks. If it were not for that, believe me, I would be "lasered"

Kathy-

When guys become women, they get laser treatments on their face that destroy the hair folicles. I watched a documentary on it.

Maybe us women should do the laser thing?

The misplaced hair thing has been the worst thing about getting older. It started with my pregnancies. and the unwanted hair just keeps spreading! I have also thought about electrolysis. I think a home kit would be worth it.Now they do laser treatments pretty cheaply, too. With the laser they can do the whole chin area and then from what I've been told no hair would dare grow there again.
knewslady Posted - Feb 15 2008 : 08:01:05 AM
I have often wondered why it was when the hair on my head started turning white the hair above my lip was turning black. I do the plucking thing and she was right about the waxing, the hair just has to get too long for it to work. I just don't think it is fair. Looks like there would be some kind of hormone you could take for it. If men wanting to become women can take some kind of a hormone to get rid of their manly hair surely there is something out there for us.
