I am off to see the chiropractor tomorrow for the first time. I somehow hurt something in my back 4 months ago while cleaning out the chicken coop. Finally just plain sick and tired of it not improving no matter what I do or don't do. I am taking the plunge into the world of chiropractics.

Hope this works.. Have any of you girls tried it???

Hi girls, thanks for all your advice on the chiro thing. I had my 2nd visit today, due to weather, I had to change my tuesday appointment.
Looks like this is going to take sometime to correct itself, like 4 months, YIKES.. I need it all done with in time to garden, this may put a crimp in my plans. I had no idea something so simple, like cleaning a coop could turn out not in my favor, lol.. silly me, I should have listen to my hub and used a wagon to load it all in.
I did myself even more good yesterday and piled wood in the rack by the woodstove.. so now, I get to do some homemade traction, lol.. I am supposed to hang from a bar and let things reaggrange themselves. So, tonight my hub is going to hang a piece of pipe in the kitchen doorway.. NICE!!!!

Do ya ever feel like sometimes your, your own worst enemy???

Yes Yes Yes!!! I fell a few years ago in a ballet class--from an almost horizontal postion in the air, and landed on my side, seriously bruising my femur and the tissue. A few weeks later, while sitting at my desk, my bum and ahem, other girly parts would go numb, and a burning sensation would radiate into my lower back. It gradually got worse, and the whole right side of my body would go weak/numb and I would lose function. Initially, I went to my regular physician who said he thought I should get tested for MS. I was terrified--getting married in 2 months, looking forward to life and now MS? Well, my mom suggested I go to see the chiro like I had in the past, and they did a bone and body scan, and found that my whole pelvic carriage was tilted--it had been "jammed" sideways by the fall in class. 4 treatments and I was right as rain. I've never had any problems since!!!! MS? Ha!!

So yes, a good chiro can make all the difference.

Mary Ann, it feels a bit better after I use those stretching excersies she showed me. The hot water from the shower feels pretty good to. I do noticed that if if sit to long, it aches and I think it is the muscles tensingup, so I get up and walk. I'm trying to be cautious when I have to load the wood into the furnace.

Brenda, I was going to walk today but it temps here were so bad, it strung. I rode my stationary bike instead. I even hang my knitting bag from the handlebars, lol.

Tracey, you might have a lot of your mobility back in time for your coop cleaning. It's surprising how quickly it can work in some cases.

I have a friend that's a chiropractor. She says there are over 120 different ways to do an adjustment, and most practitioners use just a handful of them. (She says she uses about 20.) As Diane said, sometimes you have to change practitioners to find the combination that works best for you. So if this one doesn't work out, don't give up on chiropractic; find another practitioner.

Those machines are WONDERFUL! I had a procedure done like that for my neck, it it felt like all the hairs on my head were standing up!

I have seen similar machines in mail order catalogues, but I doubt the possess the same strength.

Also too Those sticky heated patches work wonders!

I wear these on the back of my neck, especially if I'm going somewhere and carrying a backpack.

I've been going to a chiropracter for 20 years - but not regularly, only when I have a problem. The first time I was putting a heavy pumpkin in my car's trunk and that lifting/reaching motion just made me pop something in my back, the mechanical adjustment the chiropractor did fixed me up in a week or two. He does not ask me to come back for a regular adjustment...I would tend to view a chiropractor who wants to fix something that's not broken with some suspicion, but maybe that's just me!

A couple pieces of advice he gave me then - walk as much as possible. (Of course maybe this advice was specific to me! Ask your own doctor!) When your back is hurting, don't sit, don't lie down, but walk. Walking warms up the muscles and allows them to stretch - just sitting lets them tense up, and when your spine is out of adjustment, it is the muscles tensing up and sometimes spasming that causes a lot of the pain. When your muscles stretch while you are walking sometimes your back will naturally ease back into position. I have found this to be good advice over the years and sometimes I can avoid a trip to his office just by following his advice given so many years ago.

