Have you heard of Chec? It's the Children's Health Environmental Coalition. They have a neat website that helps you identify hazards within your home & find safer alternatives.

For personalized help identifying and eliminating household risks in your home, take the 20-minute "Health-e-Home" Quiz. Upon completion, you'll get a personalized assessment that will tell you what you're doing right and what more you can do to create a healthier home for your family.

http://www.checnet.org/healtheHouse/myehome/index.asp

Come back after the quiz & share how you fared. I'm off to take it now...

We were low, except that since our house was built before 1970 (like 1935), it may contain lead paint. We also scored poorly because we don't have exhaust fan in the kitchen or bath... OH well. Interesting survey!

We were low on most things except the air quality in our home because we don't have an exhaust fan above the range. It stopped working and we'll get it replaced, but it's like, the low man on the totem pole

Mine was very good, though being new to wood heat, I am nervous about it yet. Hubby is not always good about making sure that smoke does not enter the house through the woodstove (if things are allowed to move down to a smouldering level, some smoke does escape when you open the door to the stove to poke it or add more wood.) If the fire is still going strong, we don't have this problem. Yep, the flue is open all the way. If I can smell smoke in the home, I turn on the A/C and fans or even open a window because I'm paranoid about it.

This is what I got:

Your family's risks from cleaners is medium. Extra-strength cleaners and cleaners with fragrances aren't necessary to keep your home clean and safe. You can do just as well with general purpose cleaners.

*** I guess my hubby is right here. He complains when I get the smelly cleaners as he calls them. ***

Your family's pesticide exposure risks are low. In general, the limited use of pesticides in and around your home will keep your family safer. Note, though, that children may be exposed to pesticides at school.

Your family's food risks are generally low.

The risks to your home's water quality are generally low. Test your water yearly to ensure that your water remains safe.

The risks to your home's air quality are generally low. Be mindful that ventilation is important when using chemical products and gas appliances in your home.

Your family's general household risk is low. Your home, its location and decor do not pose a significant risk to your family, or you have made an attempt to reduce existing or potential risks.

Mine were pretty low! Yay! Not that I was surprised at it, but is it nice to know all the hard work and changes are paying off!

Eww. Bad news, but unfortunately, I'm not surprised. Better get to work on those resolutions!

Ok, here's the lowdown on my home according to Chec:

The risks to your home's air quality are high. This means that you should definitely take steps to prevent indoor air pollutants from building up inside your home. That means improving ventilation, testing for radon, and reducing use of chemical products in the home.

We rely on wood heat (indoor woodstove) almost exclusively through the winter, and we don't check for nasty gases - I think we'll start doing that.

The risks to your home's water quality are generally low. Test your water yearly to ensure that your water remains safe.

We drink bottled water (glass bottles) & shower etc in spring water.

Your family's food risks are generally low.

Yea!

Your family's pesticide exposure risks are low. In general, the limited use of pesticides in and around your home will keep your family safer. Note, though, that children may be exposed to pesticides at school.

Double Yea! Except for the school pesticides - I worry about that. Have considered asking the school when they spray & keeping the kids home at those times.

Your family's general household risk is low. Your home, its location and decor do not pose a significant risk to your family, or you have made an attempt to reduce existing or potential risks.

Triple Yea!
