My doctor found that I have injury to my rotator cuffs (shoulder sockets) from the car accident I was in a bunch of years ago. I'm trying to do light exercise and hoping to avoid surgery. Just curious if anyone else here had been through this or has it. It hurts a bunch and I am looking for tips on dealing with it since the pain meds make me loopy and I only want to take them at night.Has anyone tried acupuncture? I'm brave and cheerfully will try anything once

I have had two surgeries for thoracic outlet syndrome, by the world expert on the condition at UCLA. It's so close in area and symptoms of rotator cuff injury. At the time, when it was finally diagnosed (by a workers comp dr who had gone to UCLA and been taught by this surgeon) I was told it was often mistaken for rotator cuff problems. End result was limited range of motion and feeling in the arm/hand/fingers, reduced lifting capability and a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia. RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company wasn't happy about the 7 1/2 yrs of disability payments or medical costs, but neither am I happy with the limitations it's placed on my life. From carrying an armload of full plates in a restaurant to a 5# lifting limit is a big difference.
Regardless of the actual diagnosis, I do feel for anyone going through this problem injury.

I don't have rotator cuff problems, but thoracic outlet syndrome, where my arm falls asleep for days to weeks on end. the exercises and PT involved is extrememly similar to those suffering from rotator cuff. I would get this fixed now before you injure it again. I worked in a hospital, and people would put off their knee, shoulder, hip, surgeries until they were in pain, and then the healing process was more difficult because their bodies were weakened..Hope everything gets beter for you soon!

I have an old rotator cuff injury that still is painful daily! the only thing that seems to help me is acupuncture. It interupts the nerve transmission so there is no pain for awhile. Most insurance pays for it too. I do alot of yoga a teach dance classes on the side and as long as I keep my excerise regular it doesnt get worse (but still painful)

Annika, I had rotator cuff damage on my right shoulder about 8 years ago. I did it taking Stephany down a water slide. We fell backwards and my arm got caught behind me.

I did all the exercises, therapy, etc and nothing helped. I finally got two cortizone injections and have had no problems since. I do notice that if I vacuum it seems to make it sore but that's all.

I'm doing range of motion exercises right now, but we are talking about PT if this doesn't work, and eventually surgery if all else fails. I trust my doctor and all, I just wanted more info from people that might have had personal experience. Thank you both. I'm going to see if I can do the pt and get some of the pain knocked back. It's annoying, limiting and painful (grrrr) and since I'm going to be a great auntie in the spring, I want to be able to at least hug my great niece/nephy. As well as garden, and generally skip and play my way through life. So aim for physical therapy.
I'll start bugging the doctor Monday

My dad had a rotator cuff problem diagnosed several years ago. He lost quite a bit of the range of motion in that arm. They mentioned surgery but he wanted nothing to do with that and just lived with it. When he had his accident last summer and was recuperating, they found that his rotator cuff problem had been aggravated and sent him to a physical therapist. His shoulder is much better now than it was when it was first diagnosed. Did your doctor say anything about physical therapy? I can't understand why the first doctor didn't refer my dad to one years ago. Sometimes doctors are just kind of clueless.

Annika-

I have a good friend who has a rotator cuff injury. Her research and her doctors both agree that the injury will not heal on it's own. Instead scar tissue will build up and help make it feel a little better but not quite ever pain free, also it will reduce your range of motion on that shoulder. What does your doctor suggest?