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands - You shall be happy and it shall be well with you. -Psalm 128.2

Julie, ahe used some sort of handheld thing. It felt a lot like what you described. I want one, it felt soooooooooo good afterward. It just about makes you melt on the table, lol. I'll ask her next tuesday if she is a pro adjuster. I'm new to all of this but I like it!! I just have to get used to the idea that it is not a quick fix and it is going to take time to heal. This sure is putting a crimp in my to do list. But, as long as I can get out into the garden this spring, I'll be happy. I will just have to change how I clean out the chicken coop this spring.

Thanks for all of your kind thoughts girls.. I appreciate it!!

My chiro uses what he calls tens.(sp?) They are 4 patches that are hooked up to a machine and it is like a massaging type thing to get the muscles loosened in order to do the adjustment. I have had adjustments done without it but only when I'm in a hurry. It gives me time to relax too which makes the adjustment easier on me.

I couldn't do what I do without mine. I will say though, that it took about three different chiro's until I found one that actually worked for me.
I see the one I have now every two to three weeks. She's been a godsend.

Tracey,
I know when I have something major happen my Chiropractor will have me come once a week until it can be lessened. Also she probably used a laser to help with the stiffness. It looks like a flashlight type thing. Works great!
Like Mary Ann's he keeps me moving and able to do the things I enjoy. (And Some things I don't....lol)

Rob on the other hand, does not like going to the chiro so he doesn't. He feels worse afterward. It's different for every person and if you are dealing with a chiro that shouldn't be practicing, it can be all the difference in your opinion I think.

Our Chiro is pro homebirth too! 5 of his six kids were born at home and he is more than happy to let me post things on his bulletin board about homebirth for my trust birth, doula and midwifery! YAY!

Tasha, that would be a PLUS if it helps with migraines. I'll get into that next week with her. I get those and also TMJ does it for me as well.

I also have a chiropractor in once a month to adjust my horses. He's a veterinarian who is certified for animal chiropractic. He makes a huge difference in how my horses perform. In addition to horses, he also does a lot of agility dogs.

I'm looking forward to next tuesday and seeing how she thinks it's coming along.

Julie, I am not sure. What is the difference? I've never heard of a pro-adjuster.

I went to one out of desperation a few years ago after falling forward down stairs and onto my neck.

The initial adjustment was doog and did the job, but I made the mostakemof confusing migraines caused by this and not caused by the heavy stuff being lifted at work. Two years later I decided to swich and see a licensed massuse (she is also an RN, so that was a plus.)

I'm fine now but have to pop Alieve after an expecially hard days work.

So the short answer is research the person in your community and ask questions. I'd rather a chiro and success and not have to face possible back surgery.

My neck had to be cracked. It was scary at first, but the relief was worth the initial shock of hearing a loud crunch from inside my own head.

And, hubby had syatic (sp) nerve problems from a fall in the creek many years ago. His pain was definitely taken care of. These days he'll go in for an adjustment if something feels like its getting tight.

Thanks Julie and Denise.. I'm glad I went. She was able to spot the problem the minute she started to examine my back. I'll have to go every week til it corrects itself and I am doing some added stretching exercises she added. She used this handheld thingamajig, kind of like a really deep massage.. WOW, that felt GREAT!!!!!! I would love to have that, lol. I had a really tight muscle and it felt sooooooooooooo good. Can't wait til next Tuesday.
I just want to be able to get out into my garden and get down to business in the spring with out this back crap to have to deal with, lol.

I go to my chiropractor once a week, mostly once every two weeks. I have been going to him for 16 years. He keeps me able to have a better range of movement then I would without it. I also go because keeping your spine aligned helps keep your immune system up. Less sickness. I have sinusitis, a problem throughout our family and Chiropractic really helps when I have trouble with vertigo.

I go to a proadjuster Chiro. They DO NOT bend and crack you. It is amazing. I would NEVER go to one that bends and cracks. My dad was SERIOUSLY injured by one and had to have multiple surgeries to repair the problem. I'm not trying to scare you that is just my experience. Lots of people love traditional chiros but I think if you can find one that uses ProAdjyster you would love it.
