Ok..I know I am still young but after a lot of visiting with docs, it's official- I am hitting peri-menopause and hitting it hard. So I am deciding to take control now instead of waiting for more problems to surface.

What is your best advice? Tips? Ideas? What makes for healthy aging? I don't want to look like I am 16 again, but want to age in a healthy way, taking menopause in stride. After talking with many friends, the key seems to be the younger you start taking care of yourself, the better off you will be during menopause. My mom hit menopause in here mid 40's, so this will all be preventative and also, transitional.

Thanks.
Cheers,
Heather

There's a book by Dr. John Lee called "What your doctor may not tell you about Pre-Menopause" which is very good! Progesterone cream, exercise, diet, all those things that aren't so easy! See if your library can get it for you or order from his website/amazon. (http://www.johnleemd.com) Be aware too ladies that the FDA is getting stupid (er?) about this area and have said that bioidentical hormones aren't safe - Wyeth is not happy basically. Suzanne Somers has some great tips too in her book "The Sexy Years".

Heather, I am 35 and hit the peri-menapause stage two years ago also. The symtoms probably started cropping up even earlier, but the sudden death of my nephew caused such stress that I thought I was going nuts!! I agree with these women...excercise...when I do it, the hormones behave; if I slack off, I pay!

Good point about the whole foods! Essential to feeling good inside and out!

I think the exercise advice is the best. I exercise almost daily, walk daily when weather permits, drink 8 glasses of water and take Omega 3 and Black Cohosh. I'm 47.5 now and just started menopause. I had a baby when I was 43, so I think I put things on hold for a bit! Relax & enjoy life too! Taking care of yourself will not only make you feel good about yourself, but others will benefit from the happier you too!

I agree with the exercise advice. It is crucial. Also, add lots more whole foods to your diet if you haven't already. I am in menopause (for 9 years now-I'm 49)and this has been the biggest help to me. I have no hot flashes at all anymore, and I do not take HRT or use any creams, etc.

Exercise, exercise, exercise! It turns back the hands of time even when your own hands are showing age spots (not that I'd know- wink wink). I used a yam cream that my herbalist gave me and it helped significantly with symptoms.

Exercise...especially weight-bearing/resistance, cardio as we lose muscle; easily replaced by fat and harder to lose as our hormanal levels change...work on eating nutritional foods as habits established while we're younger stay with us & it's more difficult to undo later, look into a topical progesterone (talk to gyn)...I used 2% formulation compounded by a pharmacy durig peri-meno, but now use 4%, but I know there are other products...Bellatude comes to mind but is very expensive for the amount required to be affective...
most important...enjoy life!
