Anyway, my 24 daughter is suffering with it terribly, just on her elbows. Any homeopathic remedies or medications any of you swear by? We need some Farm Girl wisdom and networking here... PLEASE!
She is an RN and it so worries me for her to have any open sore like this that could facilitate some ungodly germ attack upon her system.
Thanks Girls...:) |

Posted - Feb 24 2008 : 08:23:38 AM Several of my customers have told me that their excema went away entirely when they stopped using dryer sheets. Otherwise, the first thing we recommend is, as Dalyn said, removing all synthetic fragrances, degergents, colorants and preservatives from ANYTHING that goes on your skin. Soaps, lotions, laundry products, etc. Regular and liberal use of gentle, natural moisturizers such as pure unrefined shea butter, jojoba oil, olive oil, etc. - and for some, an exfoliating scrub of salt or sugar mixed with vegetable oil is very helpful. As this thread indicates, it seems like everyone finds their own individual "cures" eventually! I can tell you this for SURE - in the last 10 year I've been running my herb shop, the number of people coming in wtih skin problems like this has just accelerated every year... |

Posted - Feb 23 2008 : 8:16:29 PM I'm not sure about how to treat an accute attack, but chronic is half preventative. For some it's stress. RN is a stressful job! For some it's diet. Goat Milk Soap is supposed to help, and alot of people swear by it with regular use. I make it, but since I don't have that skin problem, I really can't say with any experience.
I wouldn't use any fragrances or store bought soap/shampoo, etc. Store bought is synthetics, chemicals, and detergetns. bad stuff.

Posted - Feb 14 2008 : 1:27:44 PM One other thing I remembered...my son used to get these really red itchy patches on all of his "bendy parts", elbows, knees, back of neck, etc. I couldn't figure it out...finally I realized it only happened after eating junk food, and I narrowed it down to artificial colors. Regular Dr's often do not make the connection between skin issues and food, but even so its VERY often the case that its food related. Good luck finding the real cause!

Posted - Feb 13 2008 : 12:23:54 PM Melanie, Thank you so much for sharing your experience! My youngest has psoriasis and I am so fed up with dermatologists and meds! I have been looking for a natropath, but no luck yet. We are looking into diets and the other things you mentioned. I am so happy to hear this worked for you, aside from having to do the dishes again.
I'd love to hear more about what works for everyone. Yeast was mentioned...I am SURE this is an issue for my son, but not one doctor has even menmtioned it! I found out through my own reseach online that it is a common problem with psoriasis (esp. the scalp). Has anyone tried an apple cider vinegar rinse for this, and did it give any relief?
I came across a couple of great books in my reseach. "Healing Psoriasis" and also "The Psoriasis Cure". Both talk about the internal causes of these type of problems, not just slathering ointments on the outside. I am determined to help my son get some relief.
My son is allergic to the calendula cream too. He has a number of food and other allergies. I'm curious, do you ladies have other allergies?
I REALLY appreciate hearing about your personal experiences. Thank for sharing ladies! Rhonda
I will sing at the top of my lungs, and I will dance even if I'm the only one...

Posted - Feb 13 2008 : 06:50:54 AM Oh gals I can totallly sympathize with you all. I used to have itsooooo bad on my hands that I couldn't bend my fingers, my dear husband would have to wsh my hair for me and do the dishes....hmmm that wasn't so baad after all!! anyway....Dr's had me on all kinds of steroid based things, but none of them seemed to work. I finally went to a natropath. He asked me to keep a food diary for one month. After reading my diary and noticing that I consume a lot of tomatoes, he told me that they were my problem. He also told me to take out all of the nightshade family of foods, potatoes, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and eggplant. So I did for one whole month, I did not let any of those foods touch my lips. Very hard indeed!! He also recomended omega 3-6-9 pill as they have a high dose of esential fatty acids. So for the low price of $6.99 a month, I am excema free!!! I still eat all of the veggies listed above, but sparingly and I try to rotate them a bit. One of you gals mentioned calendula cream. I tried that, but found out that I am allergic to it as I am allergic to marigolds and they are in the same family...go figure, I am allergic to a "healing" cream! Good luck gals:)

Posted - Feb 12 2008 : 4:17:35 PM I was reading that aged cheeses, vinegar, and smoked meats are other culprits. The only cheese recommended was mozzerella and cream cheese. So I have eliminated these culprits and got some probiotics today.

Posted - Feb 12 2008 : 3:48:38 PM For me it ended up being a wheat sensitivity, which had not shown up on the allergy test I had taken recently. As soon as I stopped eating so many grains in general, it cleared right up.

Posted - Feb 12 2008 : 1:54:44 PM FOr my daughter we had to take her off dairy, completely. No milk proteins of any sort, through food or topically. Milk protein in some shampoos and lotions caused breakouts, stomach upset, etc. Before we figured out it was dairy, she used a comfrey salve which worked really well for the itchiness and helped the areas heal faster.

Posted - Feb 12 2008 : 11:56:56 AM Topically, my pediatrician recommended Aquaphor for my girls, and it has worked for me. I was just reading on the internet that nutritionally, you can reduce high fat foods, increase Omega-3 fatty acids (tuna, salmon, flaxseed, walnuts or supplements), increase low-fat yogurt or a probiotics supplement, B vitamin complex, and Antioxidants C, E, Selenium, Magnesium and zinc. The evening primrose or borage oil supplement have Gamma-Linolenic Acid which has been shown helpful in eczema.

Posted - Feb 05 2008 : 6:41:47 PM I have psoriasis, and perhaps excema (is that spelled right) on my elbows and knees and scalp. Nothing helps like sunlight and salt water. A week at the beach can almost clear it all up. Sitting in the sun helps, no matter where I am. And a bath salts bath helps, too. Cortisone does improve it, but will not heal it.

Posted - Feb 05 2008 : 2:20:43 PM Doctors will prescribe steroid creams. I take evening primrose oil for mine and am careful about what kind of soaps and lotions I use. I try to use only natural based products. Stress makes mine worse so I try to stay relaxed, exercise helps with that. Also, ultra violet light or exposing the area to sunlight helps it to go away.
Blessings.... Sarah
